ISU beats Quincy

ISU downed Quincy 66-50 in what I believe is the last MVC exhibition game. Eldridge and Phillips both played 30+ minutes, and if Quincy could have thrown the ball in the ocean, they would have made it a close game.

ISU was outrebounded 40-39, but that doesn't always mean anything.

They only won by 16 with 2 of the stars playing regular minutes? IL State's season is in the dumps LOL. I think I saw about 30 posts related to this after the Lewis exhibition.

Yikes...ISU was outrebounded by a team that does not have a center, and plays one forward (Billy Baptist) who is 6-3, and the other forward (Brock) who isn't much of a rebounder (he had only 2).
Quincy's starting five players were a combined 8-33 and the entire team was 4-19 from 3-pt.
I am stumped how this wasn't a 50 pt blowout as ISU nailed 250% as many 3-pointers as QU.

Is there anyone going to predict who ISU's 3rd starting guard is gonna be....?
We all know OE and Lloyd Phillips will start, but Alex Rubin started this exhibition and was 0-3 with absolutely nothing to show for his 15 min., while Terry Johnson was 4-4 and 11 pts in 9 minutes (but of course, no assists ;))
But will Jank start two guys that are 5-10?

Quincy also outrebounded the #23 team (Illini) in the Nation by 1 rebound too. (same margin they outrebounded ISU). :D

Matt Coates? He and Phillips are the only guys under 6'0 on the roster. ;)

Quincy out-rebounded Illinois also.

They are a pretty good club who is predicted to win their league. The GLVC is one of the best D-II leagues in the country FWIW. Holding them to 50 points and 21 in the 2nd half is acceptable for an exhibition. With 6 new players and 3 freshmen getting good minutes that is a decent effort i think.

Jank will start the 5 guys who play best together. If he wants a ball handler with OE and LP, it might be Rubin. If he wants a defender, it'll probably be Austin Hill. If he wants a scorer/penetrator it might be Johnson. The line-up Sunday against SIU-E will tell a lot and with the way he played last night I wouldn't be surprised if Johnson becomes the other freshman starter.

In all fairness, Quincy was picked to finish ahead of Lewis this season.

agreed, but the vote by the league's coaches was very, very close

and there were people who claimed when Billy Baptist was playing at ICC, that he was better than the starters at Bradley which included Zach Andrews, Crouch, Ruffin, Franklin, & Tauai

Oh, and Danny....

Given what I saw in St. Louis last year, and also down the stretch when Phillips was having his "meltdown" so to speak, my assumption is that Rubin will be the 3rd guard...

Jank seemed to trust him down the stretch of the season...I would imagine that still holds weight.

Had a chance to see the game yesterday in B/N and from what I gathered it was a very sloppy affair. No continuity in the play as the refs were in mid-season form with all the whistles.

Lots of bobbled balls by the kid #34 and Odiakosa never had the best hands to begin with. Rubin as told to me, started because Justin Clark missed most of the boot camp with tendenitis and is working himself back into game shape. From what I could tell, he's a good shooter but he did miss his first few attempts before dropping like 3 shots in a row behind the arc.

Not sure ISU will really play with a legitimate PG this year. Saw the kid #13 play some point, #10 I think that was Johnson, Rubin, Phillips, Eldridge all took turns bringing the ball up court.

Eldridge is still a chucker, as he seems to think he's still in STL with some of those ill advised deep 3 pt. attempts. But he had his typical highlight move very early in the game a nice reverse layup.

That Carmichael kid #34, well all I can say is check his birth certificate as he's clearly not 18-19 years old. He's got a full grown beard and seems to have moved ahead of both Thornton and Robinson.

Didn't see enough to make me think they're better than last year, but didn't see enough to make me believe they'll be worse either. 3rd place could be a fair assessment.

Well, the HOOPS edition in the PJS today has US 3rd (not the deadbirds) and them 5th!! I like that A LOT better!! But then I remember they picked us first last year:roll: Anyway, I would love for us to finish ahead of them this year, and I believe we WILL!! I believe they are too young and inexperienced to finish any higher than 5th in the Valley this year! I know, I know, we haven't finished higher than 4th in the league since Les has been here---but now it's time to step up to 3rd and AHEAD of ISU!!

The key is for us and them to finish in separate areas of the bracket headed into St. Louis so we can both win 2 games and renew the War on 74 in St. Louis for Round 3 :D

So a #2 and #4 would do just fine w/ me.

I really do not care where ISU red finishes as long as it is below us! If we have to play them before the MVC final so be it!
