PJStar prints correction to the Jerrance Howard story

tornado

"'Supervision', not 'probation'"
Jerrance Howard was given "supervision" for marijuana possession last summer,
which allows the case to be dismissed with no conviction on the defendant's record
upon successful completion of the prescribed time, in this case six months.
The case against Howard was dismissed Friday. A headline in Thursday's editions was incorrect.

I know some will say it is a small point, and the PJS treats it as such with a tiny little "Correction" buried deep off the front page..

But they correct their report that Howard was convicted and given probation - and state that in reality the charges were not pursued,
he was instead offered court supervision with the charges to be dismissed when supervision completed, and that occurred yesterday.

This is a significant difference since no record of the conviction will be recorded.

All the Kansas newspapers went with the erroneous "probation" story that they were tipped off to...so they need to post corrections as well..
will someone please tip off those guys about their responsibility to correct the story?

I view the correction by the PJS as a major clarification to the JH matter. Further, Tornados post on this is excellent. In view of this, I favor and support the hiring of JH as our new head MBB coach.

You make it sound like nothing happened though....I can imagine how this would have been discussed here if it was an ISU assistant coach

If this was a very qualified assistant coach and NOT from Peoria the administration would get blasted for even considering him at this time.....

JH will probably get a chance if he's as talented as some think.....it may be a few years yet though...

Lefty.....While most of your posts and viewpoints are excellent, I must disagree with you on this one.
1. JH did not have anything in his system and therefore was not smoking or abusing any substances.
2. He accepted "Supervision" for 6 months and has completed that.
3. He was not charged and his record was cleared.
4. He apparently has had no other incidents of this type anywhere.
5. The quantity of pot was small.
6. Pot is now legal in 2states and others will very soon follow probably including Illinois.
Let's not crucify an otherwise good guy for what was a minor error in judgement.
Remember, a number of local coaches have also had poor judgement incidents but were retained in their coaching jobs.

Lefty.....One other point regarding JH.....His case was dismissed! I believe this means he is not guilty.

while we don't know many if any of the specifics of the arrest...and thus, as so many others always caution like Kirk Wessler does with player arrests... we might best withhold some judgement...
I am actually kinda surprised he hasn't already published the actual police report like he did with Ruffin. The mere fact that he hasn't makes me think it has info that would not support his agenda.

anyway - as others have said in defense of similar infractions elsewhere-
people are fools if they don't know that just about everyone in college is doing it....
(even though I know many who do not do it) but it is the very argument of some who are now discarding that line to go after Jerrance.

Just because a case gets dismissed doesn't mean something didn't happen though........maybe it was dismissed because of who he was?...no idea really

But somewhere along the line JH was stopped and weed was in his vehicle right?.....at least that's what it seems to me. There are plenty of other coaches that will be available and with better resumes than JH IMO....it just doesn't seem to me it's wise to pursue one with this info at this time...

But Wiz...if this was a guy you knew nothing about that BU was looking at would you feel the same way?

Regarding your last 2 points....

I agree 100% about not crucifying someone for a minor error...heck even a major one...but that doesn't mean someone doesn't have to live with consequences of poor judgement.....

your last point......big difference from someone being your coach already and handling a situation then hiring someone IMO....

I'm not going after JH T.....but something obviously happened.....heck it may have been worse than recorded but changed because of who he was...or for some reason he was stopped and had a small of amount weed in his car for some reason........I really don' know. It just seems now that there will be available coaches without this little controversy that BU could hire.....

I'm not anti JH...I may not be as enamored with as you guys though....

I will tell you this though.......Over the last 27 years I have hired people who had a few blips in their past......90 percent of the time it came back to haunt me....that's all

I know lefty - in fact most people and even most media have been rather kind given the arrest...but when we have a President who openly talks of huffing, and we celebrate just about anyone who does it in Hollywood -
and with it being legalized everywhere - I personally do not think it has the stigma that either it once did or that crack or heroin till do.
I do not condone nor would I want any of my kids doing it but I think it's now in the same realm as smoking in the boys room or chewing gum during class (I know I am gonna get hammered on this one). ;)

I might be open to having Jerrance make a statement and becoming a spokesperson against drug use and that would sway me to be forgiving and not use his dismissed charge as an insurmountable hurdle.

I agree with what you are saying here but am curious to know what has caused you to have such a dramatic turn around on your stance concerning pot? If I recall correctly you have previously wanted harsh punishments for 18-20 year old kids that had pot arrests.

Chico.....You make a great point which needs answering. Was the weed in the car his or did it belong to someone else. I think JH needs to answer and clarify this and do it soon.

You have my stance half right - I do expect kids to be disciplined strongly but rarely ever see it happen but..
I have always said people deserve a 2nd chance - and I am sure you cannot ever find a single time that I said such a minor offense should result in permanent banning of someone---
and what harsher punishment can Jerrance suffer than to have the entire national media run with hit pieces against you for such a minor offense then have it quite possibly torpedo your chance of ever becoming what you've strived to be ( a head coach) your entire life?
So, no, my position has not changed.

Where did I say you wanted permanent banning of anyone?

If this was SIU, I would be less concerned about the pot issue than I would the fact that he "forgot" to notify his current employer. If he told KU about this the day after it happened, he serves a 2 week suspension to start the season at worst. People screw up, as far as offenses go, this ranks just above forgetting to pay parking tickets. Working for a top 5 division 1 program and hoping to eventually be a division 1 head coach, you have to know this will eventually be discovered. So that means that he is shady enough to think he can hide this, dumb enough to think no one will find out, or worst case scenario he is both dub and shady.

Eventually he is going to get his chance to be a HC but short-term he really damaged his chances and only because he wasn't completely honest.

well, I'll bet 95% of people who get ticketed - even those ticketed for minor drug offenses
DO NOT tell their boss or employer....and just naively assume it'll never come to light.
I really can't get too hard on Jerrance - once in his entire life he gets a minor drug citation,
then pays his debt to society, gets past the supervision - now have to suffer all over again because of a media vendetta
I think he's more than paid his debt for such a minimal offense -
personally I believe a DUI or an arrest for selling drugs is way worse...

BTW - I suspect you know that one of the SIU guys, Ryan Hare, was arrested for an underage booze incident, then literally appeared in a game that very same day he faced the judge just a couple hours earlier to have his charges read to him!
..and none of it was ever revealed or made public and Hare never missed a minute of a single game and played all 31 games plus exhibitions that year.
...and same with Diamond Taylor - who had a cannabis arrest and apparently never told Lowery because he played several successive games until he ran into more trouble.
I feel bad for the teams and those kids, but there are countless examples of violators getting zero penalty and they never got a front page PJS writeup!

So an aspiring head coach that is 34 shouldn't be held to higher standards than 18-20 year old kids? Also holding anyone to the Lowery standard is setting the bar pretty low. If you want Bradley to resemble the Lowery era SIU, I'm cool with that.
