Rienk on crutches

I heard from a inside source that Rienk's injury is not extremely serious. But he will miss a some games to start the season.

Bradley is deep with big men, thankfully. We have Ja'Shon back healthy, and could also see more playing time for Goanar Biliew and Connor Linke. It would have been nice if Ari had returned.

Rienk suffered an ACL tear and underwent surgical repair in 2019, prior to leaving The Netherlands and coming to Bradley. He redshirted at Bradley his freshman season (2019-20).

The doctors who have examined him believe his current injury is a sprain of the MCL (medial collateral ligament), which would not require surgery. But they are waiting on imaging studies (MRI scan) for a final diagnosis and plan.

Rienk suffered an ACL tear and underwent surgical repair in early 2019, reportedly to his right knee, the same knee he injured Monday in practice. He redshirted at Bradley 2019-20.

What's the best case scenario for an injury like that, Coach, assuming it's a sprain?

PhiAlpha is pretty accurate.... usually 4-6 weeks to recover.

If it is a sprain, those will recover without surgery. But there are different degrees of sprains. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is on the inside of the knee and attaches to the femur (thigh bone) above the knee and to the tibia (leg bone) below the knee. A doctor can gently stretch the ligament on an exam to see how much it "gives", and determine how badly it's been stretched by injury, and that can determine how severe the sprain was.
Here is a pretty good explanation of the different severities and treatments-

It's tough to see Rienk Mast (1st team), Roman Penn (1st team), and Austin Phyfe (3rd team), 3 Preseason All-MVC players who will miss at least a significant portion of the upcoming season due to injuries/illness.

Well the Auburn game is almost exactly four weeks from this past Monday…probably too optimistic. Plus it’d probably be better to be cautious and ready for the first couple of conference games, if possible, especially in Springfield, which are about 5 weeks out.

Man those three are all just huge games if he misses them all. But at least he’d be ready for the bulk of the conference season. Malevy really needs to step up in his absence. I’m also optimistic Hickman could take a big step this year. Three of our five starters from last year are gone/out now, so those two need to play well on the offensive end to start well in my opinion.

This seems like relatively good news...

After further medical evaluation and imaging, the doctors' initial diagnosis is confirmed. Rienk has a sprained right MCL. He will miss 4-8 weeks.
To me, that is good news, meaning there is no damage to other ligaments like the ACL, or to the knee cartilage. A sprain involves no irreversible damage and should heal back to 100% normal with time.
Let's hope Rienk can be ready for the two early MVC games (UNI on Nov. 30 and MSU on Dec.3).
