OT shooting at N.I.U.

That's really sad, I have talked to my friends who go there, and they are safe thank God. I hope everyone there is allright.

I am still waiting to hear from my friends there. I have heard from one who said they had no idea what was happening. I'm glad Bradley has taken steps with their Forewarn system of sending text messages to students in case of emergencies. I hope that more students on our campus will sign up for this system now that they see that this can happen anywhere since this happened so close to us. I hope everyone who was injured can pull through and be okay.

My thoughts and prayers to everyone at NIU ... that's really scary and sad.

It brings up strange memories of 4 years ago when I was attending BU and the campus was locked down late in the evening after some lunatic was driving through campus after robbing a gas station on Bradley Ave. Sorry about the sketchy details, maybe someone could remember better than I.

This instance is much scarier but I do know how worrisome it can be when you're "locked down" on a campus.

Sad day for NIU.......I hope and pray everyone is alright....but it sounds as if many as many as 11 or 12 have been taken to the emergency room.

I was wondering if there is anything that BU could do in the aftermath of this trajedy. I can't recall for sure, but didn't Virgina Tech close the school for the remainder of the school year after the horrible event, which happened in the month of April, that took place at their school? Perhaps, Peoria-based students that attend NIU could resume classes at BU through the end of this school year if there is a significant disruption to the remainder of the school year in DeKalb. Don't know if that would help or not, but was just the first idea that popped into my head.

This one really hits you. The VT shootings were a tragedy, as were other shootings, but it's hard to take when you're a college student and the university on the news is close to home and in your home state. It hits you when you're a student and you realize, wow that could be me very easily. All I know is that if I were in that situation, I wouldn't want to go back to school, anywhere.

There was an email sent out to all students from the President's office last night. Just a generic we're-going-to-do-everything-we-can-to-protect you type thing.

Thoughts and prayers to all of those at NIU who are suffering. Thankfully, none of my friends were harmed or even near the building. Being at a state school roughly the same size as NIU, this one really hits home. All it takes is one person having a bad day to ruin the lives of many. Sad...

Let's face it there is not much that a school can do to prevent these trajedies except create a garrison like atmosphere. The prevention needs to come from the legislature in the form of gun control. I'm a believer in the NRA but when things like this happen on a constant basis something has to give. I'm sure this is not what our founding fathers had in mind with the right to bear arms. Where is all this anger and hate coming from? That is what want to know.

My one grandson, who is a high school senior, was scheduled to visit the campus this weekend.

My thoughts and prayers are with all affected by this senseless tragedy. When is it going to end?

Hey, where did you guys find the avatars with the NIU ribbon alongside your schools? I don't feel like perusing facebook groups for 3 hours.

One of my friends was in the classroom at the time of the shooting. He was struck in the neck and shoulder but thankfully he was treated and released from the hospital. Things like this really put life into perspective. Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by this tragedy.

The fact is, there really is no way of preventing this. They obviously want to commit suicide but don't know why they have to take many others with them. The NIU one obviously baffles many people because he was an honor student at NIU, wasn't bullied and had no trouble at all. Another thing is, he was off his meds, but he bought the 2 handguns several days before the shooting. So he methodically knew what he was going to do but why didn't he do it at U of I instead of NIU? Just really strange overall. As for trying to prevent these shootings, there's really no way you can, short of putting metal detectors at every door, however that won't stop a determined student from opening fire in the quad or somewhere outside on a nice warm day. As for gun rights, i'm not in favor of allowing all students to have concealed weapons but I wouldn't mind if Professors were allowed to pack some heat. With some good training, a couple quick shots can end the threat with only a few shots fired from the suspect instead of 55 rounds shot by the NIU guy. Wouldn't totally stop someone from doing an attack but would definitely save some lives. This was the 7th school shooting in the last 2 weeks that I know of. 2 HS shootings in Memphis (targeted gang related incidents), 2 HS shootings in Dekalb Co, GA (targeted gang related), a HS shooting in Oxnard, CA where only 1 student was hit & killed, the LA Tech College shooting where 2 girl students & suspect was killed and then the NIU incident. All in just the last 2 weeks, craziness out there.
