STARKVILLE - Starting guard Ben Hansbrough will leave Mississippi State's basketball team and intends to transfer, MSU coach Rick Stansbury said today.

"Ben is a good kid and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors," Stansbury said in a news release.Contacted earlier today, Stansbury wouldn't comment beyond what was in the release.A message left on Hansbrough's cell phone wasn't immediately returned.Hansbrough, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, was State's fourth-leading scorer in its recent run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hansbrough started 28 games and averaged 10.5 points per game. He shot 36 percent from behind the 3-point line and led the team in free throw shooting percentage, making 78.9 percent of his attempts.

According to a friend who is somewhat connected...

According to a friend who is somewhat connected...

SIU-C Friend says his sources say they are in the final two for him. Not sure who the other school is.

and if he is like his brother he probably never takes a play off....

Ben Hansbrough's game is much different than his brother Tyler.
Ben is a 6'3" shooting guard who really likes to shoot a lot. He shot 35.8% from three and just 41% overall. He gets some open shots because teams double-team Jamont Gordon, but from the games I have seen, he takes a lot of bad shots, too. That appears to frustrate Mississippi State's coach Rick Stansbury.

Here is an article that says he is transferring because Mississippi State doesn't have adequate practice facilities.--

Usually when a kid who has started all year as a sophomore and been a key player transfers, it has something to do with differences between him and the coach. But there are strong rumors that he is unhappy with some of his teammates (Jamont Gordon) who don't pass him the ball enough.

Some discussion on the Mississippi State message boards suggest the true reason is a lot "uglier", and will eventually come out. He apparently did not get along with the coach or his teammates, and there was some reported meddling by Hansbrough's father.

This could be bad news for BU...as Mississippi State has been showing some interest in Antiquawn Beckham. Hansbrough leaving might increase MSU's level of interest in Beckham, and it also might give him reason to believe that there will now be some more minutes available for him there...:(

Believe it or not, one of the rumors I saw on the Mississippi State board was that Ben Hansbrough will transfer to North Carolina, but since he will sit out he won't play there until after Tyler leaves.
Anyway, Tyler Hansbrough supposedly worked a deal with UNC that he'd stay one more year with the Tarheels instead of going pro if they made a scholarship available for his brother.

Well, I will believe it when I see it...
The Mizzou board says he is possibly going to Missouri, Missouri State, or SIU

Thanks for posting that St. Louis Post link. I have been reading all the rumors that Hansbrough is headed to Southern Illinois or Missouri State, but this writer actually talked to Hansbrough, and he never mentioned SIU or MSU. I wonder where the earlier rumors came from?

It sounds like he isn't looking to move down to a midmajor school.
The schools he lists that he is interested in are Missouri, Purdue, Florida, Arkansas, Butler and Notre Dame.

citing an interview on a St. Louis radio station, one report says that Ben Hansbrough is leaning somewhat towards Notre Dame and is visitng there today to meet personally with head coach Mike Brey, but nothing is decided yet.

Notre Dame has a bright future - they lose only Rob Kurz from last year's team. Kurz was a good all-around player, but I think they can get by just fine without him. Here's their likely rotation for next season:

PG Tory Jackson Jr.
SG Kyle McAlarney Sr.
SF Ryan Ayers Sr.
PF Zach Hillesland Sr.
C Luke Harangody Jr.

PF Luke Zeller Sr.
SG Jonathan Peoples Jr.

Tons of experience in that top seven. The other bench minutes will probably go to one of the sophomores that didn't get much time as freshmen - SF Tyrone Nash, PG Ty Proffitt, or SF Tim Abromaitis. Redshirt freshman PF Carleton Scott will also be in the mix. If one of them can play competently for 10-15 minutes per game, Notre Dame's rotation will be set.

I think Notre Dame will be improved slightly from last season, which puts them solidly into the top 20.

After next season, they'll lose some very solid players in McAlarney, Ayers, Hillesland, and Zeller, but they should be able to replace them adequately with transfers and freshmen (assuming Scott Martin does choose ND). Here's how the replacements would line up:

McAlarney -> Ben Hansbrough (transfer)
Ayers -> Scott Martin (transfer)
Hillesland -> Jack Cooley (3-star freshman)
Zeller -> Joey Brooks (3-star freshman)

I don't see much of a drop-off with those changes, so Notre Dame should be a top 20 team for at least the next two seasons (assuming Harangody doesn't leave early).

Even though I'm an Illinois fan, I've enjoyed watching Notre Dame over the past year and expect them to continue playing good basketball. Mike Brey is doing a great job with that program.

yup, it may be that IU is now the 3rd or 4th best D-I school in the state, much to the dismay of the Hoosier fans.

A couple more articles that refer to this transfer as if it makes Notre Dame a cinch for the national championship in a couple years. Personally, I think brother Ben is a little overrated. As a sophomore, he averaged far less than Andrew Warren did this past season, and is only about a 35% shooter from 3-point range. By comparison, every single player on Bradley's roster who made at least 1 3-pointer had a much better shooting percentage than Hansbrough, except TCS.

A Hansbrough headed to ND--

Oh, brother: Irish basketball lands younger Hansbrough

And as I read all the articles about Ben Hansbrough choosing Notre Dame over Missouri, Purdue, Florida, Arkansas, and Butler, I notice that none of the articles mention the couple MVC teams (SIU and MSU) that he was rumored to be choosing between. Was that rumor about SIU and MSU ever true? Or was it wishful thinking?
