Look at what butler and vcu are doing right now. They went with young guys that didnt have much experience and they are what we want. Why not take the hand that is feeding illinois with talent and bring it here. We may not get the big time guy but we may get the guys jim couldnt get. WINNING WILL CHANGE PEOPLE NOT WHY WE DIDNT BUY IN!!!!!!!!!!! PASSION for the game and wanting to win takes you a long way.

You are on a little bit of a Jerrance Howard-high right now.
I would see JH as a 2nd tier choice- he has never coached a team before, and has only been an assistant for 4 seasons, doing almost exclusively recruiting and contacts. I think he'll be a good coach someday, but there is no assurance he will be a winner right away.

Nice logical coach da coach..
everyone is going to be risky..

plusses and minuses of everyone...I just hope we don't have an Oh my goodness pick...

I don't think we will..but who knows..

I like lots of guys...scared by some, bored by others....

young guys with no street credit are doing it right now thats what i am saying. This is a start cant be worse then 10th place in the valley. If your guys have to buy in then we arent pushing them or finding the fire inside and thats what these young guys have and the players love it.

I wonder if its safe to assume that with Texas, Purdue, and the Illini all going home that there will be at least one interview in the next couple of days?

Im sure this post is going to do wonders for your goals...

"young guys with no street credit..."

sheesh

Fans and the administration would probably not be comfortable with him learning on the job, which could result in a quick firing. I'm pretty neutral on Howard.

While I agree that this is the time to start, since we finished in last place...just because VCU and Butler did something doesn't mean Bradley should hop on the young guy bandwagon just because its trendy.

I'm looking for BU to take less of a risk on a more experienced asst. coach or head coach looking to move up in the MBB coaching ranks.

Jerrance does have somes strong in-state connections...
but those who say Coach Les never had any recruiting connecitons obviously do not see the obvious...
I'm not saying he always got the blue chippers, but he did have some recruiting ties that he never gets credit for and some of those ties landed great players at Bu that we all enjoyed watching....

SOME of Bradley's best all time players came to Bradley BECAUSE of Jim Les' connections that were already in existence even before he was hired....contrary to those who say he came to BU with NO connections.
Recall that Mo had virtually NO connections to either Chicago area or Central IL, and had to beat the path all over to land players from Ohio & Louisiana..
Jim immediately landed more local kids than his last 3 or 4 predecessors combined..

BTW -- it's not as if top recruits are always beating the door down -- no, it's hard recruiting to Peoria as the next guy will find out...

-surely everyone knows that Jim's close ties to Chuck Buescher led to some of BU's very best players ever choosing Bradley -- Cellus, Ruffin, and even Dyricus and JC...
-Jim had lots of ties to the Catholic schools via his own history as well as his brother Tom Les' ties and Carl Maniscalco's ..several early recruits came this route as did Sammy and to a remote extent - even AW
-Jim had NBA connections both personally & through people like Dick Versace and even Kevin Eastman....several recruits can be attributed to those connections..
-Jim had close ties that landed juco kids like Boogie & Zach -- who were instrumental in getting to the Sweet Sixteen
-Jim had ties to the jucos and Texas kids through Al Brooks...
-JL even had some ties that got him at least some acquaintances in and around Chicago...where we got walt, and of course Sammy..
where schools like SIU have to hire the Chicago AAU people to funnel money their way (Irvin) and then all they get is the program cancers like Hare & Dillard...at least BU has done it the right way and gets good kids..tell me how many decent Chicago kids we've had since Hersey Hawkins & Anthony Manuel....and I'd even be reluctant to count Naperville...

I agree DC. IMO, Jerrance should get an interview, but I look at him as a lower second tier choice who needs some more time on the Illini bench.

Tornado.

Mo had lots of connections in Chicago. Unfortunately he clearly got branded as not being able to coach offense.

JL had connections too, but I think got branded as well. ( I fully admit I had more ties into the recruiting situation under Mo)

The result was, both had to leave the Midwest too much at the end.

as will the next guy -- unless they hire Tai Streets or one of the other insider Chitown AAU guys, we still aren't likely to get a lot of Chicago kids...

In fact the Butler and VCU coaches had plentyof experience...The Butler coach grew up within the organization at Butler and was with them for several years prior to getting the coaching job. There is zero comparison between the Butler and VCU coaches experience level and JH. It seems to me that you are setting JH up to fail. There is zero chance that BU will hire JH and....they shouldn't. When he finally has a few years of on-court coaching experience he may be ready for a low-major coaching job. He is no where near ready now...Bradley is not going to win with an in-experienced coach like JH.

I think Stevens and Howard are very comparable at time of hire. Stevens worked under Matta and Lickliter for a few years and Howard has worked under weber and Gillespie for a few years. Neither had any HC experience. One could argue time spent at U of I and UK is better than Butler too (though I wouldn't). Howard was also a D-1 bball player and had connections from his playing days with AAU coaches and such, that can't be said for Stevens.

Alot easier to recruit to Illinois than Bradley, just sayin.....

VCU's head man Shaka Smart has been around the block before. Stints at California University of Pennsylvania(Grad assistant 2000-2001), Dayton(DBO 2001-2003), Akron(2003-2006), Clemson(2006-2008 ), Florida(2008-2009), and now VCU since the 2009 season.

Brad Stevens at Butler has been around the Butler program in some capacity since 2000. So thats 11 years. He was a volunteer for a bit then became DBO before becoming an assistant under Matta then under Lickliter as well, before taking the head job.

Jerrance Howard has only been around the coaching ranks since 2005. First serving as administrative assistant at Texas A&M from 2005-2007, basketball operations at Kentucky in 2007, then AC at Illinois from 2008-present.

Jerrance will get a HC job, but I dont think he is quite ready yet.

Why do people think BU needs to recruit the CPL?

There is plenty of talent to be had without having to deal with the schemers and hustlers in Chicago.

Who wouldn't like more kids like AW? Indianapolis is a 3.5 hour drive away and there is more than enough talent in that city, without the player running that goes on in Chicago.

When was the last time BU reached into Missouri? Phil Gilbert (East STL)?

I'm not saying to ignore Chicago, but who needs the aggravation of a player who would clearly bring baggage during the recruiting process?

Tyler -- every school in the nation sends recruiters to Chicago --
schools like UCLA and Duke land top Chicago kids...so we need to at least have some connection there...

VCU's head man Shaka Smart has been around the block before....
..not that I would think BU has him in their sights, and not that he'd consider coming to BU -- but Shaka Smart already has his ticket punched to just about any open BCS-level job that he would want - --- he will take him time and pick from the offers.......
