The spring National Letter of Intent signing period starts Wednesday morning and extends all the way through Midnight May 18.

We will begin to see a flurry of activity with players verbaling to get the available scholarships, and then the inevitable transfers will crop up when kids find their scholarship has just been given to someone else...

Just this morning Stan Simpson -- who couldn't even find a bit of playing time at Illinois verbaled to Memphis...
Cuonzo just nabbed a kid Iowa was expecting to land...Wes Washpun - a kid many thought was a mid-major-level prospect
Baylor landed a highly ranked juco guard
Canadian big man Braeden Anderson, formerly committed to DePaul, picks Kansas
Kentucky Mr. Basketball Anthony Hickey has a few more offers...and is now looking at Butler
Two kids from Chicago Brooks commit to new coach Mark Montgomery at NIU
Another juco guard Sam Grooms from Chipola just verballed to Oklahoma

Stacy Wilson, a juco sg, verballed to Murray State last night. He was set to visit Illinois State next weekend.

Former Bradley recruit Tyler Brown of Marshalltown CC, is said to close to making a decision and is considering Wichita State and ISU-

Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College guard Tyler Brown, a second-team All-American, is considering WSU and Illinois State and may look at other options.

Here is more info on Tyler Brown from another thread-

Brown left ISU with an offer but no verbal.

Still set to visit WSU in 2 weeks.

I guess it depends on what the guy is looking for: more playing time or a better team.

ISU also said to after Chris Olivier (prep school) and James Farr (Evanston).

The Birds have no seniors next season. As of right now we have 1 scholarship opening for the next 2 years. Intersting because ISU's assistant's son will likely blow up this summer; played very well in Virginia this weekend and got some pub from rivals.

ISU also said to after Chris Olivier (prep school) and James Farr (Evanston)...

Bradley looked closely at Chris Olivier (Seton Prep, South Holland, IL) in high school, and despite the desperate need for a big man after Mike Ochereobia fell through, they did not think he was a D1 player and chose not to offer him.
He was described as a thin athletic kid who had a very limited offensive game, similar to Isiah Martin who just ended his career at Indiana State.

James Farr is a 6'8"-6'9" kid with a stronger body, but he is still a bit of a project. Bradley followed him, too. He has had interest from some bigger name schools like Xavier and Indiana, but the only offers I can find he has are from UIC and Ball State. That, combined with the fact he mentions going to prep school as an option suggest academics may be an issue.

Hope to hear news that our new coaching staff is able to land some top notch recruits in the next several days as I believe we will have 2 open scholarships to be filled, I do not know whose they will be but it happens every season.

Olivier's game really took off at prep school. This season he averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks against other prep schools and jucos.

It looks like ISU is either going after a juco guard or a freshman big.

That site might have his name spelled incorrectly- Oliveria.
Every other site shows it spelled as Olivier.
They also list his weight as 240 lbs- he must have put some weight on.-

Thus far the news on signings has been very slow ..

SIU announces the signing of one recruit, Josh Swan...

the only really big name is 4-Star Michael Chandler of Indianapolis has signed with Central Florida (UCF)
..none of the 2012 commits are allowed to sign now - they will wait 'til this fall...

there's reasons for this...

first -- almost every 2011 kid in the Top 150 has already committed so that since this kid was still out there means there's a reason...and the main articles on him say what that reason is...

2nd -- the mere fact that Alcorn State would offer a kid who is also getting BCS offers - would surely mean they have found a way to get the kid in with poor academics...
Alcorn can afford to tie up a ride all summer waiting on the kid to try some summer courses and extra attempts at the ACT - but bigger schools want to land someone and not be disappointed if the kid fails at the end of summer.
Here are some comments from the premium articles...
"Luckett still has to clear academically"
"likely to end up at a junior college"
"he doesn't have the core courses to qualify"

-the fact that even Rick Stansbury at Mississippi State wanted this guy yet gave up says volumes that his academics are poor

BTW -- Illinois gets Devin Langford's LOI
..and although Sammy cannot sign an official LOI -- he did sign a binding financial aid agreement to accept a scholarship for next year so that makes Sammy officially an Illini and Bruce Weber can now comment on his...
BW has some pretty nice things to say about Sammy!!!
http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/041311aaa.html

...mentions Sammy's leadership and can bench press >> 300!!!

actually -- that was just a joke -- Sammy was known to have benched 300 while here at BU and we've had some threads about it...
but since you never believe me unless I give links then here they are, but then someone always gripes about the links...you watch...

In the press conference Bruce Weber mentioned it and these Illini guys make reference to it..
-St. Louis Dispatch writer reports Bruce said it - http://twitter.com/#!/studurando/status/58246138549125120

Here's one more Sammy quote worth mentioning...
