Oscar Robertson says he's glad the Fieldhouse is gone

Kirk Wessler has a brief blog from Detroit about a dinner last night for writers that Oscar Robertson attended.
They were discussing the raised floor for the Final Four at Ford Field, and Oscar recalled it was "like Bradley".
Kirk told Oscar the Fieldhouse was torn down, and Oscar said “Good!”
When reminded that Cincinnati was 0-3 at the Fieldhouse with the Big-O, he replied "we were homered".

It truly was something to see a game at the fieldhouse...you could literally feel the bleachers bounce when the crowd got rowdy...the noise resonated from the arched roof to the point you couldn't hear yourself yell....they would dim the lights just before tip-off and you could feel the nervous tension in the air as you were packed together rib to rib with your fellow bleacher bums...it was awesome! Miss the place, man!

Im Old I remember

They stopped playing in the fieldhouse when I was a Senior in high school. The thing that I remember was a lot of people screaming funny comments at the players and refs. I think the fact that they cut the lights at game time really gave people more confidence to cut loose and be anonymous. I also think the band was able to keep playing during gameplay. The drum beat really fueled the clapping. I remember it as much louder than the Civic Center. I had hearing loss after many a game.

IMO anyone who ever saw a game in the Fieldhouse misses it. But without Carver Arena the Braves would still be playing a 1970's non-conference home schedule.

Big O

Big O

Saw Oscar go down all three times at Robertson in my college days. About 12 -15 years ago, my wife was on a shopping trip somewhere (Chicago area I think) and Oscar was doing a book signing. She got in line to purchase a book fo me. When he was signing it, she mentioned that she and I were BU grads who had seen him play three years at Robertson. He looked at her and said, "God, what a nightmare that was to play there." The crowd, the raised floor. But just as important as all these was a great coach named Orsborn and a lock-down defender named Gene Morse, who always drew Oscar as his defensive assignment.

P.S. to Future Walk-on:

To this old timer, LOL means: "Loving Our Lives." And hoping you are blessed to do the same.

Hey, I was looking on some google and mapquest satellite maps, and the Fieldhouse is NOT gone yet!
They apparently haven't updated images in a couple years, so you can still see the Fieldhouse just as it's always been...

the satellite images on google and mapquest are quite different but both show the Fieldhouse still standing.

people old enough to watch games at the Field House probably don't have "lol" in their vocabulary...lol
Boy, you are so right. My first year of season tickets were 1967. Don' use lol. Started officiating in 1970 and gave up my tickets till I retired in 1992. Got to work several Manual vs Central games in the fieldhouse . Nothing like it but the Assembly Hall. Oh well, sure do miss the Fieldhouse. Progress must go on. "once a Brave always a Brave"
P.S. just goes to show you I thought lol meant lots of laughs. Man I am old.

Or, perhaps it's just another episode of ............... THE TWILIGHT ZONE!

The google maps streetview was taken with the Fieldhouse still standing. The parking deck and Markin Center were just being built. It certainly looks different that if you drove past it today.

As an aside, you can really start to see the arena "bowl" take shape, in that you can see the supports for the aisles and get an idea for where the seats will be now. . .
