my great grand papa used to say. watch someone who success, find out what they do, and copy it.

so what is up with uni? they did well under mcdermott and now under jacobesen.what are they doing that we are not?

If others could figure it out, they would probably copy it.
But here are the records for UNI, and there were some "mediocre" years under both McDermott and Jacobson before the reached success.
And neither McDermott or Jacobson has won a postseason game yet.

UNI's record under Jacobson. Before this season, Jake's average finish was 4th place.-
2009-10 22-2, 13-1 in the MVC RPI 14
2008-09 23-11, 14-4 in the MVC- 1st seed, RPI 59- lost 1st round NCAA
2007-08 18-14, 9-9 in the MVC- 6th seed, RPI 131
2006-07 18-13, 9-9 in the MVC- 5th seed, RPI 84

Previous 5 seasons under McDermott, who only once finished above 4th place, and who's average finish was in the lower half of the MVC-
2005-06 23-10, 11-7 in the MVC- 6th seed, RPI 25- lost 1st round NCAA
2004-05 21-11, 11-7 in the MVC- 4th seed, RPI 37- lost 1st round NCAA
2003-04 21-10, 12-6 in the MVC- 2nd seed, RPI 59- lost 1st round NCAA
2002-03 11-17, 7-11 in the MVC- 7th seed, RPI 169
2001-02 14-15, 8-10 in the MVC- 8th seed, RPI 248

and the years before McDermott were also pretty lean-
2000-01 7-24, 3-15 in the MVC- 10th seed, RPI 245
1999-00 14-15, 7-11 in the MVC- 7th seed, RPI 145
1998-99 9-18, 6-12 in the MVC- 8th seed, RPI 170
1997-98 10-17, 4-14 in the MVC- 9th seed, RPI 224

No matter how you spin it, UNI is the SIU of old of the Valley right now, only better. They also don't have the flashiest recruits or the big athletes, they just win. And I'd beg you to listen to the best commentator in all college basketball, Panthers play-by-play man Gary Rima.

Can't stop listening to that cat.

i dont think uni is better than the old siu. like t has stated. they haven't won an ncaa game yet. siu went to two sweet sixteens, won another ncca game and had 6 straight nccaa bids.uni has not done that.

i will say the common denomiator between the two is. defense.

Your correct in that the Siu teams were much better, UNI will lose again in the 1st round if they go up against a team with a big center, I thought they played much better last year on offense because they were a better 3 point shooting team, now they are more defensive oriented and score in the low 60"s or mid 50"s.

More of interest to the casual observer is despite mediocre conference finishes, they had 3 consecutive tournament appearances which creates a lot more exposure for recruits than CTI, CBI, etc. We haven't found a way to win arch madness since 1988. Mcdermott and Jacobsen 8 years= 4 tourney appearances, 0 wins
Les 8 years= 1 tourney appearance, 1 sweet 16.

It's a tough call because the sweet 16 is easily worth a few tourney appearances, but the key to this comparison is consistency. They have followed up appearances multiple times, while we were a one year fluke. Combine that with stubbornness to rely on one system instead of adjusting to personnel and you have what we have..... .500

Just think of how much red would be traveling from Peoria to St. Louis if we were the defending Valley tournament champions with the #1 seed again. That would be quite a scene at the Scottrade Center and the Landing. What if

so would everyone in Peoria be tickled pink if we had the success UNI has had??
UNI is a fine program with fine fans, but not all of them are happy, and I suspect if they had the same fans BU has, they'd have their share of griping as well...
Personally I doubt it severely that Peoria's fans would be satisfied with the success UNI has had...
...we'd be hearing endless strains of why hasn't he won a thing in the post-season, and why does he always flop in the MVC tourney...etc....

Since 2005, UNI has won only 6 more games overall than BU has (104-98 ) while playing far weaker schedules, and they have only won 5 MVC Tourney games to BU's 4,
they have 2 post season appearances to Bradley's 4, ZERO post-season wins to Bradley's 11, zero NCAA wins to Bradley's 2.

I think this is a classic example of grass always appearing greener....

But at this point T, most of our fans are starting to want to settle for even getting 3rd in the conference...

Northern Iowa will already have 2 more MVC championships under Jake in 5 years than we have in 8...

I'd have to believe the grass IS in fact greener on the other side.

I am convinced if we had MVC regular season titles, people would whine for something else...it just goes on and on..

I think everyone in Peoria would be tickled pink if we went to the NCAA's 4 times in 6 years, regardless of how many games we won. The amount of exposure having your name called on Selection Sunday 4 times, and having millions of people see your name in a bracket 4 times can't be quantified.

I personally would rather have the layperson say to me 'Bradley? You guys are in the tournament every year, right?' instead of 'Bradley? Didn't you guys have a nice tournament run a few years ago?' I have yet to have one person say to me 'Bradley? You guys made a run to the CBI Championship a few years ago, right?'. I'd prefer to dance annually and lose than to dance once every 5-10 years. Just a personal preference though.

Most people would. But apparently we are the weird ones for rather having consistent NCAA appearances as opposed to 2 wins in a real tournament in 8 years.

NCAA tourney next season...get it done JL!

You do realize UNI won the MVC tourney last year, right?

Why would anyone complain about "flopping in the MVC tourney" when you are the defending champion?

BU's performance since 2006-07 is certainly not awful, but stuck in neutral.

T, when will the grass get greener here? What has/will change at BU to produce a different outcome than these:

.............. Season ... MVC
2009-10.... 12-12 ... 7-7
2008-09.... 18-14 ... 10-8 .. *Excludes CIT
2007-08.... 17-15 ... 9-9 .. *Excludes CBI
...............47-41 ... 26-24...................

Some say BU 09-10 record is down due to their schedule toughness. Would that also imply the 2006-07 and 2005-06 team records
are inflated due to easy schedules, or, were these teams better than 09-10, since they beat tougher non cons?

2006-07 21-12 10-8 *Excludes NIT

Non Con, 9-3, vs DePaul, SIU Edwardsville, Illinois Chicago, Florida A&M, Rutgers, Illinois,
Tennessee Tech, Michigan State, Wright State, Iowa St, Loyola, Southern Miss, VCU

2005-06 20-10 11-7 *Excludes NCAA

Non Con, 7-2, vs Tennesse Tech, S Mississippi, Deleware State, W Kentucky, Butler,
Bowling Green, Loyola, DePaul, and Chicago St

The schedule toughness argument is bogus too. Yes, we played a tough schedule, but let's look at the losses. Western Carolina has a decent team, but they're a team we shouldn't lose to at home. We lost to Loyola at home. SIU stinks and we lost to them at home. CU can't win away from Qwest. ISU can't win away from Redbird. All we had to do was protect the home court and this season would be shaping up very nicely as an NIT season at the very least. Say we were 4-1 or even 3-2 in those home games instead of 0-5 - How much better does 16-8 or 15-9 look than 12-12? I can't speak for other disgruntled fans, but I personally would have been content with either of those records, and would have believed that the arrow was pointing upward if we had just protected the home court.

Everybody want some more wins?? How about this for a non-conference schedule (That will get you more wins!):

11/11/09 vs. Quincy (Ill.)
11/15/09 at SIU-Edwardsville Edwardsville, Ill.
11/21/09 vs. North Florida
11/23/09 at UIC Chicago, Ill.
Basketball Travelers Classic
11/27/09 vs. Norfolk State
11/28/09 vs. Southeast Missouri State
11/29/09 vs. St. Bonaventure
12/05/09 vs. Central Michigan
12/13/09 vs. Niagara
12/16/09 at Ohio
12/19/09 at Utah
12/22/09 vs. Grambling State
