SEMO was fairly competitive against a very good St. Louis U. team, the preseason favorite in the Atlantic-10 Conference, actually outscoring them 41-35 in the second half, though that was not enough to overcome a 16 point halftime deficit.

SEMO in a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and they were picked 9th out of 12 teams in the Ohio Valley Preseason poll-

Their leading scorer against St. Louis was sophomore guard Ledarrius Brewer, who had 18 points. He also lead them with 7 rebounds for the game. He is their top returning scorer from last year, when he averaged 14.5 ppg as a freshman.
Last years SEMO stats-

Their top scorer last year was Denzel Mahoney, who unfortunately for SEMO, left after the season and transferred to Creighton, where he is sitting out this season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Bradley has played SEMO ten times in the past, and they are 8-2 in the all-time series. The two teams have played each other each of the last 2 seasons.

their best player - as you cited - Denzel Mahoney, was really good...
..averaging almost 20 ppg but got "recruited away" to Creighton, altho from what we've been seeing in the news reports about the NCAA corruption, would it surprise anyone if the kid's bank account happened to be fatter now after choosing Creighton?

but they still have a guy with some firepower....
Ladarrius Brewer scored 14.5 ppg as a freshman and has already gone for 25 points & 18 points in their two games (incl exhibition) this year
..so we'd better lock him down...

Well we won. Our offense looked disjointed most of the time and we just generally struggle shooting. Eli does not appear to have the feel/touch to be a go to scorer in the paint. He also looked to struggle with conditioning at times, since he has to play more minutes this year. However, when he has his wind and plays at full energy he is a difference maker on defense and rebounding. I don??™t think we can count on him averaging 14+ points a game but he??™ll effort his way into 7-9 points a game and that should be enough. Pitt played great d and really helped out. Koch showed an increased confidence in the first half on both sides of the floor. Foul trouble derailed him in the second half and whistles are almost always drawn towards the biggest players so that is something to watch. The small and frequently quiet crowd made it easy to hear the on court chatter from my upper deck seats, which also made it easy to tell that van Bree is far too quiet on d. That is why, IMO, our defense slips when he comes in. But his shooting is extremely valuable, especially considering the streaky-ness of several of our other perimeter threats. We grabbed control thanks to DLo doing his best James Harden impression, driving into the lane, throwing the ball at the hoop, falling down, drawing the foul call, and then MAKING HIS FREE THROWS :)

All in all it was a good, not great win.

I liked DLO's all around game, DB's control of the ball, Pitt's defense and Luuk's 3 pt shooting...
but our shooting at times was way off....and we caught a reffing crew that were apparently prompted to call the game incredibly tight on offensive fouls and illegal screens.

both teams' offense was screwed up royal by the referees blowing whistles on so many possessions...

Yes, Pittman's defense was a big reason their leading scorer Brewer had only 11 points, was 3-15 overall, and just 1-8 from three (I believe he hit his first shot, a 3-pointer, and never hit another one).

And some of the reason Bradley's offense struggled is that SEMO played an active and shifting man-to-man defense that didn't give BU a lot of open looks.

But DLO was great (22 points), Darrell Brown was solid (15 points, 6 assists, & 3 steals), and although his offense was off, Childs was a major factor on defense (5 blocks) and rebounding (11 rebounds).
Koch Bar looked good in the limited time he played (just 13 minutes due to foul trouble), and Luuk van Bree and Ja'Shon Henry gave Bradley some valuable minutes in the frontcourt with Bar missing a lot of the game.

The next game is against Jacksonville State, a team from the same conference (the Ohio Valley Conference) that will look a lot like SEMO. They also have a lot of active guards who can shoot the ball, and rebound well for guards. So Bradley needs to work on a few things to prepare, because JSU is a better team overall than SEMO.

I still have a problem with a player, Hodgson, playing 17 minutes and only taking 1 shot.

He’s got to hit a few open looks and get his confidence and swag back. The crowd needs to beg him to attack.

NK needs a big night from 3 Wends night. I like him and KB and Child’s ,Brown of course, LVP, DLO , Boya when he returns taking the majority of the looks Jashon is a workhorse.

I love the way we are protecting the rim. Without Boya lol.

EC is a stud , he’s going to have some bigs nights. Hopefully Wends is one of them.

A very uneven game what with all of the missed shots, foul calls and turnovers but for the most part the game was never in doubt as we controlled them on defense and did enough on offense to win. It was great to see Luuk shoot the ball and shoot it with confidence. As much as Elijah struggled with his shot his effort on defense was a huge part of us winning. Nate's a shooter, he'll be fine. Pitt's outside shot looks better and if he keeps playing defense like he's done so far he'll get more playing time probably at Jayden's expence. It's getting to the point with Jayden that he'll become a liability if he's doesn't shoot it. Teams won't respect him shooting it and it'll be much tougher for us to score. DLO looks like a completely different FT shooter as he has so much confidence in his ability to create and finish. Nice to be nit picky and be 2-0 to start the season. Let's go get the next one young squires!

Luuk is back!

Luuk is back!

It was great to see Luuk back on the court! Considering he is coming off an injury I thought his movement on defense was pretty good against some quicker players. His ability to make all of his 3 point shots was greatly needed to give us a cushion, especially since some of our "shooters" offensive contributions were lacking. The highlight of the game for me was Luuk's reaction after he made his first 3 pointer!

I was out yesterday and had to watch the replay. We were ugly on offense. Concerned with Eli??™s shooting-it was ugly. Henry looks active with a great nose for the ball but we will have to work on his shooting-stroke really does not look good at the line or on outside shots. I thought Nate looked out of sorts-not sure what they saw on his flagrant foul- it did not look like much from what I saw. I am glad we had DLO-without his energy and getting to the rim-we lose-and he can hit free throws. Koch got into foul trouble but he does look so much better than last year.

We have to get better on offense-a lot better on offense

It seems like a lot of people are down on Eli??™s offense. He will be fine. He does so many other things. Plays good defense, blocks shots, dives on the court for loose balls etc...Gotta remember guys, he??™s only in his 2nd game of his sophomore season...This team is going to be fun to watch this year!

Jayden Hodgson

Jayden Hodgson

0-3 from the field for 0 points. 4 assists to 3 turnovers. 6 fouls. 0 steals. And a block in 40 minutes of game time. That has got to change. He doesn??™t have to give us a lot but that right there is not good.

I??™m glad we are winning games. That??™s great!
At the risk of sounding a little crabby, I expected more offensive cohesion and performance out of the gate from this team considering:

Where we left off last yr
Junior/senior led
Summer tour
Etc.

I can??™t diagnose why, but I trust our staff can. We need a statement win to set this thing on a upward track again.
