Mid-majors vs. mid-majors

Everyone's favorite conspriacy theory.
Everyone look in my thread. Everyone see the matchups I had.
Kent St/Davidson, Gonzaga/USA, Butler/VCU, and BYU/WKU.
These things happen in bracketing. That's where they fell on the S-curve. I honestly believe it's not intentional.
Am I BCS-biased for having those matchups in my brackets? I hope not.

they must not like polls or RPI unless they use them to justify a big getting a high seed. Butler got screwed. I hope they dominate.
Whether it's intentional or not, I really don't know. And I haven't been reading up on your bracketology, so I can't really comment on that.
It is quite a coincidence. That's for sure.
(BTW, great crowd at the Knapp Center to watch with the Bulldogs. Best of luck to them.)

I mean, you can give S. Alabama a 10 seed, where they are on the S-curve....or drop them solely to avoid a mid vs. mid matchup. It'd be unfair to drop USA just to avoid that.

Well why is Butler a 7 seed? They are 12 in the AP, 10 in the ESPN poll, and 17 in the RPI. The lowest seed they should get would be a 5 based on those rankings. Other 5 seeds:
Clemson: Unranked in both polls 18 in RPI
Notre Dame: 14 and 14 (27 in RPI) -lost to Marquette in the Big East Tourney...
Mich St: 19 and 19 (16 RPI)
Drake: 16 and 18 (10 RPI)
I have to say there is a LOT of preference for the big boys...

That is actually correct. How much time do the coaches have to watch other teams play and evaluate how good the top 25 teams are??? The AP might be a little more accurate, but come on, these guys might watch a couple games a week at most. I'm still disappointed with the selection committee this year, but I agree that the polls mean nothing.
Let's just face it there is a bias the permeates this sytem and it will not change because money is what dictates what happens. I think most of the better mid-majors were under seeded starting with Butler and probably Gonzaga. The Valley should have recieved another bid but ISU really just hosed themselves so it's hard to argue.

I would imagine the selection committee watches about the same number of games as the coaches/AP. I refuse to believe that they really watch more and have so much more knowledge than the pollsters. Butler got screwed. ISU got screwed.

Remember, you can't move the seeding of a team down a line just to avoid a mid vs. mid matchup. That's incredibly biased the other way.

If you guys believe that there isn't a bias then I'm just wondering how you explain it always happening. The fact is they hate mid-majors. They want the bigs to win who have the larger fan base and more money and will BRING IN more money. You think they liked it when George Mason did so well 2 years ago..they hated it because they were knocking out all their money-makers. So since mids have to get in they assume just let them play each other and kick each other out rather than giving them an actual shot at at a high major team. I'm tired of the upper hand that high majors always get..they can't just have the upper hand in recruiting but they have to have the upper hand in tournaments also. How much help can you give them??? It makes it close to impossible for mid majors.

Also, if you match 2 mid-majors it means that one will make it to the next round! If you split them, they both could lose.

mmmmm very good point.. can't really argue that except that on the opposite end they could both win haha..imagine the nightmares the NCAA would have if they had 2 mid-majors in the regional final..eliminate that risk right away by setting them up with each other
If they both win they both go to the next round. The better mids are playing each other and the BCS so so are palying the bottom mids. I am not sure if this was set up this way or it just worked out

I agree with SanFranciscoPete and BradleyGuy10. On top of what they say, I am very concerned about how the message the Committee sends to mid-majors year after year might hurt our recruiting and potential for growth as a program. Recruits that may come to Bradley will instead choose to play for really bad teams in power conferences because they see it as a higher percentage shot to play for a national championship.
I think this shows that while there are fewer mid-majors in the tournament these days, the ones there are very strong. Butler definately got shafted (what did they do differently this year from last year to deserve a 3 spot drop in the seedings!), but others did very well including Drake, Kent St and S. Alabama.
And I personally like mid vs. mid's because it gives several mids a guarantee of getting to within one game of the Sweet 16. If no mids play each other, there is no guarantee any will make the Sweet 16!
