Internet message board story goes bad

Did anyone else read this story about how things can go bad on an internet sports message board? Yesterday, a Nebraska fan thought he would have a little fun and made up a story about 2 Oklahoma football players who he claimed had been arrested for cocaine distribution. He lifted a template from a newspaper's website and created a bogus page featuring the story, and he then posted about it on the Nebraska fan message board with a link to his bogus story.

Many people took it seriously, even though there wasn't any shread of truth to it. The story was even picked up by a couple media outlets and reported as true (at least 2 Texas radio stations in Houston and Austin were reporting the story on air)!

Now the person responsible for this hoax has been identified, has confessed to making the story up, and he has apologized to the 2 Oklahoma quarterbacks who he accused of felonies.

But that's not the end of the story. The father of one of the players is vowing to take the message board poster to court--
"I'm going to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law," Kevin Jones (father of quarterback Landry Jones) said. "I've got deep enough pockets to do it."

The Oklahoma newspaper that had their webpage template stolen for the hoax is also considering legal action. This Nebraska fan is in big trouble.

he deserves it. that's probably libel, not to mention highly unethical. what a jerk.
 
There have been many cases of false stories being planted on internet message boards, but this case went much further. The guy tried to make it look like a legitimate story by copying the template of a legitimate newspaper's web page and then cutting/pasting in his fabricated story. This lent legitimacy to the story and caused it to spread.

Didn't an Iowa fan do something similar to Erin Andrews by posting a newspaper article/picture of him grabbing her breast? (photo-shopped)

Actually, it clearly says he's talking about people who call him on the phone.

it seems it doesn't matter what form of response they use, the PJ Star people never seem quite satisfied and discount the value and validity of their opinions, just because they doesn't know who they are, and whine about the "anonymous" angle.

This is a cheap, and worthless attack, as he is simply trying to attack the opponent without bothering to address the topic or the issue.

Same thing exactly, but you don't hear me whining about it.
but when they take unwarranted slams and cheap shots, then someone needs to call them on it even if it is written anonymously!

here it is........and if they had posted it on BradleyFans it would have been deemed extremely poor taste and unfair.

All I did was point out that Luciano was referring to phone calls, not anonymous Internet postings as you wrote.

Why you turned that into what you wrote above is beyond me. We've had that discussion before. We know your opinion on the matter. We get it. Other people here have told you why the authors of editorials don't sign them. Perhaps you should go over that again. You apparently don't get it.
 
IMO - bottom line ... the only good articles/info that have to do with Bradley coming from the local rag (aka the Urinal Jar) are from Dave Reynolds.
