I don't know if the Braves are still after 6'3" guard Jarod Oldham of Decatur Eisenhower.. but I had a chance to see him play today in the Collinsville Holiday Tournament against a very average Belleville East team.

Jarod scored 10 of his teams 15 points in the first quarter on a couple of threes.. a drive to the basket.. and a drive where he pulled up and scored from about 10 feet out. He had several other good opportunities.. including a drive & reverse that rimmed out. He picked up his second foul at the start of the 2nd quarter and sat the rest of the half. He scored 9 in the second half including 2 off a spectacular spinning drive in the paint. His team won 67-61 and plays again Monday.

I'm no expert.. but I came away with the following impressions. He has a quick release after catching a pass. Not only can he shoot from the outside.. but he is probably better at driving to the basket-very creative with good vision and is capable of some big time passes. Oldham is pretty active on defense with quick hands-he was always poking at the ball and made a couple of steals. He is also not afraid to go inside and play with the big boys. I believe he was 3-4 from the line.. so he shoots his FT's pretty well.

On the downside, he disappeared at times during the game. Several times he picked up his dribble and held the ball with no pass or shot. Also in build.. he looks like a shorter version of J-J Anderson.. pretty skinny. I thought he also through up a couple of ill advised 3's.. including one from a good 7-10 feet beyond the arc.

I talked to several of his team's parents after the game. They felt he needed more intensity and attitude. I asked why he brought the ball up court when there are two other guards starting and wondered if he might benefit from having someone else do that.. a couple of fathers agreed.

Decatur Eisenhower had a couple of other interesting players.. 6'9" Brock VonNordeck and 5'11" Drew Washington. Washington scored 22 to lead the team. He with 4 threes.. drove with authority.. and was aggressive on defense. Washington is also very muscled. One parent told me he is very hot/cold as a player. I could not find anything about anyone recruting him. I was sitting with one of the moderators of the Saluki fan site.. and he commented this was their kind of player.

The parents said if VonNordeck ever gets his act together.. he would be the best player on the floor. He scored 16, had several blocks and quite a few rebounds. He shoots pretty well from 10 feet out. But the parents said he often just stands around watching. I understand he has gotten some interest from schools.. like SIU-E.

I'm not sure if I'll get a chance.. but I will try to go to Monday's game and post an update. Sadly I did not get to see the game with Glen Rice's kids. There are here from Georgia.

I watched Decatur E.'s second game in the Collinsville Tourney.. what a waste of $5. They played the Lincoln Railsplitters.. who were on fire. They nailed 10 threes in the first half & were up by 20 about midway through the 2nd quarter. That's when 6'9" Brock VonNordeck got into it with his coach.. yelling back and forth on the sideline. The kid was sent to the locker room.. he returned to the bench but did not play again. (see previous post about this kid being a possible headcase)

Lincoln needed only 4 three's in the 2nd half to set a new tourney record.. but only shot 2 and still won by 25.

As far as Oldham.. he finished with 6 points. He sat most of the 4th quarter when the coach put in the 2nd string. It was interesting.. Lincoln ran a 1-2-2 3/4 court press. Oldham and one other guard brought the ball up and I only recall one turnover. But once in the half court set Decatur could do nothing right.

At the start of the 3rd, Oldham tried to take over the game.. driving several times one against 5. Even though he got through the ball would not fall. But other than seeing him handle the ball well.. not much to report on him as a player.

Lincoln was a very well coached and disciplined club.. with at least 3 guys capable of hitting 3's. I saw them beat a very athletic Riverview Gardens (STL) team in their first game.. and beat Decatur E. I imagine they play everyone tough dispite a lack of size (tallest player 6'5").

I'm not sure how solid this is, but I have been told BU has now offically offered a scholarship to Oldham.

Can Jarod shoot?

Hope so... I was looking at the scholarship grid and a player like Oldham would be a nice fit.

New report on Jarod Oldham of Decatur Eisenhower HS from ChicagoHoops.com.
This report does not mention that Bradley has offered. It says the Eastern Illinois and SMU have offered.

I am told Oldham is cut his choices down to three: Bradley, Illinois St and Indiana St.

How on earth can ISU continue offering kids when they are already out of scholarships?!?

I guess by comparison, Oldham is very similar to DSE.

Looks like Oldham is still on the board, I wonder if the Braves are still in the picture?

I'm hoping with some available scolly's we can get a diamond in the rough later in the year. I am thinking someone like Aba Koita. Or if someone wants to transfer mid year and be eligible middle of next year. I am thinking of a Matt Roth. I am not as sure that he would succeed as I was out of high school. It would be fun to see him drill some long three pointers though. I watched some of the Indiana game and he hardly played. He did have a facemask on so that may be a factor.

Anyway I think Oldham could fit in the diamond in the rough category. I would like to see us get a 6-6 to 6-8 player that could be mobile enough to swing between the 2 and three position also. If Wilkins comes, that would be a 6-9 guy who can swing between 2 and three. Then a 6-3 guard would make us a huge team at certain times.

Better him than me...

Buffalo is not the greatest place to be...

I think maybe it rivals Cleveland...
