Matt Roth a Must

wily coyote

Just got back from Peo.CC and was able to take in Matt and Anthony Thompson. AT is gonna be a great get for BU. He was very agile and ran the floor well. Had a decent game but was out matched by his 7'0" opponet who is going to Iowa. Still farther along than OB was. The mmain reason for this topic is Matt Roth. He is an absolute must get for BU. What a performance he put on this a.m. His range is from just inside the doors. Looks about 6'3" decent speed, good ballhandler ,works good without the ball> Best shooter I've seen as a Jr. in my 50 plus yrs. around these parts anyway. He is a must for BU. One more thing, he was worth the whole admission price just by himself. After the BU game they are playing downtown againsomewhere around 9 to 9:30 Go down and watch him. YOu won't believe him. Go BU crush the O & B.
Once a Brave always a brave.

Matt Roth and Washington played Metamora last night in the opening game of Mid-Illini Conference action.

Matt dropped in 29 points, including 8 3pt baskets. Jim Mattson showed highlights of the game, which included a bomb from several feet outside the 3pt line. :D

Washington took 56 shots for the game, and 40 of them were from 3pt range! :-o

MR seems to routinely drop one of these 30 footers, even in games that are already in the win column, just as sort of a "calling card" or signature move.
But if he can do it, then it is probably good to occasionally take those shots so he gets some practice at it.
Never know when it'll come in handy.

I heard just a couple minutes of coach Les' radio show last night. A caller mentioned that he saw Les at the Washington game the other night and asked him about it. Of course Jim couldn't make any comments (per NCAA rules) about MR but Dave Snell chimed in and made some generic comments about how "this young man (he made sure to not mention any names) is a fine player and is being heavily recruited. I hope BU has the inside track on this kid with him being in our own back yard. He could fill JC's spot when Jeremy graduates as BU's next great shooter.

Matt Roth hits 12- 3's last night for the WHS record........with PM in the stands.............now that would make me sick if MR ended up @ isu?

They don't need Matt Roth, they have Brandon Holtz, and they would play him and Osiris well ahead of Matt.
They just want to keep Matt from going to Bradley.

Tornado, in your dreams, they would play Holtz & osiris ahead of Matt. Roth is better than both of them right now. He is a must for BU.They need to pull out all stops to get him on the hilltop. Once a brave always a brave.

It was a joke, wily!
But it was meant to point out how they overstock on a routine basis with 2-guards and many are unhappy, sitting the bench, and leaving before their eligibility expires.

PM would have Matt Roth redshirt as a frosh.
He tried to get Bobby Hill to RS.

By the way, congrats to Washington's Maggie Krick for being voted the Newcomer of the Week in the MVC!!

I don't think that's necessarily true. Hill is making the transition from a mostly inside/outside player to an outside/inside player in the Valley. Comparing the two isn't wise. Besides, shooters shoot and the transition is easier for them than most people. I haven't seen Roth play, but I would guess defense would be the toughest adjustment for him as both Les and Moser demand good defense to earn playing time.

As far as the Redbirds overstocking their guards, maybe you outta look at BU's roster. How much with Roth play with Fears, Maniscalco, Warren, Ray Brown, Williams all way ahead of Roth before he ever steps foot on the Hilltop? I am not sure, but outside of Maniscalco, aren't the rest of those guys SG's?? Please don't flame because I'm asking, I'm not certain on the BU roster.

In '08, the Redbirds will have only Holtz and Eldridge as SG's and that's it. Bobby Hill is a 3

FWIW-Roth has been to at least 2 Redbird games this season. I saw him at 1 game and was told he was at another. I don't know what that means, but I know Coach Moser is recruiting him hard. I know his interest is not to keep him away from BU. He wants him to be a Redbird. He's not pulling a Chris Lowery who started to recruit Eldridge as soon as he verballed to ISU, in an effort to keep him from going there.

Fears is a point guard who also plays the 2, and Williams and Brown are more of a 2/3 type . But Fears, Williams, and Brown, will all be seniors when Roth starts his college career. And Roth is not at all similar to any player BRadley has except Jeremy Crouch.
Roth is being recruited as a replacement for Jeremy, who will be gone by the time Matt would arrive at Bradley (if he comes here). Jeremy as a junior, leads Bradley in minutes played, shots taken & made, 3-pointers taken & made, steals, and points scored. Roth should have no doubts that he would be a key part of Bradley's style and would get a lot of playing time as a freshman, with JC gone.
Jim Les has been recuiting Matt Roth as long as any college coach, and Matt knows that he is a very strongly desired piece of Bradley's future.

Here is a link to the article in the pantagraph about Roth and Washington's win last night. It reports that Jim Les was at his game last Saturday against Canton. It sounds like Roth is not likely to commit soon, and may be hoping for higher offers.

One other thing Roth will consider- will the college coaches recruiting him still be coaching in 2 years? IMO, Jim Les is more likely to still be coaching in 2008 than the other coach who has offered him a scholarship.

He sounds like a good player. Whoever gets him, will be happy, I'm sure.

I'm sure Bradley is the clear leader for his services also. At least that's what I've been reading on this board and other recruiting sites.

I was just disputing some notions of the Redbird program. Holtz would be a senior and Eldridge a junior if Roth were to sign with ISU. Those are the only people who would be 'ahead' of him.

I'm sure it won't matter though. Yes you are right on. On the surface, it would appear Les has greater job security than Moser.

DC-- I am not so sure Bradley is the leader for Roth, and I suspect only MR knows for sure.

I don't know, either.
But the fact that he has been to a couple ISU games suggests they are definitely in consideration. That's why Jim Les continues to work hard to get him. Roth himself has said he doesn't have a leader.

Memo to Matt Roth:

Number of players from Bradley who have gone on to NBA careers: 22 (plus three to the Globetrotters) - more than several ACC and Big Ten schools
Number of players from ISU who have gone on to NBA careers: Three (same as Truman State and half the number Evansville has produced)
and the last one graduated in 1980, so you'd have to ask your grandfather who they were.

Number of players coached by Jim Les who have gone to the NBA: One (plus one to the Globetrotters)
Number of players coached by Porter Moser who have gone to the NBA: Seriously? Of course, none.

Number of Bradley players who have played in the NBA that graduated in the past 25 years: NINE, three are still playing in the NBA, one is still coaching in the NBA, and one more is a top D-I head coach.
Number of ISU players who have played in the NBA that graduated in the past 25 years: ZERO

I'm not sure but my guess is Matt is more concerned with where he is going to go to college than what his NBA chances are right now.

I would also wager that before everything is all said and done, ISU will not be Bradley's main competition for Matt Roth's services.

Do you think Roth is a NBA prospect? I hope this is not the method Les uses to recruit him.

I agree, and I highly doubt that it is. I'm guessing he probably shows him the highlights of the 4 guard offense and Jeremy Crouch's current statistics, since that's the role he'll be playing. If you're a guard, I don't know why you wouldn't want to play in a system like BU currently is running.

Of course, I say the same thing about Bruce Weber's guard-friendly motion offense, yet he can barely get anyone of any quality to go and play in it.
