Good stuff from KW. I'm against the Valley expanding and I'm glad to hear that there isn't any thought of doing it at this time. Adding SLU and another team would only weaken the competition within the league.
 
I have said this before: SLU would have an unfair advantage if they were allowed to re-join the Valley; it is their own fault that they joined a league that is so far away that it costs so much to travel, the Valley is doing fine and does not need anymore teams at this time.

I kinda of agree except that SLU is in a nice size market which could only help our overall potential revenue base. The question could be who else do we pick up or who do we dump. SLU left for the potential of the revenue potential of the larger east coast market that was presented to them. At the end of the day we need to find ways to increase the conferences overall revenue potential without weakening it's brand. SLU could only help on both.

For an example, Depaul weakens the Big East's brand but the revenue potential in Chicago (not withstanding recruiting) out ways their negativity. I would even bet that the league would rather dump Marquette then Depaul if it had to.
 
I'm not sure I entirely believe Elgin when he says that he's not interested in expansion. He's a smart guy, and knows that while the MVC's current set-up is very good, the additions of two large-market schools like SLU and Butler could take the league to an even higher level exposure and revenue-wise. If the Valley is or was very interested in expanding, I doubt they would show their hand that easily. The advent of the MVC-MWC Challenge is proof positive that Elgin is interested in taking the league to the next level. SLU and Butler could be a part of that, despite what Elgin may say publicly.
 
Good post BB....Elgin would not give out info on what's going on for the future with the press! Heck, JL had to break the news of the MWC vs MVC news......:lol:
 
Wow. I liked how Altman laid down the law to the whiners about the Valley getting only 1 bid last year! It's refreshing to hear a coach talking about how their league or their team deserved the bids they received rather than whining about playing in the NIT.
 
Yes Kirk the Logo looks good...it would REALLY look good if it said the BIG VALLEY instead of the Missouri Valley. Does anyone relate to the Missouri Valley anymore? Does Peoria, Northern Iowa, ISU, Drake.....does anyone living in one of these places tell people "you know, Peoria...we are in the heart of the Missouri Valley"...oh yeah NOW I know where you are located.

I don't like ONE state/location (Missouri) representing teams from Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.

I've got no problem with calling it the MVC.... I'm an old-fashioned traditionalist. But, then again, I liked the college game when it had no shot clock and teams ran the 4 Corner Offense ;)

Well, the area all the teams are in has pretty much been called the missouri valley since the 18th century, so I guess your argument does stand for less educated people...(there are more than you know!). I think the Missouri Valley has been around for almost 100 years??? I'd probably be against a major change in the name.

Yeah I think at this point it would be pretty silly to change the name of the conference. The Valley is pretty recognizable, so at this point if you changed the name you'd have to build that name recognition back again.
 
Change is usually not accepted well and I understand and appreciate those that want to keep the name but I thought that the MVC was trying to re-invent itself and show that it is and competes with the BIG boys.

A name can generate brand awareness, new $$ and a chance to make a bold statement. I know so can winning and I really like the idea to go back to the 150 and above RPI mandate more than anything......hello ISU......
