Rick Malnati

Rick resigned from coaching the Trevians yesterday. Just thinking out loud - Might he be heading to Indiana to fill the 3rd Assistant coach position with Crean?

I just heard a interview on WSCR "The Score" radio station (AM 670) in Chicago. Host Mike North talked to former Bradley player Rick Malnati about his time at New Trier and his recent resignation as head basketball coach. All Malnati would say about his resignation was that he never planned to stay indefinitely at New Trier, and that he is leaving to pursue other things in his life, though he has no specific plans right now.

Mike North is an assistant coach under Tom Les at Niles Notre Dame High School, so he has a lot of connections with basketball in the Chicago area. North asked Malnati about a rumor he believes is true, that Malnati will be hired as an assistant coach at Northwestern next year under Bill Carmody. Interestingly, Malnati did not deny the rumor, though he didn't confirm it either. He just said nothing is in writing, and he would love to be an assistant at the D1 level and to work with Carmody. They talked a little about Carmody having a very good recruiting class coming in this fall and that he could finally get Nortwestern to the NCAA Tournament.

Malnati's team, New Trier, has a couple of up-and-coming sophomore players who are certain Division I players. One is Alex Rossi, who Bradley has followed, but who is now getting interest from a number of Big Ten schools. Malnati said that Alex Rossi is his Godson! And he has known him his entire life. So, if there is truth to this rumor, and Malnait ends up at Northwestern, it would seem a pretty good bet that Alex Rossi will also end up at Northwestern. Rossi is being described by some as similar to Jon Scheyer at that age.

There was no mention in the interview of Malnati's connection to Bradley, though I have heard Mike North mention Bradley a number of times when he talks about Tom Les.

I think Jim Les will be here for a long time. However you never know what opportunities may come along in the future. It would be nice to have an alum as an assistant at a Big 10 school. Then if in a few years there is an opening he would have experience and be a potential candidate for the head job at BU. I would be a little worried about the future for Carmody at NU though.I thought they would get rid of him this year. But if it could get turned around Rick would gain some of the credit for being there for the improvement.

I think Rick Malnati would be a fantastic assistant for his alma mater. He brings a Chuck Buescher-like presence, and has great connections to Chicago-area high school basketball. Unfortunately right now there are no openings. If EB ever got a head coaching job somewhere, I think Rick would have to be a candidate to replace him.

The Northwestern job seems more likely since Rick won't need to uproot his family and move. If he stays in coaching, it would be nice to see him return to Peoria.
