ISU chant is %@$#&!

Hey, I'm a long-time reader of this board, but a first time poster here.

Looking over at ISU's web board, there seems to be a bunch of ISU students who are chanting a "su*k D---" chant when the other team commits a foul :-o

http://redbirdfan.com/msgforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11129

We'll see who "su*ks" after Saturday.

I am going to the game this Saturday, and will be sure to youtube the chant for all to see how bad it is. I guess they say it's easily heard on t.v. and radio. I'll be sure to also record look at the scoreboard when the games over and we won. My prediction BU - 68 ISU 65. Dodie Dunson gets his revenge!

Is anyone else going to the game? Where is a good place to go before/after the game. I see there's a Buffalo Wild Wings in Bloomington.

Welcome to the board!

There is a similar thread already going on this topic:

Have fun at the ISU game and definitely make that YouTube clip. Will give everyone an opportunity to remember how much class some fans can have (I realize this is not just an ISU problem).

I will be at the game, as well as many others from this board! Easy trip to make.

I'll worry about the Redbirds after Wednesday's game! Obviously there are two types of schools and fans, those with class those without. Let's just make sure we remain above the fray.

When did all of this happen?

It sounds as though it started when Southern went there this past Saturday.

Yes and no.

The very first issue with this cheer started last season around the time we played you guys and Drake. Then it seemed to go away and the obscenities at the end of the cheer did not resurface at all this season until the SIU game the other day. Now the s**t has hit the fan all over again about this.

I honestly didn't know what to think about this when it happened last year, I mean the students are college students, teenagers to young adults and they are gonna act like that. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say that it is ridiculous because Bradley students don't do that because I know that they have although maybe not to that extent. To be honest it bothers me to sit in the student section close to the visitors section and hear students yell obscenities, especially directed at a single players family, I often turn away embarrassed. But I figured I couldn't get mad over it at isu because some Bradley students do it too and just don't get caught. Sometimes the students need to remember that it is after all a BASKETBALL game. There is no need for the obscenities.

Just to be clear, not all Bradley students do this.

As Phantom stated in the thread linked above... The you..you...you...youuuuuuu...suuuuuuuuuck... chant has been prevelant for the last few decades... (not just at ISU... UNI and InSU do the same one... without the last word)

But the d*ck was not added until last year with a section of drunk students... then in spread...

You may have heard individual students yelling obscene things over the years, or even groups of students in the Versace years, but the chant after the opposing teams foul have not included that word until last year.

The adminstration has been aware of it since it started (last year vs. DU and BU). They decided sent an email to all Red Alert Members, and had the cheerleaders and band refrain from participating. While the timing may appear it had something to do with the article in the PJ Star- trust me, they were already brainstorming after the DU game, which was several weeks before the BU game. I think they were hoping it would die off without making a stink out of it, since that usually backfires... and it did. Students that were requested to refrain from the chant just did it louder vs. BU.

They are continuously working on ways to get the situation resolved, but there is only so much you can do. Students will be students... especially intoxicated ones.

We have finally got a ton of students interested in coming to the games- we kinda don't want to alienate them now that they are excited about Redbird Athletics.

Do you have any ideas on how to stop it Tornado? Ban all students who you see cussing, or threaten to? Then risk losing a portion of the student fan base that we have tried so hard (successfully) to get interested?

I don't like it anymore then anyone else, including BU fans, but the options just seems limited.

If I had the option of having every student yell d*ck in a sold out arena every night, or having 5 of 6 student sections empty, and never hear it again... I would choose the sell out student section with cussing... maybe that isn't the way I "should" look at it... but it is and if I said anything different, I would be lying

Please direct any recommendations to ISU President Al Bowman. He is always receptive to emails from fans... even BU fans I would assume ;)...

Thanks for the thoughts... all of them have been thrown around already and I know the adminstration has heard all of the ideas... I guess we will see what happens from here on out...

as always, yup........

-get on the PA and request, many times if necessary, to stop the behavior.
Even ask the head coach to do so, as has been done elsewhere, even by foul mouthed Bob Knight to stop unruly student behavior.
trust me, it worked...

-station security or event staff personnel right where it is happening, that'll help stop it

-ask the people who put up their own internet site teaching and coaching fans on doing this to stop it...
http://isuredalert.com/

and don't say they haven't done just that, I have seen the page that coaches prospective fans to chant "awwwwww....you suck - di*k"

I do notice they have changed that page since then....

The announcement(s) over the PA, whether from the coaches or one of the administrators hasn't happened yet, but I have a feeling that it eventually will if this thing continues.

They do station "security" guards & event staff right in front of (and within) the student section but since those guys are students themselves, they usually don't do much.

As for adding/changing things on the Red Alert website and/or sending out emails to members discouraging them from such behavior, that has been done, but it tends to backfire as 21 pointed out. Not saying it's right by any means, but face it...tell some drunk students what NOT to do and what do you think will happen? Of course they will do it just to spite the situation. I don't agree with whats been happening, and it is an embarrassment to the student section and the University in general, and I'd like it stopped. But curtailing such things isn't always easy.

Another way that would work-
Eject fans who do it. That is what other schools do.
Start with the obvious offenders who are leading the cheer, or are in the front rows of the student section, and keep going until the desired effect is reached. If it doesn't, begin banning students who do it, but I doubt it would need to go that far.

Likely, no more than 1 or 2 ejections will occur before the activity will end. However, as long as there is no retribution for the activity, it will continue.

That might be what has to happen. I'm in the front row of the student section and I can tell you with complete certainty that nobody in my row, or the several rows behind me yell any obscenities at the end of the cheer.

When you hear it, it seems to come from the very top and/or middle of 1 or more of the sections. But then you get people who say "it was these guys or it came from back there" and so on...With 4 lower bowl and 2 upper bowl sections for students which are full for each game, it's not easy to see who the culprits are.

I'm willing to bet that, since the cheer was officially banned just last year the administration doesnt really care whether or not the crowd which is not endorsed officially by them does it or not.

They're just covering their behinds.

If students decide to not come to games because they can't yell "d!%k" anymore, then you've got a bigger problem on your hands.

The best way to deal with it would be for Jank to grab a microphone and point the people out who are being so rude and disrespectful to the University. Public humiliation or the threat has historically been a great d?©tente.
For you Maryland haters GW did that after the Duke incident and I have seen Ratface at Duke ask the student body to refrain from some hurtful remarks regarding an opposing player where there was no bad language just areas where he thought the students' behavior would not show his school in a good light. If ISU wants to show their brand as being classless then it will just continue because it can be curtailed with just a little more calling out from the coaches to the Administration.

I am really kind of troubled to hear that this is your opinion. While the students heckle opposing players like crazy, they don't do it in a vulgar way. When someone hurls a personal insult that crosses the line, they get silenced by everyone else immediately... More and more, it has become funny and distracting material, almost absurd in character. The refs may or may not get a serious ear full, but it's nothing you couldn't hear on cable television. The student section at isu would barely be allowed on HBO.

Also, at isu, it's not just a few bad apples.. Every year I'm there, it's many, many rotten apples universally chanting the "you suck ----" chant and flipping us off, shouting 'FU BU', wearing the "Buck *******" shirts... Which I might add is the most ridiculously trite and subpar slogan possible. It takes real class and cognitive ability to switch two letters to form a clever insult.

If we (the student section) created a shirt, it would probably consist of an anagram, but that would just confuse the isu students too much.

WAIT! I've got it! If anyone can figure out this anagram, I'll buy you a soda or beer: Next year's BU vs isu t shirt: Sushi Sitar

Like tshirts that say "The only good bird is a dead bird" are helping....

It comes from both sides, everyone has different levels of morality. Just because society isnt at your level doesnt mean it is anyones crusade to make it so. Just ignore it.

How is Buck ******* different the Pluck the Birds???? And please don't tell me because in Buck ******* the B and F are reversed... and in pluck the birds they are not...

How is FUBU different the I Screwed Up????

You have to keep everything in perseptive big guy...

The d*ck chant sucks...we know it, you know it,.. it is turning into the crappy schedule argument... its getting old... not just here, or our RBF- EVERYWHERE
