Attendance Woes

It was mentioned in another thread, but the attendance at Missouri is a topic that is just now being discussed, although it's almost as if nobody wants to talk about it.

Missouri has a new head coach, and they are off to a 7-0 start under the new regime, all of the games so far HOME GAMES.
They are in the Top 40 in RPI because of all those wins, despite the creampuff nature of the opponents.

But in Monday's game they drew only 1,234 fans.
Pictures of the game on the Mizzou website show the virtually empty arena.

In their 7 home games, the average attendance is 5,200, but that was buoyed by a special promotion on Saturday (11/25) where right after their sellout home football game against archrival Kansas, they let everyone into the basketball arena for the game immediately following the FB game using the same ticket.
They still only drew 7,000+ for that one, meaning the games without the special promotions have averaged only about 4,000.

What's going on?
This is a brand new 25,000 seat arena?
The team is 7-0 and averaging 84 ppg.
Maybe the selection of nonconference opponents (NC A&T, Army, Stetson, Lipscomb, Davidson, Stephen F. Austin, Coppin St.) doesn't exactly thill the populace?
Maybe some holdover from all the turmoil the past few years?

I think this is the biggest factor. Towards the end of his tenure in Mizzou, Synder wasn't thought of very highly and it seemed like some people gave up or lost interest. But I remember when they would be on Big Monday and have huge crowds and the place would be rockin. If Anderson continues his early success I'm sure the fan base will come back. It's a shame that besides being dirty that Synder also alienated their fan base, wasn't it at the Braggin Rights game last year where a Mizzou fan dumped popcorn all over h im as he was leaving the court?

1,234 people at the Missouri game last night? Is that some kind of record for powest turnout for a Missouri game or a Big 12 game? That's amazing!

As pointed out, it will take some time to recover from the interest lost during the frustrations of the Snyder Era. However, the media is just now starting to pick up on their 7-0 start and if they can beat Arkansas, there will be a buzz and attendance will go up.

Also, there were some frustrations among the alumni and the controversy over the naming of the arena, and many pledged to withdraw their season tickets.

Some early success with Mike Anderson and the fans will come back quickly.

But I'm sure MSU has drawn some Missou fans away.

I think Mizzoo is 'righting the ship'.

Good for them.

The "8-minute" concept employed at Mizzoo... I need to hear and know more.

For now it is working and sounds great. They washed out a team that SIU lost to in OT on a neutral court. (oh wait - we can never look at the 'who beat who' scenario)

Talk about a team having attendance woes.

This is a story that defies belief.

For years and years the University of New Mexico has been among the nation's leaders in home attendance.
They have a HUGE and beautiful home arena they call the "PIT".
It seats well over 18,000, and since New Mexico basketball is basically the only show in town, they have historically drawn 16,000 and more.

Their best years were just a couple years back, and their peak year was 1998 when they averaged 17,625 at their home games.

But now the home attendance has not only fallen to all time record lows, but there is even something MORE STRIKING.

On Sunday they drew the smallest announced crowd ever (10,856) but it was noted that the arena probably had even way less than half of that number actually in attendance.
Then on Tuesday night, the numbers plummetted even more.
The announced attendance was 10,502, but the place was
so empty that a couple members of the media actually did a precise head count,
and came up with 1,485!

A HOME CROWD of 1,485 for a team that's perennially in the Top 5 among D-I schools in home attendance.

Seriously....a major college basketball program last night drew an actual 1485 fans for a home game in an arena that holds 18,000 and often draws 17,000+.

Can you imagine the local grilling by the press if BU had sunk so low as to be drawing only 8% of the arena's capacity? (880 people would the equivalent of 8% occupied)

Go figure...but the lack of quality play is only part of it.
The ridiculous scheduling is part as well (Charleston Southern, Longwood, NC A&T, etc.)

As a little humor, here is a picture of the crowd at the game:
