Even more mascot news, and this one is a bit paradoxical.

"The Seminole Tribe has once again given its support to Florida State's use of the Seminole mascot, saying the association benefits the tribe, The Associated Press reported"

Ok, someone explain this to me.
Florida State uses "Native American" names, mascots, logos, caricatures, and weaponry. They also endorse the "Tomahawk" chant, which is the epitome of glorifying warriorism (something that the Native Americans used as the main argument to force the multiple changes at Marquette.)
And yet, now the Seminoles give their blessing to Florida State.

Why? What differs here?

Could it be that the tribe themselves have an arrangement with the university that gives them revenue from sales of items?
Do they have a special arrangement that gives Native Americans special consideration regarding college admissions. Could it be that their main motivation here is monetary and that they have acquired an acceptable cash buyoff? You decide. Nobody really knows the exact nature of what's in "black and white" but even the "indianz.com" site suggests something's going on and that a deal exists.
Even the hiring of Seminole builders and workers for construction projects on campus that are paid for by taxpayers is in the deal, read for yourself.

Other Indian groups have sued to banish the Florida State mascot, but the Seminoles want it. I guess it really isn't a matter of where you stand, only an issue of what it will take to buy you off.

Here's one for the sily mascot newsfile.

For some bonehead reason, Stanford has a tree as a mascot, even though their nickname is the Stanford Cardinal. (not the bird, the color).

Just recently, the guy who performs as their mascot, was falling down drunk, so they fired him and hired a new performer.
The new one violated rules, showed up officials, and got punished by the NCAA and is now banned.
I guess the tree gets the axe... :lol:
Even the band is suspended for vandalism and they may yet be charged with criminal offenses.

Stanford used to be the Indians, but in a move of political correctness they dropped the Indians and chose the Cardinal as their nickname (as in the color cardinal- to avoid offending anyone, even birds). But they picked a tree as a mascot. It has been the laughing stock of college mascots everywhere.
