Savannah State will begin the descent to Division II...they have been Division I more than a decade, beginning transition in 2001-02 and completing the transition to full DI status in 2005.
They are a 4-year Georgia State University in Savannah, GA- a school known as a "Historically Black College & University" (HBCU)
Enrollment is 4955, and the university dates back to 1890.

They sponsor 6 men's sports (BB, BKB, XC, FB, Golf, Track & Field) and seven women's sports (BKB, XC, Golf, Softball, Tennis, Track & Field, VB)
The most recognizable alumnus is Shannon Sharpe, NFL player & 3 time Superbowl Champ

Savannah State will begin the descent to Division II......

a few other schools in addition to SAVANNAH STATE are seeking to transition into and out of DIVISION I
Interesting - Savannah State seems to blame Georgia Southern (our Nov. 25, 2017 opponent) as the reason they are dropping out of DI.

CALIFORNIA BAPTIST is already transitioning to DI and will join the WAC with Chicago State, New Mexico State, and Grand Canyon Univ.

ABILENE CHRISTIAN has already completed their transition to DI and re now eligible for post-season play.
They will join the Southland Conference.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA is also nearly complete in their transition - they will join the Atlantic Sun Conference.

UC-SAN DIEGO (UCSD) is transitioning to DI - they are in talks to join the BIG WEST and thus join UC-Davis.

NEBRASKA-OMAHA is kinda struggling now that they have transitioned to DI - they are finding it costlier than expected. However, UMass-Lowel , Northern Kentucky University, and Grand Canyon University have done quite well financially since moving to DI. NKU went to the NCAA Tourney in their very first year eligible and they may also be on our schedule this year (Bahamas).

Some unconfirmed talk that UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN INDIANA is working toward going DI.

a new school has announced their intention to make the move to Division I
Dixie State (not a deep south school - but instead a DII school in St. George Utah) has made plans to transition from DII to DI and join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC)

the transition process would not start until at least 2019 and last four years, so the earliest they would be full DI would be 2023-24

Dixie State University was a successful Division II school (they haven't had a losing season since 2007-08) that is now transitioning to Division I. They will begin their first season as a transitional Division I school in November, 2020 as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. They just made their first announcement revealing some of the Division I games on their 2020-21 schedule Among them, they will play a home and home against Big West member UC Davis. They will play their first ever D1 home game on Nov. 14 against UC-Davis, then play a return game at UC-Davis on Dec 2.-
