Dave Reynolds has an article in the Peoria Journal Star today (7/15) about Shang Ping, the Chinese kid playing this season on the ICC basketball team. It's a good report with new info on how the kid ended up in Peoria and on ICC. It sounds like Bradley is very interested, though now he is being tracked by a lot of bigs.
click here>>> Shang high on their list (http://pjstar.com/stories/071505/ICC_B703BBEU.071.shtml)
I am interested in why Dave does not refer to him as Eric Shang Ping? The previous Peoria Journal Star mention of him was back in May when they listed ICC recruits and he was referred to as Eric Shang Ping. Other reports have always used the first name Eric, also. Also, who is responsible for the pun in the headline? Whoever it is should be ashamed.

Dave also has a report on this year's River City Hoops Festival at Central high school this weekend.

The "Eric" might have been a nickname, since he's from China, and I suspect his parents wouldn't have picked an American first-name.
Dave mentions a kid that Bradley has been hotly recruiting--
"Chicago Phillips senior-to-be Osiris Eldridge was an all-star selection at the adidas Superstar Camp at Suwanee, Ga., last week. The 6-3 Eldridge has been hotly pursued by Bradley...."

I'm not sure the pun was intended. If you had not mentioned it, I would not have got it. Or maybe that just says something about me.
Anyway, nice article about the young man. As I stated previously, BU should go after this kid.

Usually the writer doesn't do the headline, so don't blame the writer. Also- it seemed like a mini-shot at BU, like they dropped the ball on him.
We will see how things pan out. He is already 20, so he would be a mature junior at a D-I school in 2 years if he stays at ICC.

Just looked at the paper. The print version is much more obvious.

According to a source of mine (who's never been wrong yet, and given me insight on Ray Brown's signing, Al's departure, CB's hiring, etc), BU has dropped the ball with this kid. I guess they had the inside track, but since he didn't play too much in the prep school tournament, they essentially turned their back. Not entirely their fault, but nonetheless. Now it may be too late to get back in the running, as the big schools are all calling. Let's hope JL & Co. can take advantage of their close proximity and get back in the running for this guy. He sounds like a good one.

Again, kudos to Dave Reynolds for some nice reporting. This is the kind of stuff many of us would have no way of knowing if the news reporter didn't get the story and do the interview. This is the exact stuff I like and hope Dave keeps it coming in future articles.
I culled a few other comments that had been posted about Shang Ping, and reposted them here.
**************************
I got there early enough to watch the game at 8PM with ICC vs. some good high schoolers and college kids from Morton, Farmington, etc.
It was close much of the way, but the ICC kids played very well and won. ICC's weak suit seems to be outside shooting, but they are strong inside with Shang-Ping, Eeten, & Nicholson.
Terrence Smith from Central is a very athletic wing, and Wires & Dillard are fine PG's, but nobody to hit from outside.
Dave Reynolds was there from about 8PM on to interview several of the ICC guys and some of the BU guys later.
Look for a writeup about Eric Shang Ping by Reynolds, as he spent a lot of time talking with him and then followed up talking to Tony Wysinger about Shang Ping and other things.

If any of you have been down to the RiverPlex to watch some of the games in the Hersey Hawkins Summer League, then you have probably seen the ICC kid named Eric Shang Ping. There have also been some reports about him here on the BradleyFans.com board.
Eric played this past weekend in Indianapolis at the Juco/prep Challenge, and apparently really impressed people.
There is a writeup on the premium part of Chicagohoops.com.
It's titled:
"6-10 Shang Ping Makes A Very Nice Showing At JC/Prep All-America Challenge In Indianapolis"
Zane Beekman, Nathan Koster, & Rodney Edgerson all participated in this event two years ago and all are playing D-I now.
Last year Raun Singleton, Brandon Pruitt, and Kevin Riley
from ICC participated.
Yes you did, Mike, and I think we had a talk about the kid's D-I potential. He is very mobile around the basket, can use both hands, but is also able to pop out and shoot a jump shot from 15 feet using his left hand. Coach Tony Wysinger made mention of the kid's D-I potential as far back as the intitial press release about him:

Last year Raun Singleton ....
Raun Singleton who was one of the top scorers for last year's ICC team did end up at 4-year Monmouth College.
He scored 5 pts in their first game against Central the Missouri State Mules (Mike Suggs' school last year)
Monmouth lost 90-61, as other local PJStar area players Blaise Rogers (8 pts), and Tucker Blaser (7 pts) also contributed

Shang Ping finally had a very good game Saturday as ICC won 64-59 over St. Louis Meramac. Shang Ping had 21 points.

ICC finally gets to play at home, going the whole month of November playing on the road and going 3-4.
They host Kouri's Pepsi Challenge, Dec. 2-3 which will include ICC, Kirkwood (who ICC has already lost to 60-39), Lakeland, IVCC, and Spoon River.
There will be some familiar faces, as
Spoon River has Matt Koster of Lewistown, Wesley Ware of Bloomington HS, and Tyler Schrick of Illini Central.
Lakeland has Erik Young from Lincoln
IVCC has Mike Tyus of Kewanee

I was just wondering
What ever happened to Eric Shang Ping
There was so much talk last summer and fall, now there is none?
Is anyone still recruting him?

I have to admit, I am puzzled also.
I really can't find Shang Ping listed in the databases of Jucojunction or Rivals. Scout does have Ping listed but only as a ONE STAR, and almost no mention of anything about him since last summer. I think Ping was way overhyped a year ago, and against less than top competition, he just didn't impress as much as some of the scouts thought he would.
There is no internet site in the universe that has better coverage and info on Ping than this site, BradleyFans.com. In fact, the reports here in June of 2005 were the only reports on him anywhere for nearly a month.
Just review what was said, and how he ended up performing.

He is said to be getting recruiting interest from Wisconsin, Illinois, and DePaul.
A report from last summer said Ping had supposedly already gotten a "scholarship offer" from Wisconsin.
I personally doubt that as the kid had never played even one high school, or junior college game at that point.
Here are the stats for Ping:
Games-30
FG- 156
FGA- 286
FG%- .545
3ptFG- 12

FTA- 189
FT%- .434

thank chj
but a lot will depend on how Ping does this summer and next fall.
He was classified as only a freshman, but next year as a soph playing in Division II junior college, he is going to have to be dominant if he expects to get those offers.
14 points, 4.5 rebs, and terrible shooting from 3-pt and FT just isn't going to impress the scouts.
By the way, I am anxious to catch some of the play down at the RiverPlex this summer and see which of the incoming BU kids comes to play, and we should be able to see Ping playing as well.

A report from last summer said Ping had supposedly already gotten a "scholarship offer" from Wisconsin.
A story in the Madison, WI Capital Times states that Wisconsin has NOT offered a scholarship to Shang Ping.
It says that Wisconsin is "tracking" Ping and that's all.

An event that might impact on the future of Shang Ping just occurred yesterday.
Ping was frequently listed as one of the two ro three targets that Wisconsin was watching to sign a power forward prospect for 2007-2008.
Yesterday, they signed Keaton Nankivil
a highly rated power forward out of Madison.
They appear now to be pretty well set at this position, and I wonder if they perhaps no longer have interest in Shang Ping.

By the way, ther Badgers also started practice earlier this month in preparation for a 10-day preseason trip to Italy.
They are already in Rome preparing for the games
They will play five games:

I don't know if Bradley is recruiting him. The recruiting sites list Illinois, Wisconsin, and DePaul. But I doubt Wisconsin and Illinois will offer.
I would like to see him at Bradley.

Ping is good enough to play somewhere at D-I, and his size
(at least 6-7, maybe 6-8, but doubt 6-9, as I have seen him and I don't think he is really any taller than Nicholson) will get him some offers.
A lot depends on his play this year, and he has to graduate from ICC as that's the only way he'd be eligible at D-I.
