Matt Roth

In a premium interview -- if you read between the lines -- it looks like Matt Roth might head elsewhere -- soon....

"Yesterday after the game we got a little more detail from Matt Roth about his future. He's doing something fairly unique,
graduating in just three years and that opens up some possibilities for him. One of those might be an opportunity to move on
to another school if that fits his academic path
.... The NCAA does allow players to avoid the need to sit out a season after a transfer if the move is to a school that offers an
academic program not available at his current university.

Here's what the Illinois native had to say...

Roth: Yeah, I earn my diploma this April/May... I'll get my degree and I am in process of applying to grad schools ..."

I will have more, including what programs he's interested in ...elsewhere....

Really disappointing basketball career at IU for Matt, obviously. Kudos to him for graduating early and using that scholarship.

Any indications on possible grad schools?

Absolutely. Matt chased a dream. He would have looked great at BU. I think he really could have put up some points. The best thing he did was get his education from a great school.

Congrats to him.

Yeah, I still say he's the best pure shooter with the deepest range I've seen in this area. At BU he would have had more opportunities to fire from long range against less physical defense. And so it goes...

yes, and I will have more later -- there are over 100 schools in the US that have graduate programs in Matt's current major -- and one of them IS Indiana...
so if he wants to meet the criteria in order to transfer without penalty -- he'd have to pursue a graduate curriculum that IU does NOT offer...and he does speculate on that ina this premium interview...as I said I will have more.....I just have work to do this morning to put food on the table for the kids....one of whom has already exhausted her college tuition fund with her appetite ;);) ;)

What was his major?

He was a great player in high school, could have played a lot more minutes in college had he made a different choice in schools , will be interesting to see where he lands next season, congrats to him for graduating in 3 years.

I never understood all the hype surrounding him as a prep player. He was/is just the basketball equivalent of a DH. That's not a bad thing if you can actually get him into the games and have him knock down open threes on a consistent basis (i.e. Sean Harrington), but that just didn't happen at Indiana. If he's not hitting three pointers, there's not much he can do to help his team win.

I remember watching him play a game at the Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament where he scored 15 points while going 5 for 18 from the floor. Every shot was from beyond the three point line and he didn't create any scoring opportunities for himself or his teammates.

DSE scored 15 points, but did so many things to help Washington win that game. I'm so happy that he's the player who ended up coming to Bradley.

Does Bradley have any graduate programs that most big state school don't offer? From just glancing at the BU website, there's only 36 graduate programs. It looks like Indiana University has just about every specific graduate program under the sun like Near Eastern Languages & Culture, Leisure Behavior or Museum Studies.

I'm happy we got DSE too. But I also remember Roth putting up 30+ points or some high number in the Supersectional in Normal as a freshman. He has insane range.

He could have done very well at BU.

I think Roth could be a very good role player/3 point specialist with a good point guard at the MVC level. A lot of things would need to happen, but I would love to see him in a BU uniform to close out his career.

if MR wants to play more (and he has TWO full years remaining of athletic eligibility since he redshirted one of the 3 seasons he's been at IU)
he had better not pick a Big Ten or Big 12 school for grad studies....please Matt -- check the programs BU has to offer..

I read your blog tornado and it says that Matt Roth wants to get a major in Sports Administration. IU has a major in Sports Management (which is essentially the same thing). So, it doesn't sound like he has expressed interested in a graduate program at this time that IU does not offer.

yes --- and no -- so what you say is not quite what Matt hints......he wants a Masters in Sports Administration -- maybe he wants Dr. Glasser's job?? (LOL)
Matt said he already has a major in sports communication and broadcasting ..
and that's what his undergrad degree will be in......

He started in Business Administration so he probably has all the necessaries to get his masters in Sports Administration except a few grad courses...

He then said
".. and I think I want to go with a sports administration masters program"
but Indiana does have that so why even bring up the issue of applying to grad schools or transferring???

So he'd have to find something that varies slightly or he does not fit the NCAA's criteria of needing a graduate curriculum his current school does not offer...
so time will tell.............either way -- I doubt NCAA would hamper the transfer of an A-student who is not a stud ball player
..anyway I linked to a blog but it doesn't say it is mine...

Any updates on Matt Roth? Is he still planning on graduating and playing somewhere else next year? He would have 2 years of eligibility, correct? BU sure could use a shooter... :D

the prevailing opinion at IU seems to be that he will stay at IU and do grad school there...but many think he is the guy whose scholarship will be Creaned since Indiana is way oversigned and still recruiting for more kids as we speak...

Interesting. Well like I said we could always use a shooter, but who knows how many scholies we'll be af'Ford'ed during the spring. ;)

In case Roth gets 'Creaned' :D I would hope we could give him a look.
