BU recruit- class of 2008- Antiquawn Beckham

We'll just have to sit back and hope that Mississippi State and Kentucky don't decide to make Beckham a priority...if either one does, we will be out of it with Twany.
It's too bad we couldn't have gotten him to commit while he was here...but there is still hope for us if Miss. St. and KU choose to go in other directions.
Hopefully we can get lucky and win one of these recruiting battles because Beckham sunds like he could be a really good player in the Valley.

Curry is making a case for guys like Beckham to go BIG fish smaller pond.....

As much as we would like to believe that, I doubt it...Curry is only a big fish in a smaller pond because no one in a big pond wanted him out of HS.
If Curry would have gotten a BCS offer out of HS, he wouldn't have returned McKillop's phone calls. That's just the way it is in the recruiting game unfortunately...

True but when a kid sees his performance he MIGHT just think about his immediate playing time and that big things CAN happen at smaller ponds.

I agree with you...I think that seeing the national attention Curry has gotten over the past two years SHOULD make the two and three star HS kids that are getting some BCS offers think twice about risking going to the big school, getting lost in the shuffle, and riding the pine...However, I just think in the end, these guys have too many people steering them toward the BCS offer...and I think these kids still feel like taking a 'lesser' offer would be a sign of weakness...like they are admitting to the whole country that they don't have confidence in their own abilities to be able to play in the Big 10, Big East, ACC, SEC, or Big 12.
I wish that kids took a look at the big picture more often when they are being recruited and took the offer that put themselves at the school that gives them best overall situation for their college experience (to get a good education, to get playing time, to have a chance to win a lot of games, to be surrounded by good people, to play for a coach that you like and respect, etc.)...because 20, 30, 40 years down the road, the overall college experience that you had as a student-athlete will be far, far more important than what conference you played (or more likely, sat the bench) in.

I agree......

I'm not sure Curry was so unknown.. I don't know anything about it, but his dad was an NBA player... SO I'm sure he was well connected.

Colleges certainly knew who Stephen Curry was because of his father, but Stephen was not seriously recruited by any BCS-level schools out of HS. He wanted to go to Virginia Tech (his dad's alma mater), and they only offered him a spot as a walk-on...
He was really, really thin coming out of high school, so the only schools that pursued him were mid-major level programs...Davidson, Wofford, William and Mary, High Point, and Winthrop...those were the schools that I think were most interested in him.

An other school that offered him a walk on was Maryland. He was deemed to small to be an impact in a big conference. Recruiting is about people when it is said and done and there is no exact science on who will pan out. Some evaluators have a knack of finding those diamonds in the rough.

Hersey Hawkins played center in HS so he was not looked at by the big boys because they had no idea of his abilities.

Agreed.....and Mr. Beckham JL knows talent and sees it in you. Thats why the offer. We'd LOVE to have you. Good luck with your decision.

I don't know what effect this might have on Beckham's decision, but UAB just got a committment from a fairly highly rated 2009 combo guard, Tamir Jackson--

Tamir Jackson says he was influenced by UAB's signing of 5-star class of 2009 forward Demarcus Cousins--

This kid sounds like a similar player to Beckham, not as tall. So we'll see if this influences his decision.

Whenever it makes sense for a kid to come to BU, it never seems like he does. Hopefully that changes with one of these 4 year kids we're recruiting.

I've got a bad feeling that Mississippi State is going to step up their interest in Beckham now that Hansbrough is transferring.
I hope I'm wrong because we really need to win one of these recruiting battles for a guy like Beckham for a change.

Mississippi St has had several transfers the last couple of years. Didn't the twins transfer from there last year, I can't recall their names, but they were decent players.

I hope Beckham notices the amout of players leaving Miss.States program as these are all players that were actually getting plenty of playing time so there must be something bad about being there .

Actually, if you read the Mississippi State fan message board, their fans seem to really dislike Rick Stansbury and want him gone. I think he's done a good job there and recruited some great players, but the fans apparently expected championships.

I think you are right. That list of schools (Virginia, Wichita State, Northern Iowa, Louisiana-Monroe, and Ohio) looks old to me.

Antiquawn Beckham liked Bradley, but when Ben hansbrough decided to leave Mississippi State, it opened another scholarship. Today, Beckham took Mississippi State's scholarship offer.

Here are a couple clips from the premium article--

"I committed to Mississippi State today," said Beckham, a 6-5, 190-pound point guard. "I took my official visit there this weekend with my mom."

The former first-team All-Stater while at Ballard High School liked Mississippi State for several reasons.
"I liked the fact that they are in the SEC," said Beckham. "It's been my dream to play in the SEC.
MSU started recruiting me about a month and a half ago," said Beckham. He said his recruitment is now over now that he has committed to State. "I'm through with my recruitment now, " said Beckham, who officially visited Bradley about three weeks ago and has received heavy interest from the likes of Indiana, Bradley, Tennessee, Baylor and Kentucky of late.
