one side note...

quietly - a relatively new DI team - just starting to play as DI in 2013 having made the jump from NAIA to DII then DI,
Grand Canyon University coached by ex-NBAer Dan Majerle has run up a record of 12-2...(they have four players who shoot 44% or better from the arc,
and they run an NBA-type offense, take good shots and average 79 points per game on offense!)
They have wins over San Diego State, Houston, Marshall, CMU...and are playing pretty well.

They are part of the WAC and have already played in the post-season (the CIT) in both of their years thus far in DI - BUT...
but they are still not eligible for the NCAA post-season tournament until they have completed their 4-year transitional period - thus they will become NCAA eligible in 2017-18.

BUT - there is a little of an uproar...
unlike the vast majority of both public & private universities & colleges, Grand Canyon is a FOR PROFIT UNIVERSITY - and some think education should not be marketed as a commodity for profit, and are especially opposed to letting these guys into NCAA Division I.

I've driven through the main Grand Canyon University campus in Phoenix, and it is really impressive. All of the buildings are relatively new, and the campus is pristine and beautiful.

Though many criticize the idea of "for profit" higher education, it seems to have worked for GCU. In a relatively short time, they have grown from a small time college, to a current enrollment of almost 15,000 students on campus, and another 60,000 who take online courses. Their athletic facilities rival some schools in the Big Ten or ACC-

Their on-campus basketball arena has a capacity of 7,200-

They have also spread out and now have satellite campuses in Albuquerque, NM, Sun City, AZ, Scottsdale, AZ, Tempe, AZ, and Tucson, AZ.

Their model seems to be working pretty well for them.

but that's just it....
the main reason other schools and their AD's and representatives like to criticize Grand Canyon & for-profit schools is...

that they are stuck trying to get by begging for tax dollars, relying on inventive ways to get money, older facilities that nobody's got the $$ to upgrade, and constantly being limited on their budgets.
Then they look at GCU and see a school that is very successful, has a lot more money they can spend - especially on recruiting, etc...

Now, as long as those schools go 5-26, nobody's gonna gripe, but once a school like that starts beating people, watch the uproar and claims of "no fair"!!

one game tonight I found interesting...

TCU - which Bradley lost to by 4 points - just lost an exceptionally close game to #17 West Virginia - a game TCU led with under 6 minutes to go...

also Brett Bisping (from Morton) had 20pt, 11 reb for Siena tonight - a kid who Bradley was recruiting

Bright spot- we held Beane way under his average
Mockevicius failed to get a double-double, Balentine took 17 shots to get 14 pts...
Evansville finally plays a solid team and can't get the win

Strange how much ISU struggled with Loyola - even on a night when Loyola (0-3 in the MVC) played exceptionally bad - scoring only 52 pts, shooting 35.8% from the field & only 14% from the arc!
But here's the killer - in the final few seconds, down 54-52, Loyola had a couple shots to tie and missed them both

Northwestern got beat 62-53 by Ohio State, Taphorn was 2-2 from the arc in limited minutes- the kid's getting cheated on PT
But as bad as Minnesota, Nebraska, Rutgers look - Northwestern almost has a pass to the upper half of the Big Ten.
