Iowa cleaning house?

As many as 4 current players, and one high profile commit are said to be leaving Iowa--

MVC connection for former Iowa players-
Tony Freeman left Iowa a year ago and is now at SIU.
Josh Crawford is already playing at Indiana State.
Guard Jeff Peterson is said to be transferrring to Missouri State, and the early rumor on Jake Kelly, possibly Iowa's best player, is that he might transfer to Indiana State.

I didn't think of it as cleaning house. I thought he had one more year left before they cut him loose. It seems like an implosion of the program.

It would be good for Indiana State and the Valley if Jake Kelly does end up in Terre Haute. But there are rumors elsewhere that it is not a done deal yet. Apparently, as the rumors go, there are coaches at other schools that would like to get Kelly.

By the way- Bradley was one of many schools that recruited Kelly out of Carmel HS, near Indianapolis.

Here are his Scout and Rivals lists. Some of those coaches may be the ones interested in him now-

This is double-edged sword for a Hawkeye fan. Not only do we lose these players, but 2 of them will end up regularly playing against Bradley, the only team I root for over Iowa.

Kelly is an amazing player. Over his last 8 games of the season where he ran the point for Iowa, he averaged 20 ppg, 6 boards, and 4 assists. One of the color analysts for the Big Ten Network predicted that Kelly would not only be First Team All Conference next year, but that he would contend for player of the year. A slender and quick 6'6 player with mad ballhandling skills, he will be a horrible matchup problem for Valley teams.

This might be the most significant transfer player picked up by a Valley team since Sommerville (who also left Iowa).

Jeff Peterson is finally going where he belongs...a mid-major. His stats look nice from Iowa, but he was a turnover machine. In fact, when he got injured and Kelly took over PG duties, the turnovers dropped significantly. Plus, his shot leaves a lot to be desired and at 6'0, has a lot of trouble getting it off unless he is wide open.

Not a happy day for a Hawkeye fan

This all sounds like great news for Devan Bawinkle. Might be like his good old days in the State Tourney.... take the ball down himself and then go 1-on-5 and shoot.

Da Coach:

Do you have a farm you would like to bet on this issue?

He will be a Sycamore.............watch the news.

I am not disputing the report he is transferring to InSU.
I am reporting the rumors that are out on the internet. Kelly is a good enough talent that it would not be surprising if another coach or two tried to persuade Kelly to consider another school.
Some coaches can be very persuasive, especially the corpulent one.;-)

I like seeing good players enter the Valley. It raises the talent of the league and the profile of the league. It also makes Bradley step up as well and get better players.

On a slightly different topic, Greg McDermott, who is known for a lot of player turnover, has a player leaving Iowa State.

Clinton Mann, a 6-7 freshman forward, will transfer from the Iowa State. He is a freshman from Overland Park, Kan., who played a total of 43 minutes in 18 games this season.

I promise you this T: Iowa will do their best to keep Indiana down. Not many IU fans within the Hawkeye fan base. But unless they end up with a few frosh studs (unlikely), 11th place will be our home for the next couple seasons. At least there's football season coming up in 5 months to soften the blow.

In fact, I think Iowa would be a 6th-8th place team in the Valley next season.

"Next season? They would have been 9 or 10 this season!

I don't know about 9 or 10...probably around 5th-6th. Remember, this is a team that only lost to West Virginia, Boston College, and Drake (when Drake was playing very well) in the pre-conference season, and beat UNI by 20. They also had 7 losses during the B10 season by 8 or less, and many of those came down to foul shots at the end.

I think they were a bad team, but incredibly young this past year. But when the best and 4th best players transfer, you're gonna take a huge hit which is why I think the 2009-2010 team will be so terrible.

Jake states he wants to be close to his dad/family/friends and home in this article, if he winds up somewhere other than INSU it is going to be a real shocker

Iowa is not cleaning house, Lickliter does not want any of these players to leave. Also in news at Iowa, it sounds like the groundbreaking for their new practice facility is being pushed back a year or two. Not good news for Lick. He has players leaving saying the style is boring and they don't know their roles and now his recruiting tool of a new facility is being pushed back.

At ISU, McDermott lost Mann and today, Wes Eikmeier. Mann had picked ISU over Creighton and Iowa, but he looked very non-Big 12 this year in the few minutes he played. Not big enough to be a power forward and not fast enough for small forward. Eikmeier battled illness and injury this year and basically said in his comments about his leaving that he felt he would never be able to get his body to the point it needed to be to play in the Big 12. He is about 165 pounds. Greg wanted Wes to stay and work hard to get his body built up, but Wes opted to go elsewhere, very likely to a smaller and possibly less rigorous conference. I suspect he will end up at Colorado State.

The same day ISU lost Mann, they got a verbal from LaRon Dendy, a JUCO PF that was a top 100 player out of high school and had signed with Clemson before having to go JUCO.

we know about Dendy as he has played with Dwight Buycks at Indian Hills...he is a solid player...
Eikmeier was going to be for Iowa State what Matt Roth was at IU...a lights out kinda guy...sorry to hear he's gone.

The thing is, ISU has a very similar player to Eikmeier in Scott Christopherson and Lucca Staiger can be a lights out shooter as well. Too many of the same thing and Eikmeier was the least developed of the three. I wish him the best and wish he had stayed, but props to him for admitting he was not up to the challenge and I hope he finds a place where he can succeed.

Bradley lost 4 starters from their 2007-08 team and look how they finished this year:o . With good coaching it CAN be done. Lickliter is also a good coach and Iowa should be able to finish above IU.

According to Springfield, Missouri, Sports Talk radio, Peterson has enrolled at Missouri State and plans to play basketball, but has not received a scholarship offer.

Good Luck on Tuesday.
