2020-21 Coaching carousel

UTEP is now in need of a new head coach as their coach Rodney Terry is leaving to take an assistant position at Texas under new head coach Chris Beard.

New Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams is also expected to steal another team's head coach. Portland State head coach Barret Peery is expected to join Adams’ new staff at Texas Tech. So Portland State will now be looking for a new coach.


Also, Texas A&M Corpus Christi is expected to hire Purdue assistant coach Steve Lutz as its next head basketball coach.

Is this a reaction by Arizona at this time to help ward off any punishment they hear may be coming down from the NCAA to them? Timing seems suspect. This investigation has been out there for awhile. Why fire him now?

Good question. The NCAA Notice of Allegations was delivered to Arizona back in October, but the administration there decided to keep it private and not release the findings. Only after ESPN sued the University of Arizona and won did the university make the details of the allegations public.

The allegations were far more damning than even what was expected- 5 Level 1 violations, including the dreaded "Lack of Institutional Control" charge against Sean Miller-

So maybe the administration was hoping they could hide the charges, and wait this out, but when they were forced to make them public, and the general reaction by fans, boosters, and University big shots was negative, they felt compelled to act.
 
Hofstra to hire assistant coach Speedy Claxton as their new head coach. Former head coach Joe Mihalich stepped down and will take an administrative job in the Hofstra athletic department.

It sounds like Jim Molinari isn't going to be out of work for very long. New Boston College head coach Earl Grant is reported to be hiring Jim as an assistant on his staff.

Boston College finished the 2020-21 season dead last in the ACC with a record of 4-16 overall, and 2-11 in the ACC.
 
Arizona is reported to be hiring Gonzaga assistant coach Tommy Lloyd. He has been an assistant to head coach Mark Few for 20 years at GU.
 
Tony Barbee is the frontrunner to be named head coach at Central Michigan-

Barbee has had 2 previous head coaching positions-
UTEP 2006-2010 - overall record 82-52
Auburn 2010-2014 - overall record 49-75

He has been on John Calipari's staff at Kentucky since 2014. If he gets the Central Michigan job, it is likely that Illinois assistant Orlando Antigua will return to Kentucky to fill the assistant spot.
