I'm surpurised SIU SOS is so low @236. They have played some good teams. After seeing UMKC, and FGCU I wonder if #16 isn't a little high for the valley.

This fact shows how worthless these numbers are this early in the season. SIU's SOS is so low because UCLA's current RPI is 138, UMass is 326, and W. Kentucky is 257. All of those teams will have much better RPIs before the season is over, and SIU's SOS will look a lot better.

In the "good old days" the RPI wasn't even calculated until every team had played around 10 games or so. It's completely bogus at this point in the season and shouldn't even be looked at.

Just win and all the RPI nonsense will sort itself out accordingly over time.

A couple wins for the Valley like BU's and MSU's lifts the Valley to the #9 conference RPI now...nice jump.

BU's RPI is 80, ISU even at 6-0 is at RPI 183...that's scheduling for ya...

wow..the top four picks in the preseason are all over RPI 100.
And before the few who are the RPI-police start whining, it IS relevant because it reflects losses and weak scheduling.

If you lose and your RPI is lousy, then the team expects that...but if you are a good team, are 6-0, and yet your RPI is around 200, then you should fire whoever did the scheduling!!!!!

Look at ISU's strength of Scheduling right now...
it is ranked #335...out of 343!!!

As much as I don't care for the RPI this early in the season, one thing is very clear......

isu's schedule is absolutely terrible!

RPI SOS: 335/342

Sagarin SOS: 319/347

edit: t, just saw your post on this same subject.

And no......I have never "whined" about the RPI. I just believe Sagarin is a much better indicator of the best teams in the country at this point in the season.

ISU may have a chance to raise its RPI today, as they play a UC-Santa Barabra team that actually has two wins.
sadly, though, those only 2 wins for UCSB are the ones they got over the other two horrible teams in ISU's tournament, Winston Salem State and Nicholls State.

the present cumulative record of the ISU opponents is 4-24!!
Of the four wins by the six different ISU opponents, they are over teams whose RPI's are...337, 337, 263, and 313!!! Santa Barbara's two wions are also over really high RPI teams!
But it doesn't get a lot better....as their next 3 upcoming opponents are a combined 3-11, one with a 333 RPI.
This stuff is killing the Valley!!
