Brawl at Mississippi State

Renardo Sidney and teammate Elgin Bailey were in street clothes watching another game, and started fighting.

Renardo Sidney has a long and convoluted history. At one time, he was the #1 rated player in the country in his class, and was a McDonal's All American. He changed high schools in the 9th grade, and moved to Los Angeles with his family after committing to USC and Coach Tim Floyd.
His family was living in an expensive house, well beyond their means, and eventually, the NCAA investigated and found there were illegal benefits coming from USC. Tim Floyd was fired/resigned, and Sidney decided to go to Mississippi State. He sat out all of 2009-2010 as the NCAA carried on its investigation, then was suspended by the NCAA for the first 9 games of this season as a penalty receiving over $11,800 in illegal benefits.
Here is a detailed story from 2008 about Sidney-

Curious how neither was arrested. I guess you can just start swinging in a public area and no harm no foul.

Regardless, both need to be kicked off the team... I know it wont happen. Probably a one or two game suspension and nothing more since Im sure it is deemed a personal or team issue, even though they threw down in a very public manner.

Then again maybe the NCAA will get involved and send both a 3 game suspension for the begining of the 2011-2012 season.

Pretty immature behavior but I have complete confidence they both see the floor for SEC action.

If I'm an MSU alumni I'm making my feelings known to the University President, AD, and coach that I do not want these guys representing my university ever again.

SEC should suspend these thugs for the remainder of the season if Miss. St. does not give them the boot, this stuff continues to happen only because the penalties are never tough enough, time to start giving more severe penalties so these things quit happening.

Technically, I think Bailey should be given a light suspension but Sidney needs to be booted from the team. This is Bailey's first incident with the team and he is likely provoked into a fight the 2nd game Sidney is back after being suspended for a couple years. The video mentions that Sidney had a similar smaller incident in practice a little before this. He's just trouble plain and simple.

It looks like it might be just the opposite. There is a report leaking out that Elgin Bailey will be the scapegoat in this fight, and will be dismissed from the team, and Renardo Sidney, who is the more valuable player, will be reinstated.

no surprise, since coach Rick Stansbury's job is on the line. He is expected to win and get to the NCAA this season, and that will probably dictate how he will handle this incident.

BTW -- without their two players, Mississippi State lost to Hawaii...
but....remember, Bailey is just a backup averaging 5 ppg, and Sidney only became eligible 2 games ago, so this loss is still quite surprising...

Before Renardo Sidney was eligible, Mississippi State was 7-2 ...
Since Sidney became eligible, they are 1-3.
And, as is true for a lot of BCS schools, they really haven't even played a road game yet.
I suppose the loss to Hawaii could be considered a road game, but it's actually part of the "Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic"

Sidney is a cancer and will hurt them...once they start playing a tough home and road schedule in the SEC they are going to self-destruct IMO.

Is Stansbury gone after this year? He's been to several NCAA Tournaments, including advancing to the 2nd round once. But it's been since 2008 now, and especially if Ole Miss wins the division he could be out.

This is funny --in Stansbury's prepared press release Monday -- he brags on how strong his discipline is!
"it’s time to move on and learn from these mistakes...
...by sending Sid and Elgin home following the incident, a strong message was sent that this type of behavior is unacceptable.”
"..the disciplinary action that was taken sends a strong message to these young men, and all of our student-athletes, that inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.”

He might have thought briefly of suspended Sidney longer, except in the two games Renardo Sidney sat out -- Mississippi State was HORRIBLE...
they first had an 11 pt loss to low-major Hawaii, then an embarrassing 22 point loss to St. Mary's..
So - it's obvious they need help!!
....all of their wins this season so far are over really low-mid-majors!

btw-- for the rumor file...
there's several discussions by Mississippi State fans on their boards...of how Renardo Sydney kinda has MSU & coach Stansbury by the you-know-what..
First -- he's talented and he's now finally eligible so of course the coach absolutely needs him...
.....But -- Just about everyone knows Sydney has been on the take and got freebies during the recruiting process...
so if he ever gets booted from Mississippi State and decides to blab to the NCAA then bolt to the NBA-- like I said,
everyone knows that Sydney could easily "bring the whole program down" with what he could say
...so the coach sure doesn't want to get Sydney upset!!

But if you think I am being a little harsh on Stansbury or Sydney -- then read ESPN's Pat Forde...he really states it bluntly..
"The coach of the Bulldogs has turned this season into a mockery in an effort
to mollycoddle his 6-foot-10 prep All-American."
"(Stansbury) .. who already has a poor reputation among his SEC peers is coaching like a desperate man."
"He gerrymandered the Mississippi State schedule, jamming in December games in order to get Sidney and junior guard Dee Bost (eligible) .. The result was an absolute joke: five games in five days in mid-December ..State took five losses in that silly stretch."

"(Mississippi State's football coach) ..Dan Mullen just took 100 football players to Jacksonville for Mississippi State’s bowl game without incident and played brilliantly against Michigan. But Rick Stansbury’s 15 basketball players couldn’t get through a trip to Hawaii without three suspensions and player-on-player violence in a public setting."

More chaos at Mississippi State....players are BANNED from tweeting...

after one player -- their top scorer - griped about playing time and ball hogging by teammate(s) ...taking a slam at the coach with his twitter...
"starting to see why people Transfer you can play the minutes but not getting your
talents shown because u watching someone else wit the ball the whole game"

Honestly -- you could have seen this coming when the coach protected Sydney after that fistfight and the kids who follow all the team rules put up with this stuff...

It was also mentioned that this player and Sydney also were critical of the MSU fans. My brother-in-law is a MSU grad and is just absolutely embarassed by this "joke of a basketball program".

Stansbury has always recruited well but tends to land selfish players and they can't get along...much of this current issue centers on the selfishness of PG Dee Bost..

Do any good BU Fans remember how good Mississippi State was when BU played them in the 2007 NIT...and all those great players were underclassmen -- freshmen and sophomores -- and MSU looked like they were going to be a Final Four caliber team within a year or two with all those great players?
BUT -- almost all of them left & transferred.....and now we know why...

Of that group from 2007...
Richard & Reginald Delk -- Reginald went to Louisville, Richard went to Troy
Jamont Gordon left after his junior year
Ben Hansbrough left immediately after that NIT in 2007 - after his freshman year
Varnado was about the only one who stayed

Brawling Renardo Sidney who got off easy when he's fighting teammates...
is now getting special treatment again...

His Mississippi State team is preparing for a European trip but Sidney doesn't want to go because he knows he might not play....since he's ignored the coach's orders to get in shape..
Rumored his weight ballooned to 320 lbs...and so he will stay and go into weight rehab and training in Houston instead of accompanying his teammates to Europe - where he might be playing in a couple years.
