Why Aren't We After This Area Kid?

Illinois State isn't recruiting him due to the fact they have one scholarship and are looking to land a big wing. They are really hoping to get 6'5" Donald Stewart, a senior wing at Champaign Central High School. Personally, I just post this to spark some interest. I've seen McCullough plenty times. I feel that he can be an MVC player in time but may need a redshirt year. He'd be very good at in the Summit or Horizon League.

Illinois State is out of scholarships for '08

No, they have one more. Contrary to what some may believe, Oguchi will walk on.

That's interesting news. I wonder if Oguchi knows about that? :)

No disrespect intended but I have a hard time believing a guy from Texas, who transfered from the Pac-10 to Illinois State, or anywhere for that matter would do it as a walk-on and pay his own way. Doesn't seem to make much sense. I understand it in Mischler's case, but not Oguchi's.

I am not saying you are wrong, but that is very unusual.

Edit:If true..that's great for ISU.

Eric McCullough 6'9" 220 lbs power forward from University HS in Normal, Illinois. He's got offers from Niagara, UT-Martin, IUPUI, Holy Cross, and North Florida. Wichita State, SIU-Edwardsville, and Evansville are also high on him

Eric McCullough just verballed to Illinois Wesleyan.
The article says he turned down 11 D-I scholarship offers and is NOT receiving a scholarship from IWU.
So you have to wonder if the kid really just loves the game and wants to go to IWU, or maybe some or most of the D-I offers had contingencies like redshirting or walking on a year first?

I would bet as a 6-9 pitcher, the opportunity to keep that door open by playing baseball too, had something to do with his decision.

Why would we want a guy who is only getting interest from Low-major schools (other than Wichita State)? Yes, I consider Evansville a Low-major and wish they would leave the conference and be replaced by someone like St. Louis or Butler.

I just watched the video... I think the MVC is too high for him.

But,last summer, you would almost say the same thing about Drake.
(Although Drake had at least made an attempt of running a basketball program by hiring Dr Tom)

People were saying the same thing about Nortehern Iowa too for awhile until McD took them to a couple of NCAA tourneys
I always remember Snell saying "why we ever let these guys in the conference I'll never know"

lefty-- in defense of Dave Snell, I don't think he ever said that because of the teams or the quality of the players.
He used to say that because of where they played, so far out into the sticks in Iowa, and the facility they played in that was more of a football stadium than a basketball facility.
It was like playing in the Pekin Dragon Dome.

Because for YEARS they were a lower division, directional school that played in front of about 2800 people in a IAA football stadium.

The Valley has historically been a balance between public and private institutions that ALL would consider themselves basketball schools FIRST.

Certainly UNI's success (and construction of the McLoud Center) the last few years has been admirable and encouraging, but it has not been the norm since their entrance in the league.
