Interesting coaching rumors

Da Coach

Part 1- Rumors started to arise a couple days ago that University of South Carolina coach Dave Odom was planning to retire at the end of this season. He scoffed at the rumors, but tonight numerous sources are reporting this to be fact. Supposedly, the players have already been told Odom will retire and a press conference will be held tomorrow to announce it officially.

Odom is 123-94 in 7 seasons, and has not made the NCAA tournament since 2004.

Part 2- This is the real interesting rumor part.
I have learned from a person close to the South Carolina program that their top target will be 1st year Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall.

After several successful seasons at Winthrop, Gregg Marshall was wooed by several schools to leave. But despite much higher salary offers, he stayed at Winthrop. Finally, after Wichita State made him an offer for a salary package over $1 million, he left Winthrop.
Apparently, as the rumor goes, Marshall was holding out hoping to get the South Carolina job. One of his priorities for new job offers was that any new job would allow him to leave if the South Carolina job opened.
It is likely that nothing official will be announced until after the season, but if South Carolina throws a lot of money at Marshall, it could happen.

It looks like there are a bunch of worried people in Shockerland--

Wow! Would that be the first time the coach of a play-in team gets a big money job at a BCS school? I'd be pretty upset if I was a Shocker fan.

I guess it is time to start a new list of who's out during and after this season, a new coaching carousel...

Arizona - Lute Olson has stepped down - Kevin O'Neill is serving as interim coach

Pepperdine - 2nd year coach Vance Wahlberg just resigned - assistant coach Eric Bridgeland will take over as interim coach

New Jersey Institute of Technology - Jim Casciano had been gone since Nov. 11 "on leave" but is back now - Wendell Alexis served interim coach

South Carolina - Dave Odom - out after the end of this season -

San Francisco - Jessie Evans steps down - Eddie Sutton takes over
(ps, Sutton took over on 12/26 needing only two wins to reach 800 career victories, and has lost his first four games, plus the next seven are all tough road games or against the league's contenders.)
Here is an interesting comment from CBSSports' Gregg Doyel on why he does NOT like this hire and calls it "rotten".
http://sportsline.com/columns/story/10557128

BUT- Sutton has already said he will NOT coach beyond this season, so USF will need to look for another coach.
I wonder if he will keep his word even if he fails to win two games this season to get to 800.

Two other present head coaches are still termed "interim" coaches,
Meredith Smith at UMES and Robert Moreland at Texas Southern

Gregg Marshall has refused to comment on the possibility that he is being considered as a replacement for Odom at South Carolina. He has announced that he will release a statement on Monday after speaking with WSU athletic director Jim Schaus.

I find it interesting that Marshall didn't just deny these rumors, since it has to be a distraction for his team.
The fact that he didn't deny the rumors may mean that he either wants to consider taking the South Carolina job, or he wants to use this as leverage to get even more out of Wichita State. If he wanted to stay at WSU, IMO he would have been a little quicker to say so publically.

Another DI head coach bites the dust......
Oregon State head coach Jay John was fired last night
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3206305&campaign=rss&source=NCAAHeadlines
He is still owed $1.1 million though 2010.

2/8/08--LSU's John Brady fired

So, here is the summary so far of the coaching changes since the start of this season.....

Arizona - Lute Olson stepped down - Kevin O'Neill is interim coach
Arkansas State - Dickey Nutt fired
Detroit - Perry Watson steps down
Indiana - Kelvin Sampson is out - Dan Dakich is interim coach
LSU - John Brady fired - Butch Pierre is interim coach
New Jersey Institute of Technology - Jim Casciano resigns - Wendell Alexis serving interim coach
Oregon State - Jay John was fired - Kevin Mouton is interim coach
Pepperdine - Vince Wahlberg resigned - Eric Bridgeland is interim coach, Tom Asbury will take over next season
Sacramento State - Jerome Jenkins fired
San Francisco - Jessie Evans steps down - Eddie Sutton takes over but doesn't want to coach beyond the end of the season
South Carolina - Dave Odom retiring after the end of the season

I just thought I'd update with Kelvin Sampson being officially gone now

Also, James Madison University's head coach Dean Keener has stepped down.

I had heard the rumors, but didn't know if there was any truth to them.
But I heard tonight that Missouri State is really making a pitch to get Bobby Knight as their next coach. It is not likely to happen, but not for lack of money. Apparently a couple big money supporters of the Bears are pushing for it.

One of them is the O'Reilly Auto Parts Corporation. Guess who has had a close relationship with Bobby Knight, and has the naming rights to his sweaters for the next couple years--

And the world headquarters of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Corporation is in Springfield, MO--

But, it seems Bobby really is looking to retire. Maybe.

Would it be cool to have him in the MVC?

Oh my, Bobby Knight in the MVC?? I would have to see it to believe it,
but then Tom Davis did show up at Drake.

St. John's supporters have begun pushing very hard to dump their head coach, Norm Roberts.
Roberts is a Bill Self disciple, an ex-assistant at both Illinois and Kansas, and a good game coach.
BUT....despite his reputation as a good recruiter, it is now apparent that it was Bill Self who worked to land the top recruits, and Norm Roberts seems to really have some deficiencies in this area.
There was a rising tide of public opinion, fan support, and even press commentary to fire Roberts even though he still has a year left on his present contract. (he is presently finishing the 4th of a $3 million/5-year contract deal signed in April of 2004)
This link takes you to an article that addresses the concerns about Roberts' recruiting.
None of their recruits have stood out and none have even been projected as NBA players, nor drafted.
Yet St. John's sits in the center of one of the best basketball recruiting areas there is, and he never lands a top player locally, nor does he even get in the door of some.
Lots of supporters want a charismatic, Bruce Pearl kind of coach that'll start right away landing blue chippers. Nowadays, one single recruiting class that contains a Michael Beasley, Luke Harangody, etc. can get a school back in the limelight immediately.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/c...highpressure_storm_norm_roberts_feels_he.html

But, the administration now announced they WILL honor the final year of Roberts' contract, but he might be a lame duck, and even more unable to recruit if the impression widely is that he is in the final year of his contact and won't be back.

I haven't heard any of those rumors about Ben but am not suprised. I think he is a great coach but is just not getting it done in recruiting. He does run a clean program and even though it is a state school it does not let just any player qualify but then you look a little further south and Stanford seems to be able to build a decent program year in and year out. My guess is they'll give him another year, UC is more known for it's academics then sports around here and I'm sure the board will take that into consideration. He probably needs to find an assistant that can flat out recruit.

I will be surpirsed if Western Illinois does not let Coach Derek Thomas go after this season. His fifth losing season.

I don't actually recall the last time Western had a winning season.
