What it Would Cost

For Indiana to lure a top coach, say for example Tom Crean of Marquette.

The Milwaukee J-S just did an article and obtained the records to show how much Crean gets paid....
the numbers are for 2005, so it's probably even a bit more than this now....but ..
here's what they show.........

Base salary: $1,655,819
Benefit Plan: $28,884
Add'l Expenses: $3,784
Plus...if Crean has any other deals such as show company, TV, radio, endorsements, etc...he could even be making hundreds of thousands more.

Here are some other coaches....
Coach School Income
Tubby Smith Kentucky $1.9 million
Tom Crean Marquette $1.65 million
Rick Pitino Louisville $1.64 million
Tom Izzo Michigan State $1.6 million
Jim Calhoun Connecticut $1.4-$1.5 million
Mike Krzyzewski Duke $1.4 million
Roy Williams North Carolina $1.4 million
Bo Ryan Wisconsin $700,000
Jim Boeheim Syracuse $377,387
Rob Jeter UW-Milwaukee $300,000

you're kidding me

you're kidding me

Whoever Boeheim's agent is should be fired. The guy's won a national championship and he makes $78,000 more than than Jeter at UWMi. What's the capacity of the Carrier Dome again?

I never thought Boheim was the sharpest tool in the shed... I have proof now!:)

I don't think Indiana will get what they'd call a "top name" coach. It's probably not even in their best interest to do so. The best thing to do is bring in young blood. Look at Painter at Purdue. Also, none of those guys on that list would ever leave their current operations to coach IU. I remember when Illinois tried to lure Crean a few years back, and he showed no interest in the job. IU is best going after a mid-major coach. Ohio State actually made a pretty good call hiring Thad Matta.

I know you are going to hate to hear this IlliBraves but the Indiana job will be someone's dream job. The only problem of finding a top name coach will be if the NCAA puts them on probation otherwise they have the potential of getting a pretty big name coach. They will have to go safe and I still think Mike Montgomery former coach of Stanford/Warriors would be a great fit.

Looks like winning National Championships pays pretty well. Boeheim is getting less than Chris Lowery still alot of money but I would be pissed if I were him.

the article talks about how schools do their coach's pay differently.
In Crean's case, almost everything is salary and then the school keeps the revenue from camps, speaking engagements, etc..
In the case of many of those guys whose salaries are $300,000,
then the coach himself can keep the revenue from the other sources, and it makes the taxpayers and press happy because they are duped
into thinking they're getting a bargain and don't know about all the extra income.
Believe me, Boeheim is almost certainly getting
what the others are getting, probably at least a million per.

I figured that Steve Alford would be the next coach. By the way, why did he leave Iowa and go to New Mexico?

There was never any offical statement from Iowa. But it was well known that there were many fans, and big money boosters who weren't satisfied with his underwhelming results and wanted him out. I think he didn't want to be where he wasn't wanted, or maybe knew he was on the way out there.

yeah I believe that he is also a lawyer so I am sure he is getting the big time money... Never have been a fan of him or the orange....

I was under the impression that Steve Alford was less than thrilled with the committment Iowa had to the future of the athletics program in term of investments into new playing/practice facilities.

New Mexico has spent significant amounts of money in upgrading their facilities and seems to have a serious commitment to building a top-notch basketball program. I've been impressed by what I've seen from New Mexico and Alford so far.

In terms of Indiana's coach, I think they will remain with Dakich if they receive serious sanctions. They will never recruit a big name or one of the top up-and-comers if post season bans are part of the deal. If no further sanctions come down the pike, they will likely go with one of the top up-and-comers, such as Tony Bennett.
