What schools won't play us?

Got into a discussion over on the Richmond board about "Braves." I know there are some schools that won't play us because of the nickname but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head. Someone over there asked. Anyone remember?

Since Bradley has taken away anything that has to do with an Indian logo it should not be a problem ; it is more of an excuse.

so they can play chief illiniwek's fighting illini but not bu?

Wisconsin can't get out of playing Illinois.
I could be wrong (which I usually am), but I think Iowa and Wisconsin use political correctness to not play certain teams but it does not control their conference that they are in and therefore can't control them from playing the Illini.

Kinda funny, IMO... and kinda funny to have the convenient excuse. But then again, doesn't this put PC pressure on the conference? A conference that is part of the NCAA?

Oh how money talks.

Great quote from a movie that goes something like this: "There are two types of people in the world. Some are smokers - some are not. The key to life is finding which one you are.... and then be it"

Yeah, but with Illinois, that one is REALLY out of their control.

As far as not playing BU and other teams with Indian names...it really has nothing to do with "avoiding mid majors" or stuff like that. It's just a PC move made to look better. Right or wrong, this ban helps their image, and that's the driving force behind it - not anything related to the actual on-court product.

Hawkeye's is a slang term for Indian scouts since they were so good at spotting anything,
so in effect it is a racist term, kinda like implying all Afro-Americans can jump & play basketball.

Nice info T but I meant the name Iowa itself. Quick google found this under origin of state names.

Iowa -From the Iowa River which was named after the Ioway Indian tribe. The whole state is non-PC.

So is Illinois then..

We all just need to face it. America obviously has a deep root with the Native American culture, and people need to start seeing it as an honor rather than degradation. No more mascots is understandable, but not playing schools with the name...give me a break.

Oregon also has this policy against playing teams with Indian names. However, when money was on the table, the Ducks scheduled the Illini at the United Center.

If Florida State said they would come to Madison for a football game, I would have to believe that it would get scheduled rather quickly. The two basketball teams met recently in Madison for the Big Ten/ACC challenge.

I strongly disagree with what they are doing. Not playing teams with Indian names just makes them look silly and petty! None of these schools have mascots that are offensive as far as I know. So why not play them? The names should be an honor to those they represent. Wisconsin is not doing their part, and people are just going to forget that these tribes ever existed, which have been a big part of our country's history.

Well, that's Wisconsin's loss, and so ironic considering all of their satellite schools all have "questionable" nicknames as well!

Iowa does not (or did not) allow the Chief to travel with the Marching Illini to Iowa City.

Wisconsin's policy is actually out of date, in that it specifically mentions "imagery" which has not been in use since 1993.
