Alaska seems a little strange. Good to hear that BU has some size coming in. I wonder how the Bradley staff found out about this recruit.

I can't say this kid excites me too much. He's not on Rivals or Scout. The last Alaskan we had got homesick after a year and left. I am sure he's a skilled player, but he's not the impact player I think we need. He may end up being one, but I don't think he will be immediately. We have 2 other scholarships, lets get some impact guys now.

He's listed at 6'7" 194...not exactly a 'big' in my world. He's basically the same size as Ray Brown and Gavin Schaier. I'm not saying it's a bad recruit, I just think we need 'bigger' (literally) impact guys to truly make this a special class.

The last Alaskan BB is referring to was Cameron Rigby who was a freshman on the 1996-97 team. He left after 1 season at Bradley.
Althought Rigby did play his junior and senior years at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska, he was actually from Melbourne, Australia. Because there was no high school basketball in Australia, he moved to Alaska to try to earn a Division I scholarship. I think the fact that he was from Australia played a part in Rigby's transfer to the University of San Diego.
Here is more on Will Egolf--
His high school team, Juneau Douglas, finished 4th in the Alaskan Class 4A state playoffs last March (the largest class). Will Egolf scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds in the final game. He was named to the All Tournament team.

"There are a lot of similarities with Bradley's style and the way our high school plays. I like how they use their four man (power forward).
Bradley coaches first spotted Egolf this summer at AAU tournaments in Las Vegas and Los Angeles...."
Then there are several more paragraphs of how Jim Les had a connection with the kid since the kid's personal coach was an ex-NBA guy (Mark McNamara) that Jim was friends with. It also talks about the kid's parents, family, high school, and his recruitment.
Not sure why the online PJS story left so much out.

It mentions that he needs to hit the weights. The pictures that Da Coach (thanks) posted show this.

It says that BU only has one ride left for this class? I thought with XC leaving we would have two left after this kid? If we only have one left we had better get a true big with the last ride.

BU has 2 rides left with XC's departure. IMO they wouldn't be offering a kid like this who still needs to develop if they only had 1 remaining scholarship.

BU needs to get a juco kid with the scholarship left behind by Xavier Crawford.
Frankly there just wouldn't be any high school 2006 players remaining who could help but if a juco kid out there still wants to come and play at BU it would be a perfect fit for the scholarship, in hopes that in another two years, XC will finish at Yuba and return to BU.

Ok, if we land a JUCO, doesn't that leave one more ride? Before XC's departure, there were 2 available. XC leaves, that makes 3. Egolf takes one, leaving 2 more. Reynolds says we only have 1 more left for next year. Are we still trying to get an impact big for this year, ala UNC-Charlotte a few days ago? Are we giving it to Lavin or Phillips (HUGE mistake)? Something isn't adding up here.

"There are a lot of similarities with Bradley's style and the way our high school plays. I like how they use their four man (power forward).
Bradley coaches first spotted Egolf this summer at AAU tournaments in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
A strong link was Egolf's personal coach, Mark McNamara, a former center at the University of California and for eight seasons in the NBA where he and Les were acquaintances.
"I consider Jim one of my NBA friends," McNamara said. "He's a smart coach, exactly the kind of guy Will needs. Will told me he felt really comfortable during his visit to Bradley, that there wasn't anything about he didn't like. We originally wanted him to take more visits. But he's sold and that's what matters.
Egolf's parents own a nature tour business in Haines, Alaska, a 90 mile trip by ferry or air from Juneau.
Following his freshman year at Haines High School, Egolf decided he wanted to play at a larger high school to get noticed. So his mother and he moved to Juneau.
During Egolf's sophomore year, his team traveled to St. Mary's for a team camp.
"I really liked it there and made it my goal to go to college there," he said. "But I ended up getting a little further. I'm happy with my decision."
McNamara said Egolf, who is expected to be an academic qualifier and may pursue sports medicine at BU, has made great strides this summer.
"He has the ability to play inside and out," McNamara said. "He can catch it and run well and he finishes really well. He also has some good post moves. He could use some more strength and that's why Bradley, which has a solid weight-training program, would be good for Will."

Alaska has produced 5 DI players since 2002, the most recent being 5 star recruit (and the focus of some contreversy) Mario Chalmers of Kansas. Mark down Egolf as #6. Looks like he should be the top player in Alaska this year.

Here are the names I can come up with from Alaska:
Mario Chalmers, Kansas, 2005
Chris Devine, UCSB, 2003
Ray Schaefer, Oregon, 2003
Doron Perkins, UC-Santa Clara, 2003
Marcus Watts, McNeese State, 2002
There could have been others, maybe some walk-ons or little recruited players.
Carlos Boozer, Duke led Egolf's school, Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears, to back-to-back state titles in 1998,1999.
Duke had Trajan Langdon in the 90's
Can you tell me who the other four of your 5 since 2002 are, BB?

Nice for him to play back in his home state and nice chance for Bradley to bang with some 'Bigs'.

It is way to early to tell how good this recruit will be but I like the idea of having a 6'9" player who can play inside and out and can finish. I like the idea that it sounds like the Sweet 16 run has helped by getting BU's name in front of more recruits. I like the list of schools who were after him. If Wisconsin was after him then forget about that it was a "BCS" school but that Wisconsin goes after kids who are usually complete players if they are not the "most raw talented" players and they usually have basketball smarts it seems.

I think this kid sounds promising & agree with what was said about the fact that Bo Ryan was after him generally means the kid is a pretty well rounded recruit.
What I like the most is that the mini-recruiting drought is finally over and with some more visits rumored for this weekend, maybe there will be more news soon.
If Will is reading the board, just want to say welcome to BU.
I'm also glad that the 5/9 thing is over with!!!

If anyone is interested about this, I came across another Alaska kid that has been playing Div I in the US for the past 2 years. Doug Hardy has been at Idaho State of the Big Sky Conference for the past 2 years. He is originally from Anchorage Bartlett high school. He just transferred back to Div II University of Alaska Anchorage for his junior season.--

The 7'1" beanpole is actually 6'10", and it's down to us and SMU. We're currently the leader according to Scout.com, here's the discussion. He would be a major recruiting victory.
