Obscene ISU cheers banned by administration

I'm happy to see that ISU is trying to correct the situation. I hope that the students realize how many young kids are in the arena to watch the game and stop using the cheer yet this year. Although the you suck cheer might be gone, I did like the your not gonna make it cheer. They should work on that one some more.

The story about the parking lot reminded me of the time at isu we ask an usher where our seats were. He saw we were Bradley fans, but acted real friendly. When we took his directions we found ourselves no where near our seats. We looked back and he was laughing and pointing us out to others. After the Bradley victory we thanked him. He wasn't amused anymore. Division 1 team---Division 3 fans.

Did anybody else read the comments from the ISU alum from Morton that said she was going to throw her ISU sweatshirt in the trash because she was so embarrassed by the way the fans acted at the BU-ISU game. ( it is pretty bad when one of your own makes a statement like this.)

I saw that and was hoping the PJ Star would put it up on their site like they did with Rick LeHew's letter about the player suspensions a couple weeks ago. But it was never posted on the website.

It might explain why their attendance is down so much.

I know there are posters from ISU on this board so I wonder if they would care to comment about the Morton Alums story?

And what do you want them to say? That it's embarrassing and they're all glad that cheer is being banned in the student section? That there's no excuse for people who behave like doofuses? Haven't they already said that? What else do you want them to say?

And I think we've carried this to its end, especially since the ISU administration and a lot of their fans (to their credit) have gone overboard to see that things change. We will have to awit to see how much it changes, but I think things are going to better if the ISU administration gets involved.

Even more on fan behavior....apparently, after decades of the same stuff, several D-I coaches have gotten religion and want unruly fan behavior cleaned up.

"In a season when coaches at Indiana and Illinois have issued postgame apologizes for the antics of crowds at home games and the volume of profanity-filled chants from student sections has grown to the point where other schools, including Iowa, have attempted to deal with the matter, coaches believe fan behavior should be addressed.

???I think it is incumbent on each school to regulate its crowd and while nobody wants to dampen student enthusiasm, there is a fine line between nasty comments and cheering for your team,??? Minnesota coach Tubby Smith said.

Smith said it is the vulgarity of some chants that has taken a turn for the worse.

???I do think it is something that will likely be addressed,??? Smith said

You get some where ever you go, however at carver you don't see cheerleader leading chants that are obscene, and you also don't have a deafening "D*ck" after a cheer from the entire student section. For the most part, I would MUCH rather take my children to Carver to watch a game.

I agree that action should be taken against any fans that are shouting obscentities but you cannot blame the Morton lady for letting her feelings be known about this issue just as I believe you should not have to listen to that garbage ; I guess what should be said is lets show a little sportsmanship as BU and ISU make for a good rivalry and there is no reason for anyone to not be able to go to these games and still have a good time.

The difference is that the ISU cheerleaders and most likely athletic department encouraged this behavior.

My demographics would normally place me at ISU. I was fortunately able to go to BU. I'm a farm kid, born and raised, and I've got some hick runnin in me. However, I even I was surprised at the behavior of some of the ISU students. I think that was one time in my life where I truly felt "above" another without meaning to at all. Take it as you will.

In a nutshell, this whole thing got blown out of proportion IMHO. The fact that multiple writeups have appeared in the media (even our own school paper) about our fans and then our admins were subsequently shocked into action in many ways makes us look worse than the obscene cheers themselves. Am I proud of the profanities/obscenities yelled by our fans? Not 1 bit. It's a shame that a few students (not the whole section, trust me) had to try and be funny and ruin it for everyone. But stuff not unlike this happens everywhere. Show me 1 college basketball arena where every fan and student is 100% peaceful, personable, respectful, and dosent use 1 hint of foul language, and I'll crap a solid gold brick.

Last time I checked, it's a college basketball game. Do people (not people here, just people in general) really think that ISU's students are the only ones who have been vulgar at times? You get that everywhere. Maybe our students were a bit easier to hear, but trust me, you get MUCH worse at MANY other schools. I admit, those students adding vulgar/profane words to the tail end of our decades-old "You...Suck" cheer is very unneccessary and classless, but students will be students (aka stupid), especially when they are excited and/or intoxicated. I guess I just cant seem to decide if people are honestly offended to this magnitude...or if they are just looking for something to complain about. Am I saying that our fans need to be vulgar to be rowdy & loud? Of course not. But one of the reasons Redbird Arena was so much fun throughout the 90s was due not only to our successful teams, but also to our rowdy fans. Many of those fans have since gone away. Some are trickling back, but not enough. Just when attendance started to pick up a bit and we started to get back that atmosphere, something blows up (this whole situation with the vulgar cheers for example.)

Whatever the case, it's pretty much overwith. None of the spirit groups (cheerleaders, dancers, band) can participate in starting that cheer ever again, however I'm sure the students will continue it to some degree. In time, it will probably phase out completely.

I did see more Buck F*radley shirts then normal... after I saw your post... i checked into it. One of the smaller book stores on campus, that is not affiliated with university, was selling them for real cheap and they sold a ton of them before the game...

Also-here we have a knowledgable ISU fan claiming the "nickname for Richard" was not added until last year.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=114236#post114236

But this writer says that he's heard it for years, and numerous people also have testified they have heard that word used regularly in chants as far back as the 1970's!
So maybe part of the problem is that the ISU fans pretend it doesn't exist!

As I've said before, The "You Suck" cheer, done after a foul, in one form or another has been around for decades. That is a fact. People turning it into "You Suck D**k" was in fact NOT around until last year. That's when it started. Any chants in the years or decades prior involving the word/name "D**k" (as in Verace for example) was in a totally different context, NOT chanted after a foul! The words might have been similar, but the way (and when) in which they were used, were not.

No matter what, it's all over with. The cheer is gone. Rejoice.

Thanks for confirming that...me too--but in all honesty--I was disappointed last year at home, when your Slack got his shoulder separated against the pole under the basket. I sit on that corner, and some of our students were yelling some foul comments/language to him, and wearing "ISU sucks" shirts..so we aren't perfect either--from what I saw and experienced THIS year at both venues was a step in the right direction;)

Free speech rights or not, College basketball is a family event. The isu students need to have a little courtesy at least. I don't have any kids but i'm sure 99% of parents wouldn't want their 5-10 yr old going around and telling their fellow biddy ball players that they suck d*ck. Some people just amaze me.
