Yet another gender equity issue - ticket prices

tornado

Bradley's men's & women's basketball teams play their home games in completely different facilities....yet there are still some who advocate the concept that it is unfair that ticket prices differ between men vs. women.

Seriously - if they charged $25 for courtside tickets at ICC for the women's games like they do at the Civic Center for men's games, then would they many people?

"According to the report published by the Wellesley Centers for Women at
Wellesley College, among the top 25 men's and women's teams, college
charged nearly three times as much, on average, for single-game seats for
men's games. Additionally, the average highest-priced season ticket package
came in at $233 for women as opposed to $2,500 for men."

Yet-- read this..some argue that this trend defines women's sports as being worth less....that this is blatant "sexism" and even hint this is "bigotry" and "discrimination".

"athletic departments are engaging in "institutional discrimination that is
camouflaged as sensible economic practice" by charging significantly less for
women's competition."

so, obviously here's the solution.....lower all the men's event prices (& play the games at ICC! ;)) and have the athletic departments go bankrupt, or raise the prices sky high for the women's events.

Thankfully most of the reader comments beneath the Chronicla article are sensible and call out the writers as being really stupid!

Wait they're going after TICKET PRICES instead of gender segregated sports?

I agree, I'm generally socially liberal (I may lose respect from every poster on this board for that statement... ), but pretending like mens and womens sports should garner the same ticket price is absurd. In probably no other area where discrimination abounds is it as 'justified' as when discusing gender, particularly when it comes to feats of physical prowess. If this is the arguement they want to make, I agree with Guinnes - Abandon mens and womens sports, and may the best ma... err... person win. Men would comprise every team, competition and event.

Pretending like mens and womens sports are equal is idealistic, but just plain wrong. You give me whoever just won the WNBA title and put them against BU, I'll take BU to win 7 out of 10...

I really don't get the argument in this article. There is no way a woman's game would receive the same # of fans that they do now with lower ticket prices. If people saw the entertainment value as being equal, they would pay...but I am sure that only happens at UCONN, Tennessee..etc...
but those women's programs compete at a very high level.

Well said. Agree with EVERYTHING that you posted.

theoretical quesiton:
When Wimbledon holds a men's championship and a women's championship, should the prize money be the same, even if the income, viewership, attendance, and revenue for the two different championships differ enormously?

I know one thing for sure, if women's basketball drew tremendously and provided 95% on the income in the athletic dept.,
we'd hear more than a few people arguing it should NOT be shared with the men's programs!

Let capitalism rule....:p

If College Organizations can charge more/make more for their particular "product", let them...

If Pro Tennis Organizations can attract top female players, and fans, to their events without matching the men's purses, let them....

amckillip I'm a social Libertarian which is closer to liberalism then today's conservative standard for social correctness. We could probably have a good animated discussion on this with the majority of guys on this site.

Ok who said 7-10? More like 10-10! I'd believe most Universities are trying to maximize their revenue from their sports team regardless of gender. Is this another area where we need the governmant to get involved? I don't think so!

It would be just like health care. They would put their nose in it at all levels and mess it up! If they just would just stop legislating what a private organization should do we'd all be better off. Let the capital markets take care of themselves as long as there is a fair and open system across all borders. True and open competition will always trump IMHO any government controled system. If you think the present day system is not controled then try buying insurance to cover yourself from another state that may have a cheaper better plan! Capitalist Libertarian and proud of it!

We should start a crazy psychotic smear campaign titled "EQUAL ticket prices are SOCIALIST ticket prices". VIVA LA CAPITALISM!
