Phillies sign Pedro Martinez

The Phillies have signed Pedro Martinez. He's 37 years old, and hasn't played since last year. In his last 3 seasons with the Mets, he had, by far, his 2 worst seasons (2006 he was 9-8 with a 4.48 ERA & 2008 he was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA), and in 2007, he appeared in just 5 games due to multiple injuries. Will he help the Phils? Or is this an act of desperation to hold onto their lead in the NL East?

I think he is nothing but insurance or they signed him so no one else could. If he was anywhere MLB ready he would have already been on a team, regardless of his demands on salary.

This guy is SO washed up. His fastball is slow and straight down the middle. He'll get lit up in the minors and quit before the Phillies (hate 'em) ever bring him up.

I pitched some decent innings during the World Classic! It's a pretty good move with zero down side for them. Imagine if they get a Pedro that was 90% of what he was for a month or two.
