Serious financial problems now at SIU

The financial problems have been mounting but at a Board of Trustees meeting last night several notable things were discussed
including hiking tuition again for the 7th time in the past 9 years....

-There has been a "precipitous decline in SIUC’s enrollment"
"..next year’s freshman enrollment is projected to sink below 1,000 students"

-"Things aren’t getting better. And it’s quite scary"

-There are plans to "trim the university’s eight academic colleges down to five" and the "elimination of department chairs, which he contends would save about $2.3 million in administrative costs"

-also a "proposed .. 2 percent tuition hike for undergraduate students for the next academic year and an 8.5 percent increase for graduate students and School of Law students"

No problem. They are a state school. They'll just sap the taxpayers a bunch more to support the failing state system.

Missouri State just got bad financial news, too...

To save $$ they chose to cut Women's Field Hockey - an expensive sport that generates zero revenue...
and guess what - then they get sued by the women on the team claiming Title IX violaiton

That budget cut affects the system that includes 4 campuses of the University of Missouri. I don't think that is the same system that includes Missouri State University, So those cuts should not affect them.

Western Kentucky "Athletics could face cuts" - and they are considering adding more student fees and using more money from University and student revenues to support Athletics.

EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY has announced a solution to their financial & budget problems...

Their President, Dr. David Glassman, former Bradley Provost...
announced that each sport they sponsor will have a REDUCTION of one scholarship.

Thus, 20 scholarships will be saved out of 170 athletic scholarships that they currently offer
It will be interesting to see how they do with one less scholarship in basketball

The SIU Athletic Director got a lot of pressure from donors to make a coaching change, but they decided to stick with Barry Hinson. Maybe it was their financial situation. But their AD sent out this "State of Saluki Basketball" report to ticketholders-

It sounds to me like they have high expectations (win a ConferenceChampionship and an NCAA Tournament appearance), and it sounds like Barry Hinson will not get more than 1 more year if he doesn't accomplish that.

the turmoil we saw on their message board where it seemed half their fanbase was enraged when they chose to keep Hinson and many publicly said they were going to cancel their tickets...
virtually required the AD to do something like this altho I am stumped why he didn't do it sooner...
