The NBA Draft is June 23, and CBS just updated their 2022 NBA Mock Draft, now with an interesting new name showing up in the projected 2nd round picks.
CBS now projects UNI's A.J. Green going at #23 in the 2nd round (#53 overall to the Boston Celtics)-

Note that former MVC and Indiana State player (and one-time Bradley recruit) Jake LaRavia is projected to got at #11 of the 2nd round (41st overall).

The NBA Draft was held last night. Duke freshman Paolo Banchero was picked #1 overall by the Orlando Magic.

The Chicago Bulls picked Arizona Sophomore point guard Dalen Terry at #18. The NBA playoffs showed that efficient perimeter shooting is necessary to success in the regular season and postseason. But the Bulls chose to go for another flashy point guard who is an average shooter at best, similar to Coby White, who they drafted in 2019.

One surprise- Illinois' Kofi Cockburn, who pulled out of last year's draft and returned to college because he wanted to get picked in the 1st round, was not drafted at all last night. He averaged 21 ppg and 11 rpg this past season, and was rated by many as one of the top center prospects in this year's draft.
He reportedly signed a free agent deal with the Utah Jazz after the draft.

And Northern Iowa's A.J. Green was not drafted, but there were reports that he signed a free agent deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

It's hard to believe Patrick O'Bryant was a lottery pick in 2006 after making an impression during two big games in the NCAA tournament, and Kofi -- with that Shaq-like body and much better resume -- doesn't get drafted. I think he will stick, though I have trouble rooting for Illini -- past or present -- because the school won't schedule BU.

Northern Iowa's AJ Green has agreed to a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, sources tell ESPN.

Anyone know what a "two-way" contract is?

The "two way" contract means the player will play either on the NBA team (in this case, the Milwaukee Bucks) or on their G-League affiliate team (the Wisconsin Herd). It is usually a better deal than just a simple free agent deal, which teams use to fill their summer league rosters and preseason camp rosters. The two-way deal means that Green will get a chance to compete for a spot on the Bucks, but is guaranteed a spot on the Herd if he doesn't make it.
Usually, teams will sign a player to this type of contract if they believe the player has the potential to develop into an NBA player, and they want to keep them from being signed away by another team. Most likely, Green will start at the G-League level and earn a low salary, but it allows the Bucks to call him up to the NBA team at any time, and the deal will switch to an NBA contract with the NBA minimum salary (about $1 million per year, pro-rated).
In contrast, a simple free agent contract or a G-League contract (non-two way) do not guarantee the player a spot on a roster, and allows any other NBA team to sign them away.

This is the same type of deal Bell Self signed with Kansas. He got paid his salary during normal basketball activities but if he got caught cheating he still got paid his salary. Oh wait a minute that's not 2 way that's either way. Sorry!!!

Kofi not being drafted is really a surprise. I think the focus on speed and 3 point shooting probably had an effect, but for a guy his size with his athleticism not being drafted at all is baffling.

The fact POB was basically unknown to teams before that tournament while Kofi had a ton of exposure for 2 years is why POB was a high pick and Kofi was undrafted. Everyone knows all of Kofi’s weaknesses while seeing untapped potential in POB. I’m guessing the end result will be similar: a few years in the NBA with little playing time then a solid career over seas.

The NBA playing style has just changed a lot. There has been a lot bigger focus on perimeter play, big men just aren't as important as before. Players also have to be a lot more versatile in their play. Kofi could dominate at times but also had some flaws (lack of mid-range shot, poor/no passing, and poor defense at times). While he could excel in College, I think he would have a very limited role in the current NBA.

A.J. Green played in his first NBA Summer League game last night with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks Summer League team beat the NJ Nets team 94-90. Green did not start, but he played 14:39 off the bench and was impressive. He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting overall. He was 4-8 from three overall, after starting 4 for 4 from three in the first half. Nobody else on the Bucks had more points per minutes played.

Note that Summer League games play 10 minute quarters instead of 12 minutes. And they are not known for playing great defense.

Good for him! I'm just glad he isn't around in the MVC to torture Bradley any more. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get more playing time in the Bucks future games. Their next game is Monday against Boston.

Also, Javon Freeman-Liberty, who played 2 years at Valparaiso before transferring to DePaul, is playing on the Chicago Bulls Summer League team. He scored 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench for the Bulls in their 100-99 overtime win on Thursday against the Mavericks. The Bulls' 1st round draft pick Dalen Terry started and had 9 points in 31 minutes.

And, Kofi Cockburn had 12 points and 9 rebounds in 21 minutes in his Summer League debut for the Utah Jazz team-

A.J. Green's second pro game with the Milwaukee Bucks Summer League team did not go quite as well for him as his first game.
The Bucks lost to the Celtics yesterday 111-109. A.J. Green played 17 minutes off the bench and was just 2-7 from the floor, and 0-5 from three for 4 points.

Milwaukee plays again on Wednesday.

Javon Freeman-Liberty didn't have a very good game with the Bulls either in his second pro game. The Bulls lost 101-69 to the Knicks Summer League team, and Freeman-Liberty scored just 4 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

Cofi Cockburn did not play in the Utah Jazz game yesterday, an 83-82 win over the Dallas Mavericks team. The Utah team has 17 players listed, so several did not play.

Milwaukee plays again on Wednesday.

In the Milwaukee Bucks' 3rd Summer League game (which they won 87-75 to improve to 2-1), A.J. Green had another poor showing. He played 16 minutes off the bench, scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting. He was 0-4 from three. He has missed his last 13 three point attempts after starting 4-4 in the first half of his first game. Through 3 games, he is averaging 6.7 ppg, is 8 for 23 overall (34.8%), and 4-17 from three (23.5%).

The Milwaukee team in the Las Vegas Summer League has one more game tomorrow against the Dallas Mavericks. It will be on ESPN at 7 pm.

In the 4th and final scheduled Summer League game, the Milwaukee Bucks team beat the Dallas Mavericks 100-89. A.J. Green bounced back from two poor games and shot pretty well. He scored 15 points off the bench, was 5-9 overall, and 5-9 from three. The Bucks finished 3-1 in the scheduled games, tied for the best record, and will likely play one more game on Sunday.

Javon Freeman-Liberty played for the Bulls yesterday and had 2 points on 1-5 shooting.

Yes, definitely. NBA teams still want size but they want their big men to be mobile and play a wing position as well as posting up.
If you look at the teams that have made the NBA Finals over the past decade and a half, it's hard to find a single team that was built around
a true low-post, back-to-the-basket center like we used to see all the time in the Finals with Russell, Wilt, Jabbar, Ewing, Shaq or Duncan.
The teams that have the best big men in the NBA (Giannis, Anthony Davis, Embiid, Towns, Jokic, Vucevic) either utilize them largely as wing players
and not strictly low post guys, or they strangely are not among the last 30 teams in the NBA Finals.
Too many teams are dominated by scoring wing players who don't ever look to feed the low post, so Kofi's gonna starve down there unless he can
defend and rebound well enough to create his own opportunities.

A.J. Green had another bad game in the Bucks' final game Sunday. He started the game, but went scoreless in 17 minutes of play. He was 0-3 from the floor in the Bucks' 80-69 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
