RPI Weekend for MVC

Dallas Brave

New member
Saturday and Sunday are important days for the MVC s the league works to get its pre-conference RPI established by winning some big games as well as the attention of the national hoops pundits in games against the BSC conferences.

Teams from the MVC have already played Wisconsin, Arkansas, Minnesota, and Rutgers during the Thanksgiving holiday. Remaining games to played today and tomorrow include: George Mason, LSU, St. Johns, Oklahoma State, Illinois, Tulane, and Virgina Tech.

Missouri Valley (4)
Projected champ: Wichita State
At-large: Creighton, Southern Illinois, Missouri State
Bubble: Bradley, Northern Iowa
The Valley wasn't a fluke. It will have another Sweet 16 representative this season.

The Rpi gurus still haven't updated to show BU at 5-0, but Ken Pomeroy's rankings have both Missouri State and Bradley ranked in the Top 40.
CU is rated #4 and nine of the MVC teams (only Drake) are at 115 and higher.

Maybe those gurus show Bradley at 4-0 because games against Non-DI's don't count toward one's RPI.

Jerry Palm at collegerpi.com has these values for MVC teams:

Wichita St 4
Mo St 17
Indy St 53
SIU 102
ISU 127
UNI 175
Bradley 201
E'Ville 231
Drake 249
Creighton 280

It is still too early to be looking at the RPI, IMO.

George Mason, LSU, and Tulane all fall victim to the Valley. Oklahoma State narrowly escapes in OT.

Yet to be played today: Illinois and St. Johns

The latest Realtimerpi.com shows the Valley now in sixth place, ahead of the SEC and the Big East!

I find it a little perplexing that Bradley's RPI drops to 204, despite playing Illinois tonight! Oh well. I guess we'll have to boost our RPI playing some of the Valley power teams later this season! :D

Strong showing by the Valley so far over the holiday. It canbe topped off by a SIU win over Va Tech today.

WSU and MSU did the Valley proud knocking off #6 LSU and #7 Wisconsin

After just one day, here is how the values changed.

For starters the MVC moved from 9th to 6th as a conference.

Wichita St 4
Mo St 30
Indy St 44
SIU 53
ISU 97
UNI 183
Bradley 186
Creighton 189
Drake 197
E'Ville 232

Here is something interesting on JPalm's site this year... a conference's record against BCS conferences.

The BCS:

ACC 7-4
B12 5-3
BE 7-6
B10 5-7
PAC10 4-2
SEC 3-9

The next 4 dubbed by the Packer's/Digger's:

A10 2-7
CUSA 2-7
MtnW 6-4
WAC 2-6

The Top Mid-Majors:

Col 1-8
Hor 4-8
MAC 3-11
MVC 6-8
WCC 2-7

I know it is early - but it is nice to see the MVC out to a good start.

Conf RPI Standings for games played thru Sunday night (11/26):

1) B12
2) PAC10
3) ACC
4) Mtn West
5) B10
6) MVC
7) BE
8] SEC
9) CUSA
10) A10
11) WAC
12) WCC
...
16) MAC
17) Colonial
...
20) Horizon

We need to beat a couple good teams soon to move up. Wow, 186... that hurts! I guess taking apart crappy teams does not impress the computer! If we would have beaten Illinois I wonder where we would be?

We'd be better...but not as much as you might think. Illinois' non-conference schedule is worse than our thus far. Also, you can't blame BU for their low RPI at this point - heading into the season DePaul was supposed to be an RPI booster, not the RPI killer they've turned out to be. Rutgers is going to end up being an RPI killer too! I think the MVC may have to rethink their strategy when it comes to the Big Least...they're just hurting our RPI! :)
