MVC/MWC Challenge

I can't remember if the MWC has a contract with CSTV or not. That aside, from a TV perspective, this sounds like something ESPNU can turn into an all-day special, I say. Along with squeezing a couple games on ESPN.

And from a scheduling perspective, you can never complain about quality non-con games.

In terms of RPI this will work out for both conferences. I'm glad to see two conferences of our caliber make something like this happen. It could have been so easy for this not to happen.

This is great. I think this will onyl do positive things for the conference, hopefully we can dominate the MWC like the ACC does the Big Ten!

Sounds like a good deal to me and should help out on some scheduling woes! As of last years conference RPI.....the Mountain West (#9)finished
right the the Valley @ (#8 ).....both ahead of conference USA @ (#10)....

PS....anyone else want a home game with Utah and marshall henderson....that would be a nice win!

Home game- yes.
Road game- hope not! I cringe when I recall the last time Bradley played at Utah.

Here is the rest of the story from the PJS just posted....

In the link, it says this:

"Because there are 10 Valley schools and nine in the Mountain West, one MVC school would sit out each year. Commissioner Doug Elgin said that would be the lowest seeded team in the previous year's conference tournament, with a contingency to prevent one school from missing two Challenges in a row."

I was thinking about the article BigMike posted which led me to considering what this past season's matchup's might have been.

Going with the assumption the MWC gets the Home court advantage (5 home and 4 road) and using each conferences' Media Day Projections from last year, you'd get these matchups (final RPI included):

62 SIU @ 25 BYU
24 UNLV @ 105 Bradley
123 Mo St @ 95 Utah
59 New Mex @ 46 Creighton
33 ISU @ 82 SD St
219 Wyoming @ 199 Wichita St
131 UNI @ 198 TCU
167 Air Force @ 10 Drake
251 E'Ville @ 265 Colo St

(UNM tied for 4th with SD St but had more 1st place votes so I put them higher)

Looking at last year's CHN Top 144 Countdown, you'd get these matchups (Countdown rank first and RPI in parenthesis included):

24 SIU (62) @ 37 BYU (25)
46 SD St (82) @ 44 Bradley (105)
60 Creighton (46) @ 67 UNLV (24)
83 Wyoming (219) @ 64 Wich St (199)
76 UNI (131) @ 96 New Mex (59)
130 Utah (95) @ 93 Mo St (123)

109 ISU (33) @ ??? ??? ???*
* so I will insert my guess

109 ISU (33) @ NR Air Force (167)
NR TCU (198 ) @ NR Drake (10)
NR E'Ville 251 @ NR Colo St (265)

The Mountain West has its own network called the mtn. Some games are on CSTV and VS. Games at the Mountain West school will be on one of these networks. Only games that have a chance to be on the ESPN family of networks would be games at the Valley schools.

I would prefer it to replace the BracketBuster. It would help us shed the 'mid-major' label even more.

Don't hold your breath. I will go out on a limb here and state that the MVC and Bradley will NEVER shed the 'mid-major' label.

We could try to be like Memphis. But I think that would lead to sacrifices we don't want to make

Well put! While I was growing up and in college (70's-80's) Memphis State, as it once was called, was always a top tier program. So, they have recent history of being top tier. Our program was at the top 60 years ago and that makes it hard to get back there. You are right, while it would be nice to be like Memphis, it is also nice to not be like Memphis!

How about Gonzaga and Xavier! I'd take their recent success.

As long as I never have to watch a player like Adam Morrison....

Besides him showing some emotion after that tough tough loss to UCLA what are you talking about? Was because he had a personality that was a bit different. The kid played with a lot of heart. We would be lucky to have such a talent on the Hilltop. IMO

Haha, I have nothing actually against him. He seemed like he gave Gonzaga his all. I just got tired of hearing about him that year and thought he was a little over-rated

Dickie V weighs in on the MVC-MWC Challenge

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/dickvitale/news/story?id=3675173

"It is great to get rid of cupcake city games, bargain basement goodies that teams play to get easy W's. I love the fact the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, the Big 12-Pac-10 Hardwood Series and the Big East against the SEC, even in a limited format, exist. Now there is a new match-up in store. The Missouri Valley Conference and the Mountain West Conference announced an agreement in principle to the formation of an annual Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge for men's basketball. All members of both leagues will participate in the Challenge, which will feature head-to-head competition between nine Mountain West and nine Missouri Valley teams on an annual basis. Specific details regarding the Challenge will be released at a later date. Officials from both conferences are working towards a four-year commitment that could begin as early as November 2009. It will be fun to see the likes of Creighton and Southern Illinois meeting the UNLVs of the world."

Just for the sake of comparison..........

MVC Ranked #9 in RPI, #5 in SOS, present record vs. DI = 29-21...best win UNI over Auburn, worst loss Indiana State to #324 NIU.
MWC Ranked #6 in RPI, #12 in SOS, present record vs. DI = 34-14...best win Utah over Ole Miss, worst loss New Mexico to #263 UCF.

head to head....MVC is 2-1, Creighton & Drake over New Mexico, and Utah over MSU
