New Jamar Smith Trouble

Yes, it's everyone else's fault. I love how in today's society no one is responsible for their own actions, and it's always someone else's fault. It's even worse with athletes. "He's a good kid" and "He just made a mistake". News flash - A large number of athletes aren't good kids, and get away with murder (sometimes literally) because of what they can do on the field of play. Jamar has been hanging out in local watering holes in Peoria and Champaign since school got out. These are the consequences of his actions, and his alone. Whatever punishment he gets, he deserves. No one is above the law, not even the great Jamar Smith.
Ok BB, where did I once say it was everyone else's fault. I believe everyone walks their own road. He is no kid! He is 21 years old, he's a man but sure looks like he isn't acting like one. Also because he is a athlete makes him NO different than anyone else when it comes to laws and rules. He should be treated just as everyone else would be, no more and no less. As for where Jamar has been hanging out this summer, thats your story as I don't know. If thats true, that sure isn't a good choice on his part rather he's drinking or not. If he is guilty, he should get the same punishment anyone else would get for what he has done. Also, I am a long ways from refering to him as great. I would use the term great only in refering to the women and men (some who are not 21 yrs. old) in our Armed Forces.

I'm going to hold judgement here as there are to meny ?'s and not enough answers yet. If there is no written confession, or arrest and test, then it looks to me it would be a very hard case to prove.

As someone said, revokation of probation does not require the same level of proof in court as a criminal conviction. He is already convicted of a crime, and part of that penalty was to stay clean. If the stats's attorney feels justified, they can act on this.

And I agree we should withhold our judgement until more is known. But there have been reports on the Illinois message boards about Jamar's late-night activities for the past year.
Incidentally, when a couple Bradley playuers had legal issues, it didn't take long for the choruses of condemnation to come from all the Bradley-haters, and the media.
I don't recall anyone at the PJ Star saying "we should hold judgement as there are too many questions and not enough answers yet".

Here are a couple new articles from this morning. But there isn't really any new information, other than the expected quote from Bruce Weber that he's disappointed to hear about this, but he will reserve judgement (like he did for 6 months after Jamar got out of jail).

The reports of Jamar's activities while on probation have been widely reported. We have tried to avoid pure hearsay here on the BradleyFans message board, but here is a report that aired last night on WCIA in Champaign with many first-hand eyewitness reports.--

Reports like this surely won't help Jamar's case.

I know BradleyBrave reported Jamar's activities at bars all summer and now this report from WCIA confirms this with first hand eyewitness's. My ? here is with this so widely know where were the people close to him (family, friends, coach Weber and the other coachs, players, fans) that may have tried to help him. Ya like I said, Jamar is a man now, walking his own road but it is sounding like he has a drinking problem along with making bad judgements and just not caring.

Bingo...with all that's at stake, where is the supervision?
They should literally have had a person assigned to check and keep an eye on Jamar 24/7.
Maybe some will say that sounds 1984-ish, but it is actually what he agreed to in order to keep his scholarship, so how is it that Jamar is out cruising the bars and half the student population knows it and is posting about it, but the staff at Illinois is astounded by it??

I know I sure wouldn't want my kid to be under that kind of LAX supervision.
Doesn't Illinois have an assistant that was sorta Jamar's confidante and guru?
Wasn't someone supposed to be the guy watching Jamar? If Weber wants to lay off the blame, then which assistant is going to get it?

T, I don't necessarily disagree with your post, but how sad is it that we even need to suggest that a 21 year old man needs constant supervision because he goes to school for free and can't keep himself out of the bars in the middle of the night. If all this is true I hope he never puts on another basketball uniform again ... anywhere, ever. Give it to someone who wants and deserves to wear the jersey.

The part you bolded from the story answers this. In any case, we'll see his plea when he goes to court. Also the PJStar story is from the Associated Press.
I'm not sure stories in the PJStar are not edited and reedited no matter where the story comes from to their liken.

Now that's hilarious.

Also-- what's with all the people trying to blame the cops, blame the DA, and blame you and me??

Jamar Smith was under a strict probation, he knew full well what the terms were,
so what's he doing in bars at 2AM?

This is worse than "using bad judgement", this is flaunting the law, thumbing his nose
at the judicial system and the citizens who want our roads safe from drunk drivers.
With all thos news reports and interviews where other students are testifying to
having seen him drinking often, his goose is cooked.
Probably USC-Aiken or Northern Kentucky would be interested.
Most of the Illini fans were pretty much banking their entire seaosn on Jamar and the disgruntled transfer Legion.

Also-- what's with all the people trying to blame the cops, blame the DA, and blame you and me??

I hope you don't think in anyway that I am one of these. Blame can only be put on Jamar. As I said he is a man and he walks his own road. I ? the way it's being handled from that night to the present. Like I said, the right/best way would of been to arrest, test and charge that night. Then its clean and cut dry. I'm not wanting to point fingers at anyone but Jamar for even being there. As for some students saying they have seen him drink, why didn't any of them confront him and say something or report it to Weber? Now's a great time to come out with I saw him doing this and that. Maybe, just maybe they were to drunk to do the right thing!
Also the 24/7 watch thing, come on T! He's a man, 21 years old, we have kids dieing at war. The only 24/7 needed for him was someone there if he needed and called them for support and I'm not talking about help getting out of jail. I'm like you, I'm having a hard time believing that there was a support team and if there was, that they didn't know or hear about him hanging out at the bars, drinking or not drinking. Jamar is recieving some of my tax money to attend school and I have a problem with miss use of those funds.

Once you're a convicted felon and on probation, you lose a certain degree of freedom. Basketball-wise, his probation is irrelevant. Much like the Tank Johnson incidents of a few years ago and the Cedric Benson incidents of this summer, there comes a point when an organization has to say 'enough is enough'. Clearly basketball isn't a priority for Jamar Smith, as evidenced by his behavior this summer. Therefore, it's time for the University of Illinois and Jamar Smith to part ways. You can split hairs all you want the 'arrest and test' and 'maybe he wasn't drinking', but the fact of the matter is that he has been putting himself in bad situations all summer, drinking or not. If he cared about basketball he wouldn't be putting himself at such a risk. He's made his OWN bed, now it's time to lay in it. END OF STORY.

There is nothing that I disagree with what you have said here. I just like things cut and dry, as it makes things RIGHT. I will add one thing to what you have said and that is if he cared about the people who stood by him, he also wouldn't out of respect for them put himself at such risk.
