Peyton Allen leaves Wichita State

One time Bradley recruit Peyton Allen, who spent a year at Texas A&M, then left and transferred to Wichita State and sat out last season, was touted to be a key player for the Shockers who are looking to replace Fred Van Vleet and Ron Baker.

But that will not happen now as today, 9 days before the official start of basketball practice, he has withdrawn from Wichita State University "for personal reasons".

Wichita State sophomore Peyton Allen withdraws from school

An official release from the University said that Allen’s departure is not related to off-the-court conduct, a violation of team rules or his play on the court.

This is obviously the worst time for a player to leave the team. He has already burned another semester by attending school for the past month, and the season is only a few weeks away. If he transfers to another D1 school, he would waste another year and would not be eligible until semester break in January 2018. Plus, since he already used a "redshirt" year sitting out after transfer, he is not eligible to use another one if he chooses to make another D1 transfer, so he would completely lose a year and a half of his allotted 4 years of eligibility. Since he has spent 2+ years in college already, the junior college route also seems implausible.
And for Gregg Marshall, this comes at a bad time, since his roster spot cannot be refilled until next year.

I wish him well, whatever his issues are, but it seems likely that if he wants to return to playing college basketball, it probably won't be at the Division I level.

Hard to know what to make of this- the release seems to hint that it has nothing to do with basketball...
but the entire reason he's at Wichita has 100% to do with basketball.....
Regardless, I have to think I am not the only one who not only isn't surprised by this - but even half expected this...

Even when he headed to Wichita it was kinda clear they are loaded with talent and playing time isn't gonna be easy to come by..
There are reports that Peyton Allen will choose Wichita State - he won't be eligible until 2016
He's good but that might be the one place in the MVC where playing time will be hard to come by for Allen.....

But then his abilities and his defensive skills kind of argued he was still aiming a bit too high..

In that thread from a little over a year ago, we were the first anywhere to break the news that Peyton Allen was leaving Texas A&M, as well as the first to report which schools were pursuing him, that he eliminated Bradley, that Wichita State was involved, and that he was willing to walk-on and pay his own way his first year and transfer to Wichita State University.

I will try to contact our reliable sources and see if we can learn a bit more why he is leaving WSU and what he might do next.

Wish him well, but find it insane that there are some who would still pursue him with an offer to come to Bradley. What has he contributed anywhere except problems so far?
He's a shooting guard that barely has shot 30% and barely more than one made basket per game in his 2 years (will be 3 years by the time he'd be eligible here), has literally been benched by previous coaches, has defensive liabilities, and who has apparently deserted or abandoned his team right at the worst time when there's no chance of replacing him or re-using his scholarship.

it's been a week since the announcement that Peyton Allen is leaving Wichita and still no word on what he's going to do or where he's going to go..

even stranger is that there really isn't even the least bit of buzz coming either from other schools or anyone - as always happens when someone transfers - even the most obscure, non-starters.

Well ... if you believe the press release, its not surprising if he isn't looking at other schools.

The press release and the quotes from WSU and Marshall were quite vague. Are you saying that Allen is not looking to play basketball anywhere again?

I'm just saying if it was personal reasons and it was enough for him to completely withdraw from school, then he might be taking a break overall.

Nobody knows all the facts, but we can only draw on our experience and observations...
Most of us fans who have been around a while have seen endless examples of players who leave or transfer for "personal reasons", "homesick", "looking for better chemistry", "want to play closer to home", "just want to take a break", "need to find a better fit", "I didn't fit in with their style of play", "I was assured I was going to get more playing time", "I have hypoglycemia and they didn't give me a snack", etc...

But in the end, you kind of have to admit every single time the kid leaves and just looks for/chooses a different place to play - he's really thinking it's gonna make him happier. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't -
..but how many are truly UNRELATED completely, 100% to basketball - as we seem to be told, here...and the kid doesn't even look for another place to play? I can't recall such an example.
Even the example of Danny Granger, Mike Suggs, Bruce Barron, Nate Minnoy, Jereme Richmond - highly touted kids who went to BU, Oregon, Purdue, IL, etc... and had lots of issues/troubles - they disappeared, at times for 1, or 2 years but still ended up playing elsewhere.

He has only one more year to play basketball, then in 2019 his 5-year clock will run out...

so his options would be to leave college basketball or go pro, or maybe petition NCAA for a 6th year to play -
but unlikely since they only do that for repeated injuries like Egolf/Singh, or he could go NAIA since they do allow a 6th year

As far as I can tell, Peyton Allen has only played one season - the freshman year with Texas A&M,
so he has one season played in 2014-15 then 3 redshirt seasons in 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18.

An article in the Springfield paper said he has 3 years left. It might be different because UIS is DII?

I think that may be right. The NCAA rules for Division II competition are a bit different. For D2, they count only the number of semesters that a kid is enrolled, and they have a 10-semester limit. Here is that rule-
http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

By that rule, Allen appears to have only used up 4 semesters so far- his 2 full semesters at Texas A&M, and his 2 full semesters when he redshirted at Wichita State. These last 2 school years may not count since it appears he was not enrolled full time anywhere since 2016.

The Division I rule simply counts the time starting when a kid first enrolls in a college, whether or not he is competing, and even if he has dropped out.

if so, that would be a great deal for Allen to play in his home town...but they still use the phrase that his coach "expects Allen .. will have three years of eligibility."
...so it is clearly just an expectation at this point and not confirmed yet by an NCAA ruling..

they obviously would have to wait for an NCAA ruling but here's where the catch may come in.

The rule about the 10-semesters applies only from the point when you enroll in a DII which HE ONLY NOW just did.

The NCAA however states that the instant he enrolls in a DI (which he did in fall of 2014) - then he begins to tick off time from a 5-year clock --
That 5-year clock had already run down almost FOUR FULL YEARS....so NCAA may conclude he has already lost 4 years of his "clock" and has only one year left.
I hope for his sake, they rule to give him more time, but he'd then be a 23-year old "sophomore" this fall - possibly the oldest guy on the entire team and still just a sophomore.
