Ben Brust to Iowa

tornado

New member
I have learned that one of BU's recruiting targets, Ben Brust, has called Iowa head coach Todd Lickliter and verbally committed today.
There will be confirmation on the various recruiting sites shortly.....

the article from yesterday about Brust's visit to Iowa does still mention Bradley prominently
but says he left the Iowa campus still undecided....
"With offers from Iowa, Butler, Northwestern, Bradley, Davidson, and Southern Illinois on the table,
the Mundelein, IL native made his second trip to Iowa City early this week for one more look.
Ben Brust plans to make his college choice shortly."

Both Rivals & scout.com have brief stories...

per Rivals...
"Ben Brust wrapped up his college tour on Tuesday morning in Iowa City and headed home ... to do some thinking.
With offers from Iowa, Butler, Northwestern, Bradley, Davidson, and Southern Illinois..

"Iowa coach Todd Lickliter and staff have been hard at work on the recruiting trail... that work paid off as the Hawkeyes received a verbal commitment from one of their top prospects, Ben Brust."

per scout.com...
"An excited Brust made a commitment Wednesday afternoon to a Big Ten program.
???I??™m excited, I??™m a Hawkeye now"

He would have been a perfect player for Bradley's system that relies on 3-point shooting.I wonder if Brust talked at all with all those kids who were unhappy and jumped ship at Iowa?

I really hope I don't rain on anyone's parade, but I will only be echoing a few of the Hawkeye fans' concerns...

almost every player Todd Lickliter is landing is a mid-major caliber player...

sorry if that offends...
but he beat out nothing but a bunch of mid-majors for Ben Brust..
same true for Devan Bawinkle, Brennan Cougill, & Cully Payne...and Marble - who lots are saying will need to redshirt...
I'm not saying those aren't good players or maybe that they might be diamonds in the rough...but they are all 2-3 Star recruits (a couple are rated even lower than that by Rivals), and Marble doesn't even have an offer from anyone else...and only has interest from the likes of Buffalo...
This is the BIG TEN, you have to land the top talent somewhere along the line...
the last couple coaches sure didn't and got themselves fired...

I'm not so sure about that Tornado.

Iowa's gain was a big loss for both Butler and Northwestern. Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins was also in the mix to land Brust, but it's certainly more of a significant loss for Butler and Northwestern, the latter of which made a strong late push. Brust was enamored with Butler coach Brad Stevens and would have been a monster recruiting steal for the Horizon League school. However, you have to consider the fact that with the success Stevens has had, coupled with the propensity of Butler coaches moving on to bigger jobs, that it's very likely Stevens would not have been around for Brust's entire career

3 of Brust's final 4 schools were from BCS conferences. (Iowa, NU, and Stanford) And Butler is a high major playing in a mid major conference.

And say what you want on Cully Payne, but he had offers from DePaul and Alabama.

In Licklitter's system he can get away with less heralded players if need be. That's what he did at Butler and was very successful there.

in the three years we've been following Bawinkel, he's proven us right despite interest from WV & DePaul...
Payne will do OK at Iowa...he's solid but not a 4, 5-Star caliber like other Big Ten Schools are landing

I was just about to say the same thing cpacmel. I don't think Licklitter's style of coaching is conducive to the typical 4 and 5 star, prima-donna, me-first recruit. He proved he could win consistently and even beat the "big boys" by recruiting "system" 2 and 3 star players while at Butler.
