ISC Smoker(Less)

Once again time for the annual ISC Smoker Weds nite minus the smoke. So no more Bill Self type $800.00 suits getting ruined.

To be held at the Lariat club featuring Jim Les and Bruce Weber fielding questions from a panel of sports writers AND from the audience.

The event is sold out and I feel very fortunate to have gotten in at the ground level with a table of 10 waiting for me every year. A couple esteemed posters that have some dirt on me get invited every year to sit at my table if they promise to keep what they have quiet:)

Cocktails and hor devours starting at 5PM and the event usually runs until around 8pm with many straglers hanging on well into the evening.

If anyone has a question they'd like answered tos it out and I'll see what I can do.

Jim and Bruce are both great at this event and the ISC does a great job as well as Kouris.

I'll file a report sometime late Weds nite or early Thursday morning...and by early I mean close to Noon....:)

I promise. ;)

Plus...what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! :)

I've attended this event, but not since BW's first season at Illinois. Too many times the audience showed too litte respect for both coaches. Dan D'Orio would spend half the night asking for quiet.

IMO it's gotten much better in recent years....alot of the people attending have taken it upon themselves to "police" the crowd and keep things in check. I'm looking forward to some afternoon golf and a night of talking hoops with the coaches and friends.

OK...we got the Golf outta the way not lets move on to phase 2 of the evening.:)

I agree...the one year it was out of control as far as 'noise" is when a bunch of Illinois fans were yaking when the BU coach had the floor and they were quickly shot down. It was quite anoying AND like Chucky T pointed out....its monitored very well these days.

Should be fun to here what BOTH coaches have to say.....

I was there Dogs, and it wasn't just when JL had the floor. It was continuous throughout the whole program no matter who was trying to speak. Shouldn't have to be monitored.

Just got back from the Smoker. While I love all the events BU is involved in or sponsors this one is unique and quite a blast.

The crowd was attentative and courteous to all speakers......

I'll just give a recap of things as they come to mind....Coach Les questions. Best player as of today after some thought... Sam Maniscaclo....End of year impact player player (projected) Taylor Brown.

SLU to VAlley....JL NOT in favor of it. Freshman standout. Also after some thought....Milos, at least from an offensive skill set. Not enamored with his D. In general, when asked about the freshman and who stood out....he said, "nobody", meaning that NONE stood out as a glaring weakness. He didn't notice them like he usually does freshman. (which is good)

Sticks..... JL has been patient with him. He knew coming in he would have to wait the kid out. Hes showing signs of coming around but is 100% convinced he will be a very good Valley player before his time at BU is up. This year...JL says he is showing signs he could steal some minutes.

New rule is confusing, even to the coaches, refs will "utilize" an imaginary arc under the basket for charging calls. JL is wondering how they will subjectively call that. Both coaches say....draw the circle and adopt the NBA rule.

Both coaches don't like AAU ball.....DSE NOT getting to play his Senior year helped us land him.

Biggest concern.....interior play. Biggest strength..depth allthough he understands as well as anyone how quickly that can disappear. Is AW rusty....JL..he's ahead of schedule as far as knocking off rust, at first JL thought Christmas now he says Thanksgiving just in time to play Illinois. HUGE laugh from crowd...he was serious about him being ready though.

Wesslers wishful thinking starting five. THoughts on EM starting over Sammy. Answered like a polished polotician. Nice problem to have...

Toughest places to play.....SIU/WSU.

I'll have more later for those interested as things come to mind.

Again...great event...wonderful nite with Weber and JL "on their game" and many, many laughs and interesting tidbits/thoughts expressed by both of them.

Thanks for the recap. Always interested in anything and everything on BU basketball, so post whatever else comes to mind.

I'm not only looking forward to it, but I'm counting on seeing AT on the floor at least five minutes each and every game this season!

The coach, and former All-MVC player, and former NBA'er says SamM is the best guy on the team... Armchair benchcoaches say he shouldn't start...
