President Obama's comments on Maryland's Gary Williams

tornado

New member
While filling out his bracket President Obama said this about Maryland head coach Gary Williams...

"While filling out an NCAA tournament bracket for a taped segment on ESPN's
SportsCenter, Obama dissed Williams while making his pick for Sunday's
second-round game between Maryland and Michigan State:

"I like Michigan State here," Obama said as he picked the Spartans to defeat
the Terps and advance to the Sweet 16. "Maryland's got a great player, but
Michigan State's got a great coach
, and I think that makes the difference
."

I've got Michigan state picked to win that game... But there'd be some definite poetic justice in seeing Maryland advance and get beaten by a valley team that Williams so often disrespects.

Didn't see a comment on Williams. Also didn't see it as a knock on Williams by saying Mich St has a great coach. There are only so many great coaches.

the heavy read on the statement and the version everyone else in the media got was a dis on Williams and a strong claim that Izzo is a great coach while Williams IS NOT..
..but then, just maybe today proved the Prez to be right...his team forced 20 turnovers and go to the line a bunch more..but couldn't stop Michigan State

So far today looks like FOUR MORE Big East and ACC teams are going down!!

The Maryland - MSU game was pretty exciting! To say GW is not a pretty good coach, one must be pretty bias. I'm a huge GW/Maryland fan so I myself maybe bias, but a national title speaks volume. BTW I believe Tom Izzo is the best coach in college basketball right now! I'd take him over any other coach. So Obama's comment on this is not a stretch.

Hey - Gary Williams placed himself into this discussion by taking a preemptive strike against the Valley and against Bradley in 2006 when he criticized us and claimed his team was more deserving of an NCAA bid...
of course we made the Sweet Sixteen, while his team flopped at home in the NIT to the 32nd seeded NIT team...and then flopped again today on their way to the Sweet Sixteen...so whether he's a good coach or not, he is clearly the enemy of mid-majors and of the Valley...

Yada yada yada Can't you ever just leave something alone? This was over 4 years ago. You can be worse then my GF bringing things up from the past.;-) GW was just protecting his conference and I hope all coaches and AD's do the same thing for theirs. If you can't get past that and admit he is one of the better coaches in basketball then let's just agree to disagree.

Maryland had a fantastic comeback. I was really hoping the would win today since I really wanted to see UNI kick their butt instead of MSU's.

Regarding Izzo, I think he is one of the top 2-3 coaches in college b-ball. I don't like his arrogance but I think Coach K is probably the best coach.

Speaking of UNI, is it just me, or do others like their chances a lot more since Lucas went down for MSU? I think UNI will make it a tough game, but after beating the #1 overall team, you would think that a team is due for a let down. If Lucas doesn't return for this game, I can easily see UNI upsetting MSU.

There is absolutely NO reason UNI can not beat MSU. They should not be intimidated. I actually think they match up better with MSU than they would have against Maryland.

Maybe not better but different. This will not be a game of who controls the tempo type game, it will come down to who can execute and hit their shots. I'd have to believe there will not be a ton of 2nd shots. I believe UNI will win because they will limit their turnovers and keep MSU off the offensive boards. Should be a good one!

Sorry T, but I don't see how claiming one coach is a great coach is a slam at the other coach. Personally I haven't read anywhere where a writer took his statement the way you did.

If we assume he is pointing out that one coach isn't a good coach, then don't we also have to assume that by the same logic, he thinks the other team is full of less than good players?

I just assumed this was just harmless fun post initially, It can't honestly be a serious post about coach bashing.

Ironic! Yesterday Obama agreed to sign an executive order, forcing five "turnovers" which gave his team the win. But ... I still don't consider him a great coach.

Give him time and he will rescind that order and your right he might be one of the worse ever-is really from IL-Oh I forgot we are home of corrupt politicians-I mean coaches

What makes a "good coach"?

I hear people say all the time that Bobby Knight is a good coach because he graduates his players
....but Gary Williams virtually never graduates his players

I hear people say that just because you win championships, get to the Sweet Sixteen or the Final Four, or have 20-win seasons - that alone doesn't always mean you're a good coach - as people seem to discount BU's Sweet Sixteen and give the credit to the assistants, and some say Calipari lands kids who are pros, which has been proven out by two vacated Final Fours and John Wall taking payment but still getting a pass from NCAA.
...btw-- Gary Williams has a stable full of 4-Star and 5-Star players and cannot get to the Sweet Sixteen..

I hear people say Tom Izzo is a great coach or Dean Smith is a great coach...etc...but isn't that the prerogative of the one who forms the opinion.
Thus I am not alone in putting Tom Izzo into a different level of "great coach" than I would put Gary Williams...
and anyway, the issue was more about how he lobbed a preemptive slam against the mid-majors back in 2006 and directly attacked and insulted the Valley and Bradley.
Then he lied and said he'd play any Valley team any time, but when Missouri State's Barry Hinson and every other Valley coach called countless time to take him up on his word -- he stiffed Barry and treated him like a piece of dirt.
This is the behavior that more strikes me as to whether he is a good anything...and unfortunately, I believe he is NOT a good, honorable, or pleasant person, nor coach.

"Gary Williams talks tough. Soon, we'll find out if he is tough.
Williams, Maryland's wonderful if occasionally condescending coach, suggested to the Washington Post on Sunday that teams from the Missouri Valley Conference -- whose hopes for a record five NCAA Tournament bids would come at the expense of larger leagues -- have been ducking schools like Maryland.
"They haven't been banging down anyone's door in the ACC to play," Williams told the Post. "The phone works both ways, last time I checked."
Yes, it does. And sources in the Valley tell me that by the end of this week, Williams will have received calls -- and offers to play a home-and-home series beginning next season -- from every team in the Missouri Valley.
Don't you love that?
Missouri State coach Barry Hinson was so excited by Williams' apparent offer that he had his scheduling director call the Maryland basketball offices first thing Monday morning to schedule a home-and-home series with the Terps beginning next season. And Missouri State is willing to play the first game on the road, even if that means bailing out on a money-making home game already on the schedule for next season.
By 3 p.m., when Maryland hadn't returned the call, Hinson called Maryland himself and left the same message. As of this morning, Williams hadn't returned Hinson's call. He also hasn't yet returned a message left this morning by CBS SportsLine.com to discuss the issue further.
....... if he's going to talk tough when the Washington Post calls, he better be prepared to back it up when Missouri State and Northern Iowa call."

All this still doesn't mean that by saying one is a great coach it means another coach is not. I could care less about Williams or what he says about mid-majors, so I'm not defending him one way or the other.
