Billy Garrett, Jr. of DePaul is a rare case of a person with Sickle Cell Disease who is able to play competitive sports at a high level despite the disease. He has a variation called SC Sickle Cell disease, which is slightly milder than the more severe SS variation, but both can cause severe muscle pain, anemia, and acute crises that can involve potentially life-threatening muscle damage or organ failure, and they require careful monitoring of his hydration and other factors.
