Ohio State Gets Penalized One Scholarship

Rumor has it when guys like Oden or Conley wrap up only one year on campus, then they don't bother to finish up on classes or take finals, so in effect, they flunk out in their 2nd semester of their freshman year, and if enough of it happens, then it costs the school academically, and ultimately a scholarship.
Just maybe those one-and-done players can hurt you in the future!!

I remember when Kevin Durant left Texas, there was a story that he made a point to continue to go to classes. He didn't want to hurt the school by having them lose a scholarship too. Too bad whoever this Ohio State player is didn't think about finishing the semester out.

I had posted a few days ago that numerous people on the Kansas State boards have noticed that Michael Beasley
hasn't set foot in a classroom since the middle of December, so even if he totally flunks the 2nd semester with a
GPA of 0.00, he knows they won't suspend him and he knows it won't matter since he's never coming back after the basketball season ends.

I thought the APR (Academic Progress Rate) was calculated on what percentage of players graduate within 5 years of enrollment? If that's so, then the player they are referring to in 2006-2007 couldn't have been Oden or any of those freshmen, could it have been?

Players Greg Oden, Daequan Cook and Mike Conley Jr. left the team that year when drafted into the NBA. Bruno did not release information about whether these players left academically eligible.

A student athlete is academically eligible if he or she has at least a 2.0 grade point average and has completed the required amount of credits toward their major determined by their rank, Bruno said. The APR tracks only student athletes receiving scholarships.The sanction was also based on the latest 2007 APR scores, not available to the public until later this spring, Bruno said."

so I think it DOES indeed include Greg Oden and Mike Conley's performances according to what the text of the article says.....

That's not how I read it. It is the writer of the article that mentions those 3 freshmen, not the Ohio State official. And, again, it appears the APR only includes kids who have already passed their 5 year window of time and not graduated.

Ohio State may get hammered once again by the NCAA...

There is a developing story surrounding a highly touted junior college kid they just landed, who is being touted as a potential starter this fall.

The kid is Nikola Kecman, a 6-9 SF/PF from Eastern Arizona College where he averaged 13.4 ppg, and 44% from 3-pt range.
But even Kecman's age is a little suspicious as he is variably listed as either 22 years old already or even 23 or older?
And, as seems to be the case with so many of the Euro players, and making it hard to even track the kid, his name appears
to be spelled differently in differing accounts from different places.

Even Thad Matta was quoted as saying he expected an immediate impact from Kecman, but........

Seems, that Kecman has a paper trail that shows he has played plenty with those pesky European pro teams over the past few years,
and once the NCAA gets done investigating, they will hand down their decision, and it doesn't look good. Kecman is almost certainly
going be suspended for some games, and maybe even lose an entire year of NCAA eligibility like Iowa State's Lucca Staiger.
