Willie Scott a candidate for assistant at Illinois?

Da Coach

Moderator
New Illinois coach John Groce thought he had his staff selected, but then Marquette head coach Buzz Williams lured away Isaac Chew, who had just agreed to become one of Groce's assistants. That now leaves Illinois with one open position on their staff. Coach John Groce wants to hire someone with Chicago connections.
This article by Illinois beat writer Paul Klee of the Champaign News Gazette suggests that Bradley assistant Willie Scott could be a candidate.

I have heard this rumor as well Da Coach. Willie needs to do what's best for Willie. I'd hate to lose him but if this is a step up he needs to accept the position. I think the question Willie needs to consider is if staying at BU puts him closer to his dream of being a D1 head coach than going to a BCS team like Illinois. One advantage of staying at BU is the ability to be a #2 HC to Geno if GG or JU leaves for greener pastures (which is likely). If Willie goes to Illinois he will be known as a recruiter and, IMO, this would set him back as being a credible bench coach.

I might disagree somewhat - if offered the spot at Illinois it would appear to be a no-brainer...heck - the guy he'd be replacing got a better offer less than two months on the job at Illinois - how can you argue staying at BU would be better?

Willie is one of my all time favorite Bradley players and I hope he stays here for a long time. Who, out of the Chicago area, has he been instrumental in bringing to Bradley during his time on the hilltop?

.I would be very surprised if he ended up at Illinois

Maybe Illinois is thinking more about trying to increase their chances of landing the #1 recruit in the 2013 class Jabari Parker. If I remember right Coach Scott has a pretty good relationship with Jabari's dad Sonny.

Maybe...but just to increase chances for a one and done?...If that's the case it doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

It's not like Parker will make Illinois a national contender next year....and that would be the only reason you go after a guy like that....now if we can get 3-4 of them like Kentucky;).....then you got something:-D

Now don't think I wouldn't want Parker in Champaign...but I wouldn't hire an assistant just to get him there for one year...

There are a lot of coaches who would....even for a recruit who is a lot lower than Parker. I could give many examples of assistants who were hired specifically to get one or two players, and then they were gone in a year or two. Mac Irvin's sons come to mind.

KDB?

I don't know if it's fair to judge Willie's results based on only 2 years. The next 2 classes will be telling. 2013 is loaded in Illinois.

Sorry, but I don't always put initials with names. Getting old I guess. How about a name.

At this point in Willie's short BU coaching career he is known for who he has kept at BU than who he has brought to BU. Willie is a loyal BU alum and epitomizes the "Once A Brave Always A Brave" slogan. I hope he stays awhile and makes his mark here before he moves on to bigger and better things... I have no doubt bigger things lie ahead in Willie's future.

Willie has to look out for what is best for Willie. I have heard that Willie hasn't heard from anyone at Illinois about the vacancy, that Groce asked some people in the know about who knows the Chicago seen well and Willie's was one of the names brought up.

My dream scenario is Ford winning multiple MVC championships, making deep NCAA tournament runs, most likely moving up, then Willie continues the success, adds to it and gets a statue of himself built in the middle of Peoria.

This is correct- Willie is extremely well known and respected throughout the Chicago high school and AAU scene.
