2024 Transfer Portal news

Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin lands his second portal transfer. Sam Murray II is a 6'9" sophomore forward who didn't play much in either of his 2 seasons at Murray State. He appeared in 20 games in each year, and played 6 minutes per game his freshman season and 8 mpg this past year. He averaged 1.7 ppg and 1.9 rpg as a freshman, and 1.5 ppg and 1.6 rpg as a sophomore. He has 2 seasons of eligibility left.

I have no idea what kind of players these three are. However, I wonder if this is as much as anything- his way of putting the infrastructure in place to have the culture he wants and the system he wants to run. That is hard to do with a totally new entire set of players coming from all over the place. I may be way off but just a hunch.

I don’t have a prediction here either, and on paper I probably wouldn’t be excited either, but it does say something about a leader that 3 players would uproot their lives and follow to a new team.

SIU's first portal transfer Trey Miller is a 6'2" freshman guard from Houston. In his only season at Incarnate Word, he averaged 10.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, and 3.1 apg, and he shot 30.0% from three. He has 3 years of eligibility left.

SIU sophomore guard Trey Miller was planning on transferring after Bryan Mullins was fired, but today he announced he was withdrawing from the portal, and returning to SIU. He played sparingly for SIU last season, and averaged 1.1 ppg and 1.0 apg.

As posted above- UNI gats another portal transfer- Ben Schwieger, 6'7" redshirt sophomore at Loyola. He averaged 9.2 ppg as a freshman at Loyola, but he dealt with injuries his sophomore year, and only averaged 1.3 ppg. He has 2 years of eligibility left.
He'll get to team up again with former Loyola teammate Jacob Hutson at UNI.

Great Article by Tribune Star on how it may look bleak for Indiana State now after losing entire team, that I S.U. can still succeed by Navigating the transfer portal effectively!!!! A good lesson for all mid major programs. Indiana State proved this by recruiting under valued players and getting to the NIT championship and would have made NCAA tourney if not for all those upsets!!!! People will always love the underdog, which is why the lower level division 1 teams will always be a step away from a big upset in March Madness!

Drake could look like a D-2 team next year and Indiana State could be a complete unknown. Definitely not the top two MVC teams we saw this year. Hard to see who Bradley’s challengers for the top spot will be next year.

Should be reminiscent of the mid- 2000s, both ISUb and Drake in the gutter!

Hard to predict on which teams will be good or bad with all these transfers coming and going the next several weeks. The one thing that I know is our staff has put together a very good roster and they still have 2 more spots left to finish it off. I like this roster a lot. Just need to stay healthy. Hoping everyone comes in early and gets to work this summer.

Valparaiso gets a commitment from 6'8" redshirt-freshman guard from Grand Canyon, Isaiah Shaw. He was born in Rome, Italy while his father Casey was playing professionally there, but played high school ball in Nashville, plus a year of prep school in Phoenix. He is the nephew of Grand Canyon coach and former Valpo star Bryce Drew.
He redshirted his first year, 2021-22, then suffered a knee injury and missed nearly his entire second season in 2022-23.
He played in 32 games for GCU this past season, 2023-24, and averaged 8 minutes per game, 2.6 pp G and 0.9 rpg.

Drew Steffe, a 6'5" G/F who did not play as a freshman at Texas Tech this past year, transfers to SIU.
He was a 4-star recruit and was highly recruited out of high school. He had several high-major offers before committing to Texas Tech in 2023. (see verbalcommits link below). But he left the team in December, 2023 for personal reasons, and never returned.

Indiana State's Ryan Conwell has committed to Xavier - https://twitter.com/TiptonEdits/status/1781388306808234329

So far, none of Indiana State's key players, who many predicted would transfer to St. Louis to play for Josh Schertz, have committed to the Billikens.
2 starters, Robbie Avila and Isaiah Swope are visiting St. Louis today.
Neither appear to have made a commitment yet, although Swope just posted this on Twitter - https://twitter.com/IjSwope/status/1781419962751414432

I wonder if Schertz was banking on bringing at least 2 of his top 5 to SLU to help him jumpstart things there. That could still happen with Avila and Swope but hopefully it doesn't blow up in his face in year 1.

Valparaiso lands another portal transfer- Devon Ellis, a 6'6" sophomore at University of Maryland- Eastern Shore. He is originally from Chicago. He spent a year at a juco, then played 2023-24 at UMES, where he averaged 11.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, and shot 50% overall and 25% from three.

Aaron Gray, a player from Indiana State who entered the portal, has withdrawn and will return to InSU for 2024-25 for his senior year.
Bio- https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/aaron-gray/7652
Stats- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/5107795/aaron-gray..

Indiana State's Aaron Gray is an enigma.
He started at a DII and had an awesome freshman season averaging 15.5ppg, 6.3 rpg and even hitting 36.4% of his 3-pointers (39-107)
Then he transferred up, and as a sophomore at Niagara in 2022-23, had a very good year- 12.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg.
Aaron's cousin Antone was an assistant coach there at Niagara but then was hired away by Schertz to be assistant at Indiana State.
So Aaron transferred "up" again to Indiana State and there was a buzz about how improved he was and how he'd bolster their offense a bunch!
But, he barely played - kinda wasted the entire year on the deep bench averaging 1 ppg. Then when Schertz went to Saint Louis,
Antone Gray went with him sparking speculation that Aaron would also go to SLU. But now he's chosen to stay
at Indiana State & with their roster is virtually empty, maybe he will get some playing time.
