Al Biancalana's Elmhurst York is off to a great start!!
They won their own Thanksgiving Tournament, the 33rd Annual York
Thanksgiving Classic,
and are now 4-0

Here are their scores
York 67 - Vernon Hills 32
York 56 - Cicero Morton 50
York 54 - Niles North 48
York 56 - Hersey 38

Joey Paul and Chris Mroz both play for Missouri-St. Louis which goes to 4-0
with 4 straight wins.

Joey has games of 2pt-3rbs, 7pt-1reb, 8pt-2reb, 5pt-3reb.
Joey is averaging 5.5ppg.
Chris has games of 11pt-2reb, 12pt-4reb, 2pt-3reb, 11pt-0reb.
Chris is averaging 11.5ppg.
Their next two games are against perennial national powerhouses Kentucky
Wesleyan and Southern Indiana.

Lance Stemler and SWIC took their 3-2 record into McKendree 11/21, & Three
Rivers Comm. College Monday night.

The game against McKendree was against their "JV", as McKendree is a four year school, and SWIC won, but Lance did not play. He is recovering from an injury in the previous game where he had to leave before halftime and get stitched up for a large gash on his forehead.

Then last night SWIC beat Three Rivers Community College of Poplar Bluff, MO, (who was previously 8-0)
78-72, with Stemler's team hot on 3-pointers, hitting 11-24.
I don't have any individual statistics, and don't know if Lance played.

Stemler's team is now 5-2.

In the above noted game against Three Rivers, Lance did bounce back & play, and was 6-11 on 3-pointers and had 29 points, and followed that with a 28 point performance.
Lance is averaging over 21 points per game, and 50% on 3-pointer.
(I hope JL is still recruiting Lance!!)

I doubt LS would come back to the Hilltop even if Les recruited him. He had the same skills last season and he never got a chance to prove himself. LS is a big-time 3 point shooter with in a big frame. Somebody is going to get a steal with him, it just won't be at BU.

I wouldn't say he got no chance to play. He did get into 12 games. But he didn't do anything to deserve more time, either. He only shot 8% on 3 pointers last year, and the ones I remember were wide open ones. He obviously needed more time to adjust to Div I, but wasn't going to get much more time this year with so many seniors and juniors.

One possible high school matchup to watch for is in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament that starts right after Christmas.
On Dec. 27, Peoria Central plays against Proviso West, in a bracket that could result in a next day matchup of central vs. Glenbrook North & Jon Scheyer.

Lance's Southwestern Illinois College has now gone to 11-2 with a win over the weekend against
highly rated and "archrival" Southeastern Illinois College 66-46.
In the game, Lance was 6 for 9 from 3 point range, and 6-6 from the line and totalled 30 points (out of the team's 66).
Lance now averages 22.6ppg and is the 8th leading scorer in junior college Division-I (NJCAA)

Joey Paul and Chris Mroz
Both are at Missouri-St. Louis (8-4)
Joey has started all 12 games and averaged 26.2mpg (3rd on the team), scoring 4.9ppg (8th on team).
Chris has played in all 12 games, averaging 19.7mpg and 6.4ppg.


Mike Rembert
is waiting in the wings at southeast Missouri and will be eligible next year. He will be a welcome addition,
as SEMO's top scorer, Roy Booker-senior 20.7ppg, and they have only 2 players over 6-4 (combining presently for 9ppg) that return.


Coach Al Biancalana
After starting 11-0, Coach Al's team went into last night's game on a 2-game skid, losing to St. Ignatius (62-50)
and to Hinsdale (50-27).
Last night they resumed their winning ways over Addison Trail, 62-41, and are 12-2 now.


Phillip Gilbert is still playing well.
His team, the Chester Jets is closing in on a playoff spot (despite their sub-.500 record), as Phillip continues to score in double digits almost every game.

Jim Molinari's name was mentioned a couple times last night on ESPN's broadcast of the game between Wisconsin & Minnesota.
Mo was given credit a lot of for the outstanding Minnesota defense.


Also, last night, Osiris Eldridge's Chicago Phillips lost to Chicago Young (74-61), their 2nd loss in a row.
They are now 8-6.

Patrick Beverly's Chicago Marshall beat up on Sherron Collins' Chicago Crane 74-70.
Beverly's Chicago Marshall is now the top rated Chicago Area team, but in statewide polling, Simeon still ranks #1.
(Bruce Weber, Jerry Wainwright, and several other coaches (Big East, etc.) were there to watch Beverly.

Lots of great teams and top players in the Chicago area this year.
The victory by Marshall at the Public League tourney came as a surprise to some, but Beverly is a real scorer.
Reminds some of Jameson Curry in high school, or a slight variant (city style) of Jon Scheyer. Will bet he ends at Champaign.

Actually, someone at scout/insiders does know about Lance.

Here is a recent article about Lance, and in case it asks for registration, I will quote some below.
It says he has an offer from Southeast Missouri, but is also getting attention from Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Texas-El Paso, Hawaii, and Kent State
and they also mention Marquette and Creighton.

Stemler, a 6-7, 210 pound sophomore forward from Columbia, Ill., connected on five three-pointers as the Blue Storm opened up a 36-26 halftime lead on Moberly.

Stemler's three-pointer with 14:41 remaining in the second half extended the lead to 53-29 and essentially put things out of reach for the Greyhounds.

While the 32 point output was a season high for Stemler, it wasn't a total shock, as he averages 23 points per game this season for the Blue Storm.

"Lance can play at a school that needs a guy to face up," said SWIC Asst. Coach Steve Campo. "He's not a high flying athlete but he knows how to play."

Stemler is a versatile offensive player who must play the four slot on the defensive side of the floor. He can use either his left or right hand around the basket, and has nice shooting range on the perimeter.

"He could play at a Marquette or a Creighton, because of the way they play," Campo said. "He has to be in the right kind of program."

This is the second go around for Stemler at Southwestern Illinois. He spent the 2003-2004 school year at the Illinois JUCO, but red-shirted due to injury. Bradley University of the Missouri Valley Conference took a flyer on him last year, but he played sparingly for the Braves in 2004-2005, burning a year of eligibility in the process.

Campo said that Southeast Missouri State has offered Stemler a scholarship. Other programs like Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Texas-El Paso, Hawaii and Kent State have inquired about the third-year JUCO sophomore.

If Stemler continues to produce this winter and play like he did Sunday at the Meramec JUCO Shootout, it's likely that his number of scholarship offers will increase in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned"

Coach Al Biancalana got the biggest win of his short career at Elmhurst York.

Last night they knocked off the #8 rated Bolingbrook squad,
66-62. D-I recruit Will Walker (DePaul) had 22 pts for Bolingborrk (15-2)
York is 16-3 and deserves some votes in the statewide ranking, and maybe this will get them the notice they need.

More trouble for the prestige of the Chicago Public League.
Last night at Chicago Collins High School, the Sherron Collins-led Chicago Crane whupped the home team 79-50, but the game had to be stopped and the gym cleared with 1:25 still left on the clock, and the outcome was forfeited to Crane as the home crowd incessantly threw debris onto the court and could not be controlled by the Collins officials.

Coach Al Biancalana led his Elmhurst York to a very fine season in his first year there, despite predictions they would be going through a rebuilding year there.

One poster on another board has said that it is the girls coaching spot that is open, but that's not what was posted on the other boards linked above.

One is Washington, IL native and ex-Purdue player, and present Purdue assistant, Todd Foster.
The other is Illinois assistant Jay Price.
